For any upperclassman parent, do you still attend Parent Weekend? Are there many students “orphaned”, meaning that their parents do not visit them during that weekend?
If you attend Parent Weekend, how long do you stay and what do you do while you are there?

we just went for the first time and S is a Senior! Never went before since we had driven down every year to help him move in and this year he stayed in his off campus apt from last year so we didnt go in August.
We did all the organized activities (its U South Carolina and they had alot of stuff to do, a reception at the President House, a Carolina “Beach Bash” with food and music,a tailgate before a football game (big time SEC tradition) the football game itself, a picnic for the Honors College. we also met professors in his department, gave his sister a tour(she’d never been there before) It was nice and a little nostalgic…
It seemed about 50/50 on kids in his year who had parents around, but then again many are local to SC and might have come for a day instead of the whole weekend.I suspect there are more freshman parents and some activities were geared to them…those we didnt attend.USC was nice in that many academic departments had open houses for the parents.

There was just a big thread about this in the Parent’s Forum a few days ago - I bumped it up so that you could see all the responses.

We are going to our senior’s PW. We went freshman and sophomore years, too. There were plenty of kids without parents; we made a point of including son’s roommate in a couple of meals.

We are 2 plane rides away, so we need to plan ahead for trips to campus. I like going on PW because I think it takes some of the pressure off son if he is swamped with work when we visit. There are plenty of activities available for us during the days and we can eat together and spend as much time together as makes sense.

We will fly in on Thursday and return home om Sunday. We’ll attend a couple of presentations for parents, attend a brunch put on by his department, go to a jazz concert and either a football or a pre-season basketball game and eat in restaurants.
