“But the fact she invited me meant I was going.” Yep, I get that. I’d have done the same.
Both my parents, who are 86 and live about 5 miles from us, are sick now with that nasty flu. My dad has special/additional medical needs, so mom is the primary caregiver (and may I say she is a saint). Today she said she just couldn’t do it, so I went over to shop, make soup, help with computer woes, and that sort of thing. D1 even logged onto my mom’s computer remotely and helped fix a FB account that got hacked.
Made me wonder what the elderly (and others) without nearby family or willing friends or neighbors do when the going gets tough like that.
Good to hear from everyone!
RM - I’m speechless!
Zetesis - sorry to hear about your mom and dad and happy to hear you can help.
Shaw - I have no advice for you but was thinking that a part-time job for Shaw D may be easier to get than a full-time one. (Cheaper in that no benefits will be subsidized.) Although…the setting might not be ideal for her goals.
H and I just binge watched Mozart in the Jungle. I can’t recommend it enough. Some of the best TV I have ever seen.
If you have Amazon prime, it’s free. It is absolutely not as sexy or daring as the advertisements for it suggest…just a really fun story.
Good morning!
Moda, your jamboree sounds like fun. Its been years since I’ve jammed around, and its something I miss! Happy trails on your wander
Z - I wonder a lot about this too, as someone who may resemble that remark one day…and someone currently on chauffeur duty for mch, who’s in a boot cast at the moment. Kind of astonishing how something like that plays into a busy schedule! And I have employees to lean on…
Shaw, the applicant-tracking-system-friendly resume format is something with a summary up top, then a list of professional experience/accomplishments.
So in Shaw d’s case, a summary of strengths, experience, a mention of “seeking part time” and then a bullet list of attributes, followed by specific relevant experience (whether employed, as coop, volunteer etc., using active descriptors of the transferrable talent) would likely serve her best.
Woody, I should check out that program. I seem to be getting cranky about the quality of entertainment these day…my armchair critic is a tad fussy, I am told
Eg. I know that Selma received many positive reviews and that there’s a bit of musing that its been shut out of the academy awards. The real life story is poignant and beautiful, and the topic is timely. Yet I left the theater incredibly ticked that they didn’t do a better job telling it, acting it, editing it, or directing it…or even scoring it. What a wasted opportunity. The pace was just so uneven and the editing in spots so misguided that I left feeling like the positive reviews were political and had nothing to do with the craft of filmmaking. It makes me madder when this happens to a story that’s important, I suppose. Perhaps my expectations were unfair – I may not hold fluff to the same standard.
Good Morning. It is absolutely beautiful here in Florida. Really enjoy seeing my folks. Z your parents are fortunate to have you nearby. I wish I lived closer to mine. Thankfully they have a lot of friends and my brother and nephew are about 45 minutes away.
Disappointed to hear that about Selma, it’s on my list to see.
I am wondering if there is a resume that is standard for the profession. I think sometimes they like it in a certain formatI have had to submit a CV in certain situations.
I hope you parents get well soon.
going to Fla in march. just for the sunshine. and to see my mom.
Good morning from my last day in Oregon! Heading south to southern California later this morning for a company-wide meeting.
I had a lovely time yesterday with oregon101 and her H. Saw the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, including Multnomah Falls and Hood River. This part of the country is so beautiful, and the weather was fantastic. At times with the clouds/fog it looked otherworldly, like special effects created for a movie.
I am afraid I am not too critical/analytical when it comes to most movies. I liked Selma but to be honest I didn’t think about it too much. I may have been reacting to the story/events.
Re: resumes for shawD: I know my D’s college career area had resources about software screening and what key words to include. I don’t know if there’s anything publicly available that’s helpful, but here’s a link to their area about resumes: http://www.wellesley.edu/cws/career/resumes
At the university where I worked, we didn’t screen by computer, but HR did review resumes and cover letters to look if the job’s “required” bullet points were touched upon… So if a specific job posting required X, Y and Z, you needed to make sure your cover letter and/or resume stated you had X, Y and Z.
Too bad you can’t come here for the afternoon, RM. Temp is 62 with brilliant blue skies. (62 and really sunny is quite warm. H is out on a bike ride in a t-shirt. (Well, and pants. )
D has strep; called me after visiting urgent care this morning. Said she could hardly swallow an Aleve this morning, and a bunch of others have had it in her office. The quick test was positive, so she’s starting on antibiotics. So, since Dec. 1st she’s had: a cold, the flu – despite having had a flu shot, and now strep. And she’s due to drive up here this next weekend before heading off to work in NYC the following week. Yuck. Nothing like packing up an apartment when you’re sick.
Wow, arabrab, sending your d the mojo. My friend who just returned from The Gambia this month was terribly sick last week…nope, not Ebola, malaria, or dysentery…but a wicked case of Strep!
Fallgirl, don’t let my cranky review of Selma stop you from seeing it…its a beautiful story and so far I’m the only person on the planet who seems to have had issues with the pacing/execution mcson pointed out that he really wants to see it now because if I was that detailed in my critique it usually means it had super-strong parts that caused my engagement and disappointment where it fell short That sounds funny, but I think he’s onto something. I tend to take bad movies at face value. The good ones tend to attract my analysis
Really nice night last night - mcson had the new gf over for a family dinner. Thoroughly enjoyable conversation and shenanigans.
And since I’ve spent the last three years getting used to the notion that I would not likely have this kind of local, casual, enjoyable scenario in my life if mcson went to SF with his former gf, I felt doubly blessed.
Woody and everyone else in the storm - please take care and stay safe. I know a lot of us also have kiddos in the blizzard area, too.
Kmc - sounds like things are turning out well for your S.
Yes, everybody in the path of this blizzard, stay safe! Hope none of you lose power.
We are in the third week of dealing with having contractors in the house doing repairs on our water leak into the first floor. Nice guys but I’ll be glad when they are out of here. We also have leaks under the house that were discovered (the original 92 year old pipes) so that is an unexpected hassle and expense that the plumber will be working on this week as well. I give those of you that do a lot of remodeling credit. Lots of dust, numerous people in and out of the house. It is not my cup of tea!
Yes, please stay safe in the blizzard. Thinking of all of you. c_q, great timing on that company meeting!
I agree. It’s a good movie, but it could have been fabulous. I felt the same way (although the subject matter was not as significant] about Julie and Julia. Meryl Streep made such a great Julia Child and now the definitive Julia Child biopic starring Meryl Streep will never be made.
Moda, will the blizzard affect your travels?
Zetisis, I hope your parents are feeling better. Arabrab, hope your daughter gets good meds and recovers soon.
Yes, I so wish my mother lived nearby. My sister lives close enough to her to be a huge help, but she is such a needy, disfunctional person herself that she provides only a minor bit of help.
Stay safe all. I know that some of you are in the current path of the blizzard. We’ll see if it stays that way or goes out to sea. Always a chance.
Saw the grandson this weekend for a few hours. He was awake much of the time which was fun. In the past he has been sleeping much of the time we have been there.
Weekend was good. No real housework, got to see the grandkid, finished a sweater I was knitting for D, started on a cowl for her as well that I’ll probably hold for next Christmas, did some baking which I really enjoy (not that I need the calories just enjoy doing it). I think this doing a bit of housework every morning before heading to work might work after all!
