Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Went with Son on Friday up to transfer orientation. So stressful! The individual advisement was basically just to see if the transfer student has all his core requirements. Then sent for a group “advisement” with the History Department, then through asking questions, found out that we needed to go to secondary ed. dept. to get a list of those requirments.

The stressful part was someone with senior status, who doesn’t need the core classes, trying to find open classes, after all the current students have already registered. It took hours. We have him in 4 classes that count toward his major, plus he is 4th on the wait list for another. I can tell that I am going to have to get his audited transcript and the graduation requirements and plug everything in myself to be able to tell him exactly what to take each semester. I guess I had not wanted to “push the boulder” anymore, but will do it because it is necessary.

The crazy thing is (and this seems to be the case with a whole lot of large state schools) is that there is a huge push to get them out in 4 years (this school even has a financial incentive to do so), but then there is very poor advisement and few open classes…meaning that it is very likely that a student won’t graduate in 4 years. Alas.

Before we drove home, we stopped at Sonic for a cherry limeade. A Sonic cherry limeade makes a lot of things better.

woody, D is living in Chicago now. And yes, missypie, a Sonic Cherry limeade (or a cream pie shake) makes a lot of things better!

Sadly I’ve never been to a Sonic. Non around here. I do see them advertised on TV at times and have longed to try it…

RM, sounds like you need a ROAD TRIP! You can visit missypie and me and visit lots of Sonic drive-in’s!

Just read that a law school classmate was sentenced on Friday to 20 years for securities fraud. I remember him…lived with his parents nearby on the most exclusive street in town, never worked very hard, real affable guy. Guess he used his affable manner to talk folks into his Ponzi schemes.

I’m not a big Sonic fan…but the cherry limeade really is pretty fantastic.

A super nice banker I know is sitting in the federal pokey because of his swindling a bunch of folks. I think being affable is pretty much required if you’re a con man.

Did someone say road trip? ;)

I haven’t been away al year (see earlier comment about the resort phenom) but am finally planning a trip my my gf from Newfoundand. Sadly, our third friend can’t come this year due to a kitchen Reno and a promise to a niece, but the other one and I don’t want to break the tradition so we’re going to meet up in the SF area for a week in September. She’ll be coming up the coast from San Diego but since my time away is short, I’m thinking about meeting her in Monterey for some coastal shenanigans, then up to Napa via Muir Woods/Marin and then cap it off with San Francisco. (I think I’d feel too rushed to try to put in so cal on this trip.)

I’d love suggestions of neat places to see/stay etc. in those area from those who’ve traveled it more than I.

I’m in for a road trip! Where’s the bus? I can be home and packed in 1/2 hour. :)

Actually H and I are going away for 16 days in a few weeks. We will be celebrating out 30 anniversary in Alaska. A place that my H has always wanted to go. Me – after this winter I’m not sure that I’m really ready to see more snow but who would have known when we planned it. 1 week on a cruise and then 1 week land tour plus a couple of travel days. Should be fun! I know that I’m looking forward to getting away from work.

I’ve decided that my boss is just crazy. He indicates that you have authority to do something but then totally questions any decisions if they aren’t the way that he believes is should be done. So as long as you agree with him and do everything the exact way that he thinks it should be done everything is fine. Just the fact that my hours are a bit off from his (I come in much earlier than he does and leave earlier) is enough to set him off. Oh well – corporate policy is that we have flex time. So he really doesn’t have much to stand on. :)

Aw, I just got back from my hike-n-swim morning routine and saw a post from mcson saying goodby to his college pals as he preps to come work for us next month… Makes me remember the bittersweet feelings post-college…without quoting it all to draw attention to it, here’s part I lifted: " Thank you for all the times, good and bad; for the exhilarating chaos and the beautiful carnage; for the years that made me a better person, a braver musician, and a bolder explorer of this wild life…"

No doubt he really loved it there. I hope whatever comes next for him inspires the same kind of passionate appreciation for life!

