Oh moda - could the vomiting be a result of nerves? I think that would be worse than being ill with the flu or food poisoning. All I can say is 'Hurry Sunday"!

Oregon - I am so sorry to hear that it was just a consult. Sending good mojo.

PS H is now calling our home ‘Entry-level Land’ as opposed to the mere B&B that it has been.

PPS - For all of you who were waiting with baited breath (or is it bated breath?), MIL is doing well at home, confirming for me once again that she will be at my funeral. :)

Modadunn, hope your S has a super fast recovery. Over winter break, H came down with the gastrointestinal thing and was sick for 5 days. S caught it (at least I think it was the same thing, vomiting & chills) but was “only” down for a day. Don’t know for sure if it was the same crud, but S has always seemed to recover more quickly than the rest of us. Hoping your S will behave similarly!

kmcmom13, sorry about the added stress. And speaking of stress, oregon101, oh my goodness!

D has always been annoyed by S. I think she’s been irritated since he was born. Feels she should have been an only child. I don’t want to over-do it, but feel I have to defend him all the time because she’s so critical. And I feel self-conscious about it because I think S is very similar to me, so I feel like I’m defending myself.

D used her research skills to find and contact a real-live HR person. The response she received: well, if the software screened you out, you are obviously not qualified for the position. Don’t know if she’s going to get through this wall or not.

Woody – whew. I read about the many passengers trying to get on Metro North trains just North of the city and having to watch many completely packed trains pass by. I hope this morning’s commute is a whole lot easier.

Oregon – will S let someone (his wife, perhaps) accompany him to the consult? Will he get a second opinion? (That is something I would most definitely pay for if D needed serious surgery.) My mom suffered greatly from having a dangerous surgery without a second opinion – every other doctor who was called in while she was in ICU expressed some surprise that she’d had that surgery to start with given some other conditions and less risky options.

Moda-- I hope he’s done with puking, and can now rest and regain strength.

C-Q – That’s frustrating beyond belief. DH despises HR screening at his company – they screen out really good candidates. There was finally a revolt with the tech staff (because the HR folks know nothing about tech other than buzz-words) and they implemented a new rule that any resume brought in via a current employee must be forwarded to the hiring manager.

Looks like we’re done with the 60 degree weather (which has been gorgeous) for a day or two – 3 inches of snow this morning, but it is supposed to be warm again for the weekend. It sounds weird, but this is actually pretty typical for January around here. February and March – that’s the snow to dread.

It’s nearly 4 in the afternoon… and i think s is feeing better and is now sleeping. I went and bought all kinds of “healthy” water, including pedialyte and this other stuff that was like $3 for like 8oz. He also managed to drink an Odwalla (or however you spell that) that was specific to well being. So in my arsenal I also bought this stuff called,Karma Water? Weird stuff. All the vitamins etc are in the cap and then you push it into the water for what they claim is a higher concentration of vitamins (claiming that the vitamins minerals etc are less effective if having been in water). I have no idea. But I thought the concept was cool enough and the price point (comparatively) low enough that why not?

So I get back from the store and D2 calls to say she was at the health center thinking she had appendicitis but then later was dx’d as having shingles! The child had like one pox when she was 6 months old and since exposed to S who had chicken pox at the time, they wouldn’t vaccinate her. So they put her on pain killers and I guess that’s it? But she said she was glad to know the rash wouldn’t spread as it was very painful. fortunately she likes sweats?

Freezing here… H went to Duluth today for business and his car temp said -34, and that was without the wind!

Missy - did D1 get off alright? Am curious to know what her suggestions were in dealing with D2?

D flew as far as the east coast yesterday. She is staying with one of her apartment mates, then the two of them are actually leaving for Budapest tomorrow.

Moda, shingles in someone your D’s age? How terrible!

The rules for the MCAT almost made ME have a panic attack. As a person who is hypothyroid (“always cold”) but who also has hot flashes, the idea of not being able to put on and take off a sweater would make me crazy. Good thing that they’re young, for the most part!

Woody, glad the train issue turned out alright. I was worried.

One of older D’s suggestions for dealing with younger D has created a crisis of sobbing at the present moment. Older D said we should take control of younger D’s money, so she can’t puchase anything of which we disapproved. H decided to spring this on younger D (without even knowing how recently she withdrew $ for bad stuff) on the car ride on the way home from school, on an afternoon when she had to be somewhere after school. I haven’t agreed to the punishment and H’s timing is horrible.

