Painting a room with college colors

If it’s only one wall, you can do what I did just before heading to college. Paint the wall blue and then white clouds and golden sun in a nice mural. You will have blue and gold but the white clouds make the room brighter. The entire daily was surprised and pleased it turned out. It was just too dark as a solid blue wall.

It took many years before they finally decided to paint over it to solid white of some shade to go with the rest of the house.

Is this meant to be a surprise for Junior Plum? Or is he enthusiastic?

Just paint it a neutral color and get a few wall stickers, like these.

Lol… You don’t want others opinions on your taste on CC… Ha… ;)… Go Bears!

If it’s only two walls in a small room, go for it. Paint is cheap. But I would not paint trim…that’s time consuming and if you change mind later, it’s a real PIA to re-do trim. I think some of the horizontal stripes from the link in post #15 would work.

Haha @Knowsstuff my wife saw the responses on this thread and now she’s beating me up too. But I sure feel good after the Khalil Mack trade…

^I think if you want to do something like paint a room in some college colors, why not? Things like this tend to look bad if they are poorly executed, as in less than straight lines, paint of one color bleeding over into the other, inadequate coverage, or wall paint unintentionally on the trim. I do agree with @gosmom that painting the trim in either color is probably not a good idea. If it’s white or natural wood, it can work with whatever else you are doing.

Then again, D’s room is hot pink bordello chic, so what do I know?

College related home decor is extremely common and especially popular with guys. I don’t know why some of you all are acting like this is an absurd idea.

Anyway, I agree that dark blue paint can be a pain, so my suggestion would be to limit that color to a stripe or two or to the lower third of the wall to chair rail molding level.

To make it easier to change color schemes in the future, you might want to paint the walls white and use the gold and blue just as accent colors. Save some white paint to cover up the stripes/accents when/if that time comes.

Color coordinated bedding and curtains would be a nice touch. I think he’ll really like it.

Here’s the faux chair rail design - pretty easy.

Just no, in so many ways.

Well, the bottom could be blue and the top solid white or flip flopped. I wasn’t suggesting that color scheme.

This is the same idea, just taken to a more sophisticated level. I’ve had two homes with chair rail molding and contrasting colors on top and bottom, and had many complements. This is a young man’s very small bedroom, so I was suggesting something a little simpler.

Maybe the point is really about bringing girls home. NOT. Sorry, Plum, this is really your family choice.

How handy, they are also the CC colors. :)>-

For stripes or color blocks, I’ll jut say one thing: Frog Tape.

Repainting that blue is going to be tough if little Plum hates it. The previous owners of this house painted all of the wood trim (and there is a lot of it because this is a 200 year old house) in our bathroom and bedroom navy blue. We were told it will take two coats of primer to cover it before we can even begin to paint it a lighter color.

I love the comments about how small the room is! My S’s childhood room is 6X6.

@Massmomm - yes, and then two coats of high end BM paint. How do I know that? I recently repainted our master bedroom that the previous owner painted dark grey. Two coats of the thickest Kilz and two coats of “one coat” BM paint. You might be better off stripping that paint…

D had one wall gumball grape. I made her Kilz it.

While she lived at home, fine. But I’d never assume home seekers will be happy to live with your colors. Or want the repaint tadk.

That grape, btw: if you leaned against it or swiped your hand it left a cloudy streak. May have been the concentration of pigment. (I dont care why. It’s Kilzed and will be painted neutral this fall.)

Have to say that painting rooms school colors was popular where we used to live. I’m pretty sure one of the big selling points of our house was that our basement was crimson and gray (it was really sommelier red and gray and not related to the university but we’ll take it since it meant a quick sale!). My daughter’s childhood bedroom was teal and lime green (awful) but it turns out the new owner’s pre-teen daughters fought over that room.

OP - Do what you want in the room. It’s just paint if someone doesn’t like it down the road.

And post pics when it’s done!

I’ll add my vote to keeping the trim light. The trim that was once gray still could use another coat of white, but I’m done for now.