Of course, I’m also quite pleased I raised a child who still knows how and when to use a semi-colon :)

Very nice post from your son, kmcmom. And in addition to being able to use a semi-colon, he also knows how to express thanks and have an appreciation for life… That is always good !

The Sonics here have a happy hour from 2-4pm with half price drinks. Probably done everywhere but not sure? The cherry limeades are good. I had a cherry slush the last time I stopped there (which isn’t often-but will stop once in a while if we are near there when it’s happy hour).

Hmmm – closest Sonic to me here in RI is 50+ miles away. Oh well – I don’t need the calories. Honestly, I’m convinced our scale is broken; no matter what I do the reading NEVER goes below a certain number, but easily and quickly goes above it. (And said number is 10+ more pounds than I’d like to weigh!)

Our dinner party Sunday night was a success. After everyone left, H said something to the effect of, “Well, that was pretty easy …” I just stopped loading the dishwasher and stared at him – yeah, he got the message and finally added, “Well, of course you did all the work.” Seriously! I cleaned the entire house top to bottom, did all the cooking, including the grilling, dealt with a puppy who got totally crazed by the onslaught of new people, and he says something like that??? So not cool.

Road trip? come to the beach!!! It’s finally warm and sunny here.

CBB - I definitely don’t need the calories but that never stops me. Hence probably why you can add a 0 to your number and that is what I should lose – doubtful that it will ever happen though!

We will be celebrating our 30 th too.I thought last septemeber was our celebration, but my H suprised me with a 5 day trip to Bermuda last night.
the girls will be home this weekend. D1 has her HS reunion. crazy.

Congrats DTE. These days any couple surviving for 30 years together is something to be celebrated!

kmc, lovely thoughts well-expressed by mcson.

DTE, congrats on your 30th.

I’m on a perpetual roadtrip, I think. Back in Frankfurt, where I had paella for dinner.

We are celebrating our 30th anniversary this August and I’m taking ShawWife and ShawKids to Croatia and the Czech Republic.

ShawSon has moved back home for the summer before heading out to California (though he will be taking a few camping and other trips while he is here).

Cute story. A friend of ShawSon’s is a PhD math student at an HYP who was an undergrad at another Ivy. He is a sweet, reasonably decent-looking kid with the social judgment of a math PhD student. He is at home for early part of the summer before going back to school. He meets a young woman he’d like to impress when she asks him what he is doing. Instead of saying I went to Ivy1 for college and HYP for my PhD, he says, “I’m doing a little research and living with my parents.” I suspect she high-tailed it away to someone more promising.

I am also celebrating our 30th anniversary next week. Last year we had discussed taking a big trip, but H’s employment woes interfered.

shawbridge, I love the failed pick-up line!

I’m on day 2 of a recommitment to healthy eating/exercise, so no Sonic for me, sadly. Our Sonics have happy hour from 2-4, also half-price drinks before 11 am, and after 8 pm shakes are half off. At least the cherry limeade does come in a diet version! The Route 44 size only has 25 calories vs 460 for the regular version!

Congrats on the two 30 year annivs. H and I will celebrate 25 this year. I remember how old I thought my parents were when they celebrated their 25th…and they were only 45 and 46!

Remember the weasel who broke up with younger D by text while we were on spring break? Well he’s back, kinda sorta. He moved back home to east Texas and D wants to drive there (2+ hour round trip) to see him at the end of this week. I have said no and no and no and no. I have no idea whether D will be speaking to me on Graduation day (Thursday).

Hex upon the weasel, Missy.

If you count my marriage to mch, plus my first marriage, plus the additional years where I was technically still married but legally separated from someone who was being a PITA about a divorce…I still haven’t been married 30 years :)

So I am in awe of those of you reaching this milestone (and with the same person ;)! So happiest of anniversaries!

Happy Anniversary to all!
kmc- your S is indeed a good writer and what a lovely note.
MP- stand your ground against the weasel.