Oh,Moda – shingles? I really hope the medication works and works quickly for her. I bugged my doc about getting the vaccine last year, but she said I needed to be 60. Honestly, I can’t understand the point of waiting. (I guess I’ll add it to my, “If sealants are a good idea for kids, why aren’t you sealing my teeth too?” question, to which the reply always seems to be that they don’t do it once you’re over 18.)

Oh Moda… poor thing. Shingles can be sooo painful!

Thanks for asking about D! The train outage made the news - no wonder after that terrible Metronorth accident a couple of months ago!

Apartment hunting is awful! A short term studio is nearly impossible to come by - and they are soooo expensive. All the people she would like to room with are already in apts. now so she has to wait for their leases to be up - around June-July. I guess she will do some couch surfing till then…

If D, S and his GF want to room together, they can do so at a great (read ‘affordable’) price, but I can’t see that happening.

Modadunn, my D got shingles spring semester her sophomore year. While her friends were teasing her for having an “old person’s disease”, her school’s health center said it was fairly common at the school. In fact, I was contacted via CC last year by a mother who had a freshman D at my D’s school, who also came down with shingles.

My D had them in her eyes (or an eye?) and said they were very painful. She didn’t get diagnosed right away; thought her acne was just REALLY bad at first.

Hope your D recovers quickly and they’re not too horrible.

I don’t think they gave her an rx besides pain killers of some kind. Is there something else they SHOULD have prescribed even though it is, after all, a virus. She thought she might have appendicitis, so I am hopeful it doesn’t get worse. She did go to classes today so at least she’s functional.

Missy - I think watching the money is a very good idea. However, I will tip you off that one of the tricks to getting around this is owing a friend, a school fee (tshirt, sports). H was very naive and was asked like three times for $20 for something related to sports or school before he caught on.

S is feeling much better and now has a headache which I think might be mostly related to not having so much as a cup of coffee all day. But he said that despite drinking ALL the water etc I got for him today, he has only barely gone to the bathroom but once! I am assuming he was very dehydrated.

KMC… too funny about humans being delicious. Not a fan of people flaking out and hope it never resembles me! :)

Moda - Have they suggested Acyclovir? It is a good choice, at least early in the infection, in reducing the severity of the outbreak.

PS All three kids were stranded on Metronorth tonight but at least H was able to get them at some stations further down the line. No accidents, just s***** service.

Sounds like we’ll all be glad when this week is over!
I know I will…although we will then be one week closer to the dreaded move and whatever fresh hell that brings ;)

Moda, I am sending your son a super dose of mcat mojo, and healing powers to your d!

LOL I think he took the bus to the tropics.

The weather forecast is highly redundant - cold, snow, cold, snow… Shaw will share some of his warmth when he surfaces again, I hope.

Good luck on those jobs and exams! My guess on the rejected yet referred resume is that it states an insufficient number of years of experience.

Crazy cold again yesterday. Schools here were cancelled which rarely happens.

cq…can the CEO hand deliver the resume or make a call to have HR consider it? Since they asked her to apply I would think that would get their attention.

A “dream” job for D1 was listed yesterday. She applied and is hoping to get an interview. There was also a listing for a paid internship with a local sports organization. She has done everything they are asking for. The qualifications state that you must have a bachelor’s degree. I told her to apply for it as it could be a way to network and move up in the organization. She is resisting since it is a year long “internship” rather than a job. Still trying to get her to apply. She got a call from H’s HR director yesterday who asked her what she wants to do. She said she will keep her eyes open for her and they are also meeting for lunch on Monday. Hoping things start to pop!

Have a good weekend everyone! Heading to the lake for some alone down time! H has a work retreat and the girls have tickets to the local hockey tourney that runs this weekend. I think they need some sisterly bonding. I am only packing yoga pants and sweatshirts and plan on walks in the snow, reading and some digital scrapping of my London/Paris trip. Of course there will be wine and a nice soak in my soaking tub. Hoping this helps for relaxation!

Have fun NM, good thought s for your D. She sounds like she is putting one foot in front of the other. Hard times.

