Parents of Tall Boys....

Hi!

I have an 11 year old son (6th grader) who is seemingly tall for his age based on his peers. I am not all that tall 5’6" and his father is 6’0". He currently stands at 5’4", weighs 110 pounds, but what astonishs me the most is he is wearing a man’s size 11 shoe (10.5 in dress shoes) So to parents of tall boys/men, were they always tall for their age? Or did anyone have a tall youth who just leveled off and never was considered a “tall” adult? (For the purpose of this discussion lets call at tall male adult 6 feet or taller)

My grandfather was a pretty tall man 6’2" and I have some male first cousins that are all over 6’4" so I know there is some “tallness” in the gene pool. Height calculators put him at 6’3" but he has already out paced his father in shoe size…will he ever grow into those hoofs?

Edited to add…his “wing span” is crazy too…my husband in 5’11" (not his father) and when my husband stands with his arms straight in the air, my son’s fingertips come to the base of my son’s palms…what’s that about?

My son has towered over everyone since birth. At elementary school graduation, principal said they had to kick him out since he’s taller than all the teachers. He was 6 feet tall in 7th grade. He now seems to have leveled off at 6’4", size 13 shoe, age 17. I’m 6’2", wife 5’6". My younger son is now 6’1", size 11.5, just turned 14.

I have a 13 year old son who is 6 ft 3 inches and still growing! I have older sons who are also tall- all over 6 ft but none were ever like this one - he has always been off the charts per the pediatrician. Yes, I have known some kids who seemed so tall compared to others and then just slowed down and ended up being probably under 6 feet tall.
Your son’s foot size does seem quite large compared to his height and I have found with my own 4 boys that the feet always grew first then the growth spurt.

At 12, S1 was about 5’2". At 17 he was 6’3". and wears a size 13. My youngest was 5’4" forEVER but has topped out at about 5’11" with a size 11 foot. Their dad is 6’ even, and I’m just barely 5’5" so spend most holidays feelings like a midget!!

My 6’4" uncle got called a shrimp for years. He grew about a foot during a high school junior year abroad, and when he got back, no one called him that any more (if they even recognized him). Like him, I was the shortest one in my class for most of my life, only hit 5’1" when I was 15, and ended up 5’9" at 19. Genes are amazing.

My sons are 6’5" and 6’6" but feet are not all that big-like 12 and 1/2 for one and about 13 for the other . I may not be remembering shoe sizes exactly but neither has particularly big feet in relation to size. The pediatrician’s estimates seemed pretty accurate-would be tall and thin. I’m 5’6" and husband is 6’7". Have a 6’11" nephew.

I am 5’5 and H is 5’10. S is just over 6’2.
My H’s side of the family has what we call the “big people”. Uncles and cousins ranging in heights from 6’4 to 7’2.

It was estimated to us that S would 6’3 to 6’4 at one point. He is 17 now and I am pretty sure has leveled off!

DS is finally a tall boy. Growing up, he was always really short, and it didn’t help that by moving he was almost a year younger than everybody else, since he started kindergarten at 4 going on 5. Starting freshman year he was 5 ft. Just measured in at 6ft and still going. Dad is 6’4", I am 5’9", maternal grandfather is 6’4". It shocks people to see him now, since he was always known as squirt, or lil’buddy, etc. We are expecting 6’2" at the least.

“The pediatrician’s estimates seemed pretty accurate”

People who’ve seen hundreds of kids develop can become geniuses at predicting traits. When I was a short and plump 6-year-old, my first ballet teacher took one look at my feet and predicted that I’d have a ballerina’s body (i.e. 5’9" or 5’10" with long legs and skinny). Too bad I had no interest or athletic talent in that arena, because she was exactly right.

Our pediatrician put DS2 at an adult height of 5’8" based on his size at 2. All was progressing as expected until the summer before he turned 16. He grew 3 inches
IN 4 WEEKS! We have the hash marks on the kitchen door to prove it! He is now 18 and 6’. DS1 is also 6’ exactly as predicted ;). Being 5’4" with a 6"2’ husband I need a footstool to even appear in family photos!

