Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

You, too, sevmom!

I hear you, eddie. Although I don’t post that much (nothing too exciting to add), this is a nice place to be. I appreciate sharing the journey with all you lovely people.

Shawbridge: I too have no recollection of a speaker at my graduation. I’m sure that there was one. However I did party the night before and well let’s just say started a bit early on graduation day. I was fine at graduation but I didn’t really pay attention. Only thing I remember was after walking across the stage my advisor was there and he gave me a big hug. He and his family moved into the same neighborhood that we live in just 6 months after we did. His kids baby sat mine. In college he used to go out drinking occassionally with the us so I’ve been friends with him actually longer than I’ve known my husband. For me though graduation was just a “good I’m DONE!”.

I think I have a seriously below average memory. I can’t remember anything about my graduation other than the hideous orange color of the gown to celebrate UT’s anniversary. But then I can’t remember the names of any of my teachers. I can’t remember where I was on 9/11 or what day of the week my kids were born or even how old I am without doing the math. But I have an essentially photographic memory of anything I have written down and fairly good memory of stuff I read. Stuff I hear or see (other than the written word) or experience blurs from memory almost instantly.

We’re similar, TA. I do not have a good auditory memory. Most of my school years were difficult, until I could study what I am good at. My theory is that most teachers are auditory learners and don’t realize that some people NEED visuals. How on earth anyone can give a history lesson without referring to a map, I will never understand.

Well, your good vibes helped. DD passed her exams. She did pretty well, actually. I am beyond relieved today. In the worst class as they sat for the final one fellow asked ‘how screwed are we?’ So she wasn’t the only one having trouble. Glad that’s over. Now off to see my ill aunt in the nursing home. Have a good day!

I hear ya!

It wasn’t until I tried to learn a bit of a foreign language (for a vacation) by listening to CDs in the car that I realized that I am SO a visual learner. My retention rate was close to zero. I did better with Spanish, because I had it in school and could visualize the words. But German? I couldn’t visualize, so I couldn’t learn.

Wynton Marsalis will be the commencement speaker at the University of Vermont next week. His son will be a graduate. Love his music. Hope his speaking skills are good as well!

My undergrad posted some “graduation through the years” pictures on Facebook. I found one of the year before mine and posted it on my page…looked just like mine…football field, no walking across a stage.

woody, I think Cory Booker should probably end up being a great speaker. Same with Wynton Marsalis,Mom2009. He should be interesting. Enjoy!

Hi guys. Super early early meeting day today, even earlier than usual. So brkfst was 8 hours ago ;)

I found a link to Costolos speech – here it is if you want to check it out.
Cheers!

What are we doing on the second page? I will fix that. Odessagirl just put a one word status on Facebook. It reads “DONE!”

I spent the afternoon getting my hair colored and cut and looking back over the past four years with my hairdresser. He’s done my hair for a long time. I laughed and told him I now realized how silly some of the things I worried about “back in the day” were. It was fun to look back though.

D is done, the sun came out, and she’s drinking beer with friends on the Lawn. I really hope that’s not illegal! ;)

congrats to both of your Ds, eddie and sabaray.

Our old Acceptances thread is showing at the bottom of the screen as a similar thread. I clicked on it. Lot of names from the past and many many that I don’t think we’ve heard from since.

Check in, please fireflyscout.

I also wonder about joylenesmith (sp?) and her son.

Life is good. Will be in C’ville next Wednesday, B’burg on Thursday! Can’t wait.

missypie, I think there may have been another thread on which we conversed. Did that also list where people were going?

Gosh, I wonder if D2 has the last graduation date of this spring group… May 25th???

Congratulations to all the graduates!! (so far)

D wasn’t thrilled that it was already time to pick up cap and gown today, graduation is approaching too fast for her (June 4).

peonies…that may be the last day although D2 doesn’t pick up her cap and gown for a while! Seems like so many are earlier.

I know, it seems early to pick up the cap & gown. I guess they had some sort of senior thing where they could order a class ring, pick up a yearbook and c& g, and I don’t know what else. D’s graduation is on a Tuesday so H has take the whole week off. Sort of a production.

And yes there seems to be a wide range of grad dates. Sort of surprising that colleges don’t coordinate their schedules more than they do, considering they do coordinate for sports.
