Parent Weekend

Being 3,000 miles away, my D, along fortunately with a few of her friends, were “orphans,” and had a nice time but would love to hear details from those of you who made it to the weekend. What were the activities and performances? And what were your impressions of how the kids were doing? I hear nothing but good things from my D but would love any details!

Well, for me, parents weekend started with a call from My D Friday on my way home from work… she asked me to come down and take her out to dinner, then head up to the Purnell Lobby for a cabaret performance from the CMU MT counselors/teaching assistants as their first fundraiser for their NY/LA showcases in the spring. They started out with a group number, then each of the seven students did a little personal piece and were all fantastic.

Saturday morning they had the “class demostrations” in the chosky theater. It lasted from 11:00AM until 12:30PM. Each group had about 15 minutes for their demonstration. First they started out with the actors movement teacher working with all 38 actors doing various movements in very good unison. Then the actors speech teacher had them all write their names in IPA [International Phonetic Alphabet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](International Phonetic Alphabet - Wikipedia) She also had them read several poems in unison, all very good. Then one of the MT jazz teachers had one of the advanced jazz classes put on a demonstration of their class which consisted of various warm up exercises, moves and combinations, all to the beat of a tom-tom drummer, then they demonstrated some swing dancing they’re working on - Whoa! it was fantastic! then also performed a little hip hop routine… all the kids were fantastic.
Next came all 87 MT’s singing Skid Row from LSOH, and then What I did for Love from Chorus line. Fantastic. What a group of singers…
They finished up with a bit from the Boal workshop, several very interesting pieces.

Had a nice barbeque after the demonstrations outside of Purnell center.

Saturday finished up with an all pre-college talent show…

various singing, dancing, acting, and instrumental numbers… all wonderful.

They did “Taylor the Latte boy” from Cheno, but then also a “response” from “Taylor” which was hilarious. [LOVE plus SOUL = PLEASURE - Taylor the Latte Boy’s Response](http://docgorio.multiply.com/video/item/19)

Overall, the kids were all great.

Thanks for the recap! Nice to hear more about it from parental point of view…

My daughter was among the orphans, but she seemed to really enjoy the MT Cabaret, as well as singing with the MT group. And she also went out to dinner with her fellow orphans Saturday night…yes, we’ve been adding to her funds on a very regular basis!! Anyway, I’m glad to contribute to cause of health and happiness :)

Well, I noticed a couple things up on Youtube from Parents weekend… perhaps people will post more there as time goes on… here’s what’s there so far…

Poor Joe’s Mike kept slipping down, until halfway through he couldn’t take it anymore, stopped, fixed the mike, and then continued…
