Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Does anyone know if I can put an eggcrate into a space saver bag and have it survive several days compressed?

Fallgril – may only be available on walmart online

I’m getting a bit panicky reading one week, or 4 days, or I sent him out the door this morning. 17 or 18 days here (depends on which day we go). I’m not pushing the packing or laundry with D yet. I think it will be easier once her younger brother goes back to HS next week. She did make some tentative plans to meet the roommate next week. Until then I won’t know much about fridges/microwaves, etc.

I found a small microwave on sale at Walmart today. I did buy it, but I’ll take it back if she doesn’t need it. While looking for sticky tac/poster putty I realized that every time I step into Walmart or Target my brain turns to mush. I still never found the poster putty. I’ll have to remember to stop at the office store next week.

A lot of our favorites are summertime only types of food as we love summer veggies. D’s been getting many of her favorites for awhile now, but I think much of our garden is done.

rrah: I found poster putty at Staples but it wasn’t where I thought it would be. It was in the teachers supplies and not with the tape and glue. Just FYI

I’m used to cooking every night. I’ve basically always worked full time (took 6 months off with S and 9 with D) and I’m VERY organized. Maybe too much sometimes but it’s the only way I could manage it with working. I make a list with what we are having every night and make sure that we have all the ingredients for the each recipe. It is very rare for us to go out. Luckily I like to cook. I do wish though that someone else would clean up most nights!!

My problem is going to be cooking for 3. All of my “family” recipes feed 10 since both my parents came from families of 6 and 7 kids. My mom had five brothers and since they were all considerably younger than her, they were at our house a lot growing up. Point is, I can cook for six or more, but struggle with little meals. I watched barefoot contessa today on the food channel. She makes it look so completely easy.

sharonohio – I would assume that foam is eminently compressible. Anything on the instructions or web site for those bags that says “do not use for foam of any kind”?

We just got back from Kohl’s – in addition the sales prices, it was a “no tax” day (so they took 10% off) and we got an additional 20% off everything. My D is going to college with Vera Wang towels…

Modadunn: I’ll see how it is to cook for just 2. Been a while - 21 years!! I know that I used to do it. I typically cook for 3 and then do a separate meal for D because she is so picky. Wonder what she will eat at college. Hope they have chicken all the time but that is not my problem but hers.

LOL, My 15 yo eats SO much, the recipes for 5 will still work just fine for us–we may actually have leftovers this year (which he will eat around 9 pm when he’s STARVING again!) I have to admit, he’s quite a baker, when push comes to shove he’ll make brownies (with a mix) or cookies. Not so good for the weight watchers, but I can resist!

I hear you SJTH… I am losing the biggest eater in the house in my son, which is why cooking for six (when there are only four of us now) worked.

Rochester - that will be my youngest D, I think she will surely grow feathers as she eats so much chicken. ALTHOUGH… having been a house guest several times this summer and being a considerate one at that, she always ate what they put in front of her - if only to try. She dropped a few pounds but also learned that she actually likes Salmon and swordfish!

She is actually also our resident baker and she doesn’t like chocolate! She typically bakes for her dad and brother (and his friends). But as I said earlier… I love cookies… so I had to move the cookie jar out of the kitchen! People might think it’s weird that we have a cookie jar in the living room, but hey, it works for me!

I’ll have to look at Walmart.com.
Thanks for mentioning the poster putty, I’m pretty sure it’s not on D’s list, but she will need it.

I feel like George Jetson: “Jaaaane, get me off this crazy thing!”

Beyond the poster putty, I am trying not to forget the 3M poster hanger hooks etc. They really do work great if you start with a clean surface. :)

chintzy, me too. Two weeks and one day left with S1.

He actually did talk about classes he wants to take at dinner last night. That was positive.

Well, DS met the roommate last night. I suggested that he text him to see when they would be getting in town. Turns out they’re staying in the same hotel and ten minutes later they were in the lobby saying hello… Can someone please explain why this hadn’t already occurred to DS and DH???

I’m not even sure putting the cookies in the living room would help me. Sweet tooth beyond sweet tooth and I look it. Need to lose about 100 lbs I think. Nothing ever seems to work. That being said I can jog a 5K - slowly but I can still do it without feeling like I’m going to pass out. I just need to eat better and less. I can say it but have no will power to do it. Hoping that having the kids out of the house the junk food will be gone as well since my H only likes dark chocolate and I will only eat it in an emergency. You know – those chocolate emergenies ;)

Zetesis, we experimented with the foam and the space saver bags. I was more concerned that the foam would not expand properly again but I don’t think its a problem. My goodness the tote is enormous. We had the comforter, mattress pad, 2 bath sheets, 1 washcloth, 2 full sets of sheets and the egg crate in and there was still empty space. Practiced compressing. Definitely needs to have more stuff in it. I’m really hopeful that between the two totes they will hold all of D’s clothing and soft things so that the only other things in the car are books and hard objects. That would really be terrific.

Also, please wash those Vera Wang towels. They were so wonderful (really soft and fluffy) that we picked up a set but after washing them, they had threads hanging out all over the place so I returned them.

Laptop arrived late yesterday and works wonderfully. D had a smile on her face after setting up the fingerprint reader and having it work.

Rochestermom,

We too will be going back to cooking for 2 and it’s been 22 years. Told DH that first meal out with just the two of us was to be Mexican since it was the last meal that we ate out before I delivered DS. I love to cook so its going to be interesting. Both DH and I promised to get serious about weight loss without either kid home to plan around. I need to restart my exercising that I stopped after getting mildly hurt last year.

DH is currently taking S shopping for a suit - his first!

Thanks for the tip on the Vera Wang towels – they’re in the machine right now! We’ll see how they fare …

I purchased 3m tape specifically designed for posters – its double stick and supposedly comes off without leaving any marks. Only negative complaints I read anywhere about it was that it was a bit difficult to get the second side covering off.