My D is still broken up with BF. I think she hopes he will “come around” though she did say she is going to need clothes if she is going to date again. I offered her $500. She was thrilled as she lives on loans and tries to nanny whenever she can. The last thing I want her to feel is desperate right now. H just rolls with me–he has given up–it is not that he disapproves but more he would not have thought of it or felt it was necessary.

S is determined to do everything his way. He is an anxious person and he also latches onto whatever is right in front of him. He has zero ability to look into the future and make a decision based on the big picture. I did hear DIL sounding very frustrated with him. H is going to email them this weekend regarding their finances. We have completed the agreement we made 18 months ago and are finished paying for his education. I had been talking about giving them more for the next few months while he finished his last quarter but am going to wait and see now.

ALERT! S just called as I was writing this post and he actually talked to me in a mature and OPEN way. He has gotten another opinion, is now in agreement to do the less invasive procedure and has called his insurance and asked for a referral to another surgeon. He does not want to come here but did not say he would not. He accepts that “You guys are doing and amazing job. You are still young and your dad needs to be there if there is an emergency. You and DIL would not know what to do and he would”.
So then we had a nice discussion re: H’s schedule. I also offered to pay for train tickets for all of them and to secure a car seat.
Golly Goodness.

When I posted last I was in a gloomy place. It took me awhile to realize that a big part was the hotel room. It is a lovely place with great people but every room has only one very small, partly covered, window and it was grey outside. We have now stayed there for two visits and both were unhappy times. (G’son’s birth and now this). I am insanely affected by my environment and was in that room with G’son for 4 hours while the others went to the doctors. Drives my family crazy and D has diagnosed me with a sensory disorder. I agree with her. So I have found a different place overlooking the water and I know this will be a good thing.

Have a great weekend. We have sun, my kid acted like a normal person and my D wants to take a trip after her boards and H actually remembered to go to the store to buy the bracelet I so nicely put on hold for him. Now if he just remembers to give it so me Feb. 14th or 16th(anniversary):).

Mod! we are all sending the most amazing energy to your S on his MCATS!!!

It took a bit of work, but I finally was able to log-in on the 2nd try using my computer; haven’t figured out how to navigate yet on my phone.

Fairy dust for Modadunn’s S with the MCAT. Oregon101, what a nice call from your S. Your D sounds like she’s doing okay and trying to move forward.

Progress for my D! The CEO has been out of the office attending a conference, but the COO contacted the hiring manager directly and send (her? him?) D’s resume and cover letter with a hearty recommendation. D’s happy, she doesn’t know if she will be considered, but at least she got a chance to actually apply for the position.

Then in a slight step backward, late afternoon at work a rash started appearing on her hands. When I picked her up (we’re sharing a car) we decided to try some Benadryl to see if it responded. After about an hour it was not responding and was spreading up her arms, so we went to a walk-in medical clinic. They prescribed Prednisone and said if it doesn’t respond to Benadryl they need to treat it with steroids. They said it’s hard to know the cause for sure. She’s not aware of any new foods/lotions or other things she was exposed to that would have suddenly caused the rash to appear.

New semester began at work this past Tuesday and we’ve had major computer issues (servers failing). I’m in IT but support the software, not the hardware. Not sure what’s going on but it hasn’t been fun.

Had to recover the password (I guess that shows how very long it has been since I was last forced to log in ) but it seems to work. Not seeing the quote function that was promised, but maybe my eyes will notice it soon.

C_Q – I feel for you on the server issues. D’s college had major problems with servers three days before finals and extending into finals week one term, and it was a terrible problem giving the reliance on Blackboard for submissions.

Hoping Moda-S has the mojo on the MCAT.

Great news for your D on the job front C_Q!

Figured out the edit function: the little doohickey that looks like a spiked wheel at the upper right hand corner of your posts is the edit request (because nothing says “edit” like a spiked wheel? because the little word “edit” took up too much landscape? because everyone but me knows that this is the hot symbol for edit?)

I’m late coming to this, but tried to log in today, couldn’t remember my password; asked for a reset link, which didn’t work “Sorry, we’re having troubles.” Then the link expired, but I logged in using what I thought was my password anyway.

Took me a while to find this forum. Found the bookmark feature so hope that will help? Is this new format an improvement? Guess we’ll find out.

All the best to Moda-S today, and for C-Q’s D, too.