My S created his own growth chart, he was always off it (though proportional)…he is 16 now, and is somewhere between 6 and 6’ 1" I would guess, and he has slowed down with growing. I am guessing he is going to be 6’ 2" or 6’ 3" when he finally finishes growing. It is especially stunning with him these days, in his music program he is around a lot of kids his age who tend to be relatively smaller stature, and it is kind of interesting. I am 5’ 11 or so, my wife is 5’8.

My ex was 6’4"- his mom and dad were both around 5’6". No one’s quite sure where he came from lol.

When we started dating as freshmen in high school, he was 5’11". His mom said that he was average height until 6th grade when he started growing very quickly and at the end of 8th grade, he was about 5’8". When we broke up sophomore year of college, he was 6’4" with a size 13 shoe.

Not to scare you, but what’s the doctor have to say about his height and his wingspan? There is a disorder out there that I would consider talking with your physician about called Marfan’s Syndrome.

I’m not saying your son has it or is at risk for developing those problems, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask…

My S was always tall. The biggest kid in the class, 90th to 100th percentile on the growth charts, all his life. His grandfather on dad’s side was 6"3, tall for his generation. His dad, 6’, I’m 5’7", so just a little taller than average. He was 6’4 at HS graduation, size 14 shoes. He was not happy to discover he’s grown in the last year, another inch or two. Though he loves the athletic advantage, and uses it, it is literally a pain many other times, on long airline flights, and with the inevitable head bumps.

When asked, I ascribe his growth to vegetarian food and little milk (family diary allergy).

S2 was 5’8" and wore a size 12 shoe at his Bar Mitzvah (age 13). He broke 5 feet in 4th grade – was taller than his teacher that year. By the end of 8th grade, he was 6’2". Is now 6’4", and wears a size 15. We call his shoes aircraft carriers; they come in ginormous boxes from Zappos.

S1 is 5’11" and wears a size 13.

S2 has been taller than S1 since 1st grade and has always been at 99+%tile for height.

Their other young adult male cousins are 6"2 and 6’3". The height comes form my side of the family, as DH is a shade under 5’10" and is the tallest on his side. I’m 5’8", with two sisters, 5’7" and 5’10" (we all wear a 9.5-10 shoe), and two brothers, 6’3" and 6’4". Comes from my mom’s Germanic/Norwegian side of the family.

My two boys have always been tall. 22" long at birth, always had long legs. 18yo is probably done at 6’1" and 15 yo is still growing… 5’ 10’’ currently. They aren’t especially tall but have 34 inch inseams. Funny thing is I am only 5’3" and their dad is only 5’8". My g-father and my brothers are all over 6 feet tall so guess that explains it.

My adult son was always tall for his age and stopped growing at about 6’2". Interestingly, his feet were a size 12 in 5th/6th grade, but never changed, even as he grew another 5 or 6 more inches.

S is 13 and is 5’11" right now - waiting anxiously to crack the 6’ ft mark! It was amazing to watch last winter - last August, when we were out on vacation, he was just a hair shorter than his sister who’s 5’7". Fast forward through the winter and he was about 4" inches taller than her - now the tallest in the family! They do go through growth spurts - I expect another one is coming in about 2-3 years. My brother is about 6’3" - although both my parents are under 6 ft!

He wears a size 12 shoe. H is now able to wear his cast offs :)

I’ve got three over 6 ft. tall. Interestingly the physician predictions at age 2 was within an inch of where one ultimately stopped growing and #2 who is twenty is right now where the physician guessed. 7 pound 22" inch babies…all three. The oldest grew into his twenties and I’m interested to see where my college soph is at Christmas height wise…but we mature physically slowly in our family. Three is still growing. They got bigger as they came along…the oldest is the shortest and the youngest is the tallest. Fortunately they don’t have really big feet. My 6’ 5" sib had size 14 boats and we were forever tripping over those shoes. OP hopefully your son plays tennis…height and wingspan are great physical attributes for covering the net.

S is tall, 6’6". Always over the curve since birth - 24". The calculator said he would be 6’2".
He was chubby from 11 - 19. Then he lost about 75 lbs. He’s slim now at ~ 200. His feet were kindof small - now a size 13 which look enormous to me. H is 6’1", I’m 5’8". Both granddads were 6’2".

As someone mentioned upthread, S grew the most during a HS senior year abroad. Interesting…
