So someone is coming by this week to remove popcorn from the ceiling in our remaining bedrooms in our house. Since I pretty much have to remove everything in my kid’s room and since his room is in pretty bad shape wall-wise, I had this brilliant idea of repainting the entire room with his college colors. So I’ve got Home Depot to mix up a gallon of Cal blue and gold. Now I need some ideas on how to paint the room. Anyone have any pics of college-themed bedrooms or rooms in general? Something easy to paint. It’s a pretty small bedroom, 7x7’ with a window.
In MY book you’ve got the wrong colors!
7x7 ? that’s a closet. in my book. Did a bed even go there?
Home Depot has a brochure with a few ideas…https://www.homedepot.com/hdus/en_US/DTCCOM/HomePage/Commerce/Building_Supplies/Paint_Sealers_Supplies/Docs/2012_Glidden_Team_Colors_Brochure.pdf
The sentiment is so nice…but are you sure such dark colors are a good idea in such a small room? Maybe paint the room white and paint a stripe or two of each color?
Yeah, what if he went to Syracuse (orange) or Williams (purple). Slippery slope.
One of the paint companies has NFL colors and suggestions on painting Man Caves.
Well, I was thinking of making the dominant color the gold, and perhaps making crown molding and/or the floor trim the blue. The room wall is already sort of yellow-ish already.
Horizontal stripes make rooms look wider,
^^Hips too.
Is your kid okay with this? You’d be surprised at how unhappy kids are at changes to their room, especially freshman year. Also, if the inertia at your house matches ours, it might be a long time past his graduation that you will still have this paint job. It isn’t likely to improve your resale value, either.
My two cents: you never know how your kid will feel about his/her college or whether he/she wants to be reminded of the school when home. Cal is a stressful place. I see in my neighborhood that for many kids going there the last thing they want to think about when taking a break at home is school.
You misspelled “terrible.” If skidad had this idea, I would be looking around to see where he hid the magic brownies.
Well the paint is already bought. This area is full of Berkeley or bust parents so I have no worries of selling the house.
I would do three walls of one color and then the accent wall. It’s just paint. If it sucks or your child hates it, it’s easy to paint over.
Rather than painting the trim blue, which risks looking tacky, maybe think in terms of blocks of color. Something like this: http://rsynews.com/103WRX8_5o9r830n/
Or possibly, doing one wall blue and the others gold.
ETA: I love some of the ideas on @checheur 's link. Blocks of color.
@sylvan8798 I think that’s a winner with the alternating walls… I like it! There’s really only 2 walls, one wall is pretty much all closet and another wall is almost all window.
There are some interesting ideas here: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS759US759&biw=1229&bih=582&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=f86NW_6mN6bn5gLWrKHgDg&q=rooms+painted+with+horizontal+stripes&oq=rooms+painted+with+horizontal+stripes&gs_l=img.12…84002.85835…87726…0.0…0.59.427.8…1…1…gws-wiz-img.dkmYEShu3ZM
You could simplify a lot of these ideas. I’ve painted stripes before and it’s not hard.
What happens if he transfers? Or flunks out?
I think I’d go for a neutral wall color…and maybe get bed linens with the school colors or something. Seems like those would be easier to replace…
My kids would not like this…because really they would want to make the choice.
Just get curtain panels in the colors. They can be taken down when you realize this is- IMO- over the top.
My opinion is this is making an awful lot about his going to Cal. Why? We put their college decal in the car window. Anyone who wanted to be impressed could be. The end. I did get D1 an $8 pashmina scarf that happened to be the school color. She liked it for a year, then moved on to other colors she liked.
If you are doing different walls with different colors, it’s critical that you get a sharp line down the corner. I suggest lots of painter’s tape. Also, with colors that dark, it may take several coats to get what you want.
FWIW one of my other rooms is wallpapered (not painted) with Chicago Bear colors and logos so I personally have zero issues with showing alliegances. And as it turns out I have one of those houses that has a lot of brass fixtures in it, so the gold and blue was sort of a natural idea that came out of it. I was really asking more for design ideas, not opinions on my tastes.
