It appears OP has been banned?
NYS does not emancipate.
The duty for support comes up most times in child support cases where, child support can be paid until the child is 21. College is a moral and social obligation. It is not a legal obligation. Parents have no legal right to pay for a college education.
I do agree with @roycroftmom , that Op would be better served going to a shelter, phoenix house etc, where there will be a mckinney vento person/social worker on staff to corroborate the living situation and work with the school. It will be a much easier letter for the school counselor to write for the student living as an unaccompanied youth at the shelter than couch surfing at a friends. If OP pays rent in any form, he is not homeless, just self supporting.
Yikes! I am sorry to see this.
Was OP making things up or did he commit an offense on another thread?
Hey guys, So after speaking with a moderator my “hopefuldane611” account was banned because I apparently made multiple accounts, and i made this one about 2 years ago when I was still in school,(sorry for the embarrassing username)
But I appreciate all of the tips, I’m staying with my friends parents for the time being, and my guidance counselor pointed me in the direction of a local food pantry that helps out people in my position, so things are continuing to look up!
also @roycroftmom
about my bills, my phone is a tracfone and is no contract, so I pay with cards for minutes, and the car is in my name. The only thing my parents pay for is health and dental/vision insurance.
Sorry again for all the confusion everyone! I have been trying to sort this out with moderators as I totally forgot I had this old account!
Glad to hear that you are okay.
I hope your situation at your friend’s house is going okay, and I am certain you’ll find others locally there that will be able to help you.
Please keep posting here–lots of adults here wanting to help!
I’m so glad you’re back, safe and sound.
We’ve looked into declaring homelessness as that, like many posters here have said, would allow me to fill out a fafsa and get a federal loan based on my income alone and make this whole process easier. The GC did mention that as long as I do not live under my parents/they don’t support me for half the year, I would no longer be considered a dependent to them.
The nice thing here is that my friends parents took me in a month early, so I’m no longer at home. Something big worth mentioning is that considering the circumstances, they also mentioned that they aren’t going to charge me any rent. AND they said when the new academic year comes around, I can stay with them rent free even after my friend leaves for New Paltz as long as I’m in school and putting my savings towards that. Honestly, that is SO huge, considering the fact that I can put a good deal of my money towards school.
Of course, I still plan on contributing like one user posted. I will gladly help with chores around the house, and pay for food and other things such as bills for electric or oil if they request I do so. Perhaps my background in construction could help them out too if they need someone handy to fix things around the house.
I also was told that I have the option of using one of them as a cosigner for a loan through a private bank, as loans outside the federal student aid program don’t require a parent. of course that is not something I’m worried about at this time as I have a plan to pay for tuition in small increments like the plan says. But its still nice knowing an option is available if I need it.
I don’t have a credit card right now, but my GC told me also that I don’t need one right now, and that I should work on saving money first, then getting a credit card when I’m more stable. I switched my address over to my friends house for mailing information for Jefferson, so receiving stuff from them in the mail is taken care of.
So in review, my phone isn’t billed monthly, my car doesn’t have a payment, (it’s a 1999 honda civic, older, but I got it cheap and it gets me to where I have to go so I’m happy with it ), My car insurance is billed semi annually, and I’m putting away money for tuition each week. With the help of my wonderful friends parents, I can say things are good lately, just working a lot and trying to get as much money saved as possible.
You have a serious misunderstanding about what graduates of the service academies do after being commissioned as officers in their respective services. Most of them train for and serve as warfighters, such as: infantry officers, surface combat ship division officers (destroyers, cruisers, aircraft carriers), attack helicopter pilots, SEAL team members, artillery officers, fighter pilots, submariners, etc. Hardly “behind the scenes jobs.”
Besides, prior to your post suggesting that he could apply to one of the service academies, OP made it abundantly clear that he is not interested in joining the military.
Also, as @austinmshauri said, the military is NOT a scholarship service.
Good Luck to you and know that there are a lot of people on here that want to see you succeed! I have a feeling that you are going to achieve great things in your life. Keep us posted on how are doing.
It will not matter to the OP, but the US military is the largest supplier of scholarships-773,000 student-veterans (and families) have utilized their education benefits under the post 9/11 GI bill. There is nothing wrong with agreeing to serve in order to get education benefits, as long as you fulfill the conditions. It is an honorable path, albeit not of interest to OP.
I know this is an old thread, don’t know where you ended up OP but you should know that due to the physical abuse you mentioned you should qualify for a full dependency override. This negates all your parents information and turns you into a fully independent student, only requiring your financials for FAFSA. I did this through my current school, and since it’s a full need met school all tuition is covered in grants. You can do it directly through FAFSA, or ask for a waiver from a particular school. It will require a letter from you and someone like your guidance counselor and your friend’s parents to give extra information. Would be a game changer for you.
OP hasn’t been on CC since April. Closing thread.
