DD2024 is still waiting to hear from 3 more colleges (mostly reaches in acceptance and cost).

After scholarships/financial aid (with big brother in college so that aid will be removed when he graduates in 2yrs), our COAs are costing a full range:

  • ~$30K/yr
  • ~$40K/yr
  • ~$50K/yr
  • ~$60K/yr
  • ~$70K/yr (expected much higher scholarship that didn’t come through)

She was waitlisted at her kinda-#1 choice, which is in the $60K/yr category, so it was great that it was removed from our decision (so it’s not Mom being the bad person to say you can’t go there, it’s too expensive).

We’re grateful that she was accepted to 2 overnights at 2 colleges so she’ll get a good feel of the college (other than a short Admitted Student Day).

It is a tough choice especially balancing affordability vs kid’s future prospects.
As we all navigate life and career, where you went to college is a significant but a small factor as kids may decide to go to grad school and it is a life long learning.
Prudent tip is to conserve $ as much as we can. It may give more opportunities for the kids in the future.

Congrats! Now you can relax for a bit… until move in day!

I have loved following along on your D24’s college search! You have written many detailed posts on creating a balanced college list as well as analyzing fit for your D (and her family). Your approach should be a blueprint for others! Thanks for sharing your journey and congratulations!

ACCEPTED AT WHEATON. Now have to see if we can make it work! But a fantastic win after the shock of the UNE rejection.

@snappity207 I’m so pleased for your daughter!! I remember the dark and stormy night when she was deferred, but she didn’t give up. Good for her for the upward trend in grades, making the honor roll, and writing a terrific LOCI :blue_heart::lion:. S24 and I loved the vibe of Wheaton. I feel like they really consider the match between the kid and the Wheaton community in admissions. I think people in S24’s journey thread will want to know about your daughter’s big win when you have a chance !

Oh, that storm was killer - and we have snow on the way again tonight, so I was thinking “PLEASE don’t let there be another weather delay.” In fact, it was perfect timing - I’d decided last minute to WFH today, she had early release, and the “check your portal” email came in as I hung up my afternoon meeting, so we got to celebrate together. So glad I listened to my gut to stay home today!

It’s getting exciting!! Remind me again which schools your daughter is choosing between?

Still waiting to hear from College of the Atlantic - it really comes down to finances for us, I think we will still go to the SMCC advising day on Friday as that is our definite affordable option, but I am waiting to hear from my colleague who had offered to help with the tuition waiver letter - I’m in the CIC system and the college was selected as a choice way back, but apparently dealing with the university myself is not unexpected.

A friend pointed out something that others in this group might appreciate as well - D24 goes to a semi-private high school and a lot of her friends are VERY high stats kids, applying to the very high stats schools… but she is the only who got into her first choice. Others were rejected in ED/EA from T20s, NESCAC, etc, and are landing in absolutely great schools - don’t get me wrong - but not their first picks. Mine absolutely clawed her way in, it was never a definite, but she got in to her top pick, and the win is such sweet reward for my ND / late bloomer/resilient kid.

It has been a really tough year for a lot of our high stat friends. Almost none got their first choice, they got into great schools and got merit in a lot of cases, but very few got into their number 1 even when they applied ED. My kids have never had the drive to be super high stat, they prefer A’s and B’s in college prep plus sports, friends and jobs. It’s worked well and so far kid one and two have had great choices that were good fits for their academic profiles and our budget.

Totally agree.
In our case, S24’s 1st choice was our flagship and he didn’t get it. One of his school friends got into UF. Lot of other kids didn’t.
S24 got into our family’s #1 USF!
It is about the right expectations. T50 are tough to get into for most kids.
Other than this thread, this forum feeds into that frenzy.
In a way, those rejections will help these kids in the long run.

It’s now a choice between Purdue, which we are visiting in April and Minnesota, which we visited last week. Purdue is ranked #1 for his major and has been his top pick for several years, ever since we visited for S23. Minnesota has a great program with small class sizes and tons of undergraduate research opportunities, which S24 really likes.

What great results! So many great choices to pick from! Your S24’s results are a great example of how you really are not “doomed” if you don’t have a perfect GPA. :grinning:

DD waitlisted W&M! This includes a guaranteed January admission after a first semester abroad or at CC at home, so the actual champagne was broken out and polished off by my me and my MIL. :clinking_glasses: DD deliberating between London or Florence for fall. WOW… what a ride!

Great outcome!
We are going to USF admitted students day today in Tampa! So, biased there
We’ve several friends’ kids who go to Purdue. Very good school, especially for engineering. As a parent, I feel Purdue has another thing going for students, it is so isolated kids will get bored and study

You cannot say that about USF! Clearwater is 45 minutes away.
S24 wanted to go to Miami area schools and finalized with USF as it is a better school.
Are you in-state for Purdue? Most of our friends pay OOS and it can be a good chunk. My friend in IN sends 2 daughters to NKU! They’re both very smart kids (Computer Science and PreMed).
Some of my OH friends chose Purdue over OSU.
