Are the 12 credits required for the student visa? Can he register for 12 credits and then drop one of the courses once in Italy or better yet convert it to Pass/Fail? Just thinking creatively.
Not sure, seems like full time student visa requires 12 hours.
I don’t know how much leeway is there.
I don’t know why USF has the 12 hours limit.
It shouldn’t be this complex.
It’s not specific to USF. S24 is being considered for Spring admission at another school and they also have this requirement that only up to 11 credits can be taken in the Fall semester at another school or CC. He will otherwise need to reapply as a transfer student.
Perhaps it has to do with coding and classification of students federally? I know that many scholarships and such will indicate that a student has to be a first-time university student since high school graduation. So perhaps taking enough hours to be considered full-time removes the ability to be classified as a freshman, even if one doesn’t have enough hours to be a sophomore?
From the U. of Montana (emphasis added):
You are considered an incoming freshman if you meet one of the following criteria:
- currently enrolled in high school;
- have graduated from high school but have not attempted 12 or more college-level semester credits;
- you are concurrently enrolled in high school and a college/university (e.g. Running Start or Dual Enrollment Program);
From the U. of Minnesota (emphasis added):
- You are a freshman applicant if you are still a high school student. (Even if you will complete college credits while in high school.)
- You are also a freshman if you have already graduated from high school, but have NOT enrolled at a college, university, or any other school after high school.
It’s not a problem if the Study Abroad is through the University. At NC State, some of the Spring Admits go for the NC State Study Abroad in Prague program which is 15 credits.
Trimester 2 report cards came out earlier this week. D24 got a GPA for T2 of 87%, which we are pleased with. D24 left the house today wearing an Austin College sweatshirt. We am thrilled and relieved that there’s a school she got into which she really loves, can see herself happy at for 4 yr, and is most likely going to be affordable (we’ll find out the prelim financial aid info in about a week from them…final financial aid award letter will be later once FAFSA gets its act together mid-March).
IMHO, THIS right here is the trophy we all chase in this process. Great job guiding her effectively through it all!
I remember being elated when my D20 committed to her school for the very same reasons. Looking forward to getting to this point soonish with D24.
Just back from another admitted students day at Gettysburg College. Our previous favorable impressions were confirmed… just a really nice school and community. After a short welcome speech, they had all the students attend a 10 AM class of interest (per a survey they filled out on registration for the event), while parents stayed back for a presentation. DD very much enjoyed her public policy class, helped along by the professor personally reaching out via email the day before and even sending a link to a TED talk that was the focus of the discussion for the class, which DD listened to on the drive up to Gettysburg. Class sizes are really small there, just 15 students were in this class, with 7 visiting admitted students. DD participated in the discussion and was complimented by one of the current students on her insights, which absolutely made her day!
There was a student panel for an hour answering questions from the audience, then we had lunch at the dining hall. Gettysburg is known for having great food, and I have read lots of raves on CC and other sites about the Servo (cafeteria) cookies. Still, it’s a college cafeteria, so I went in with very low expectations, which were completely blown away! I had a three-cheese panini with tomato basil soup, both of which I would gladly have again any day. The salad bar and fruit bar were full of interesting and very fresh looking ingredients. And the cookies… WOW… totally worthy of the hype and the calories. If I had access to them every day I would probably gain 10 pounds! Chocolate chip fresh out of the oven with high butter content. Our tablemates needed to opt for the gluten free version and they were equally as impressed. Overall, WINNING on food for sure!
After lunch, there was another panel with the President being interviewed by two seniors. All three very impressive and relatable. We left at that point, skipping out on the tours as DD has already done a tour and a week-long camp there. Missed out on the post-tour reception.
A great experience and another strong contender for DD’s #1.
DD checked High Point portal today and what a pleasant surprise: accepted to Honors program! I called yesterday and was told to expect another 1-2 week wait. So… it pays to keep checking portals!
Very excited for her, this program looks like a fabulous experience. She was grinning ear to ear. We are going to JMU admitted student day next weekend but I think this Honors acceptance will weigh heavily in her final decision.
YAY! Congrats!
That’s awesome. Congratulations!
Checking in here…after my dtr got rejected from her top two, but is strongly considering Coastal, she wanted to apply to U of Tampa; doesn’t check all the boxes, but some. Anyone considering U of Tampa?
We are not considering, but I have heard good things. Sorry about the top two and wishing her luck!
Thank you
Just be aware that U of Tampa does not guarantee housing for freshmen if that is of concern for you.
Mine is. One of her top choices. They are building new housing and you can put down a refundable housing deposit to get in the cue.
Is the housing for fall? Thank you for the tip!
Closer to spring I think. It said “by end of the year”
We looked into U of Tampa. We visited too. They are in a good location. It is quite expensive and their scholarship is very low. Comparatively, St.Leo is more affordable.
Got it…I thought I had heard their merit was pretty good? Coastal is very affordable for us, especially since we are moving to SC, so that is likely her choice.
