Cq, if that was a movie I would think it was unrealistic because that many things couldn’t go wrong!
MP- thanks for sharing the engagement story. Very sweet and nice to hear that there is no date conflict.
c_q- wishing you a peaceful and uneventful day!
Thanks, sevmom. Glad you enjoyed the B & B. I’m thinking of suggesting that to H.
D is home this weekend for more wedding planning. H and I went to euchre last night, we were one person short so H called D and recruited her. Most of the group members have grown kids who have no interest in playing, but both of our kids love it.
FallGirl, The B & B is down the road from The Inn at Little Washington, which is much fancier and much more expensive by comparison. There is the nano-brewery at the B & B and also a whiskey distillery in town that you can tour (Copper Fox Distillery). We are not really into whiskey but it was interesting to check out. And SNP is very nearby, antiques places, shopping, etc.
sevmom-I think that might be the same place that some friends of our here have recommended!
Cool,FallGirl. Hope you have fun if you do go! There are , of course, wineries and breweries in the general area as well. The town itself is very small, really only one nice restaurant (across the street) but you could always head up the road to The Inn at Little Washington for dinner if you really want to splurge! Another couple staying there and the innkeepers had previously had dinner there and said it was wonderful but very expensive. We’re too cheap to spend that kind of money on dinner!
c_q – Some days are like that, even in Australia. (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day)
I hope the next time is a charm.
MP – It sounds like a lovely proposal. I suspect his fiancee knows his social connections pretty well, and will hopefully adapt accordingly. And congratulations on finishing your airline assignment. Will it be very strange to go back to your firm?
That sounds like a beautiful area, sevmom. I’m adding it to the places we need to visit list.
There are still runners passing by from the Ironman race that started at 6am this morning. I cannot imagine.
Cool engagement story, missy. Congrats!
CQ, on days like that I suspect a greater power is testing me to see if I break
kudos for not breaking!
Arabrab, I’ll get to be an iron man shut in in a few weeks…their endurance is amazing to me!
Gf is more or less settled in to her new place and mcson is off at a six a.m. shoot at a clients an hour away. Mch is still in bed. I think this is the most quiet time I’ve had all weekend, even though its Monday
@arabrab , If you do ever head to that area, consider tacking on the Charlottesville area as well (only about an hour away). Lots of historical stuff, wineries, breweries, etc.
Happy Monday morning everyone! We had a fun, relaxing weekend with D and her BF. Lots of beach time.
Engagement story sounds lovely, mp. IMO, keeping things a little lower key is all good. Glad the dates don’t conflict. Let the planning begin!
c_q – What a series of escapades! Only in NY!! It would irritate me no end to have all the required documents, per the website, and then find out additional items are needed. Grrrrrrr!!!
Workmen are here now replacing the glass in a large slider in the guest room. One of the lawn service guys (either the mower or the weed whacker) kicked up a large stone back in early June that shattered the entire outside panel. It’s safety glass, so even though it shattered, it held together within the frame, if that makes sense. A new panel had to be special ordered, etc., etc. Fortunately the landscape company didn’t give us any grief; they said just give them the receipt for the replacement work. It’s always something …
Wow, it IS always something. Thank goodness for safety glass.
A few months ago I went to the DMV to try to get the name on my driver’s license to match the name on my passport. (Not successful.) Anyway, during the half hour I stood in line just to get a number, so many people were turned away for lack of documentation and most said something about the requirement not being on the web site.
Son had jury duty today and was chosen for a one day civil trial. Because he wants to be a history/government teacher, he actually wanted to be chosen, so I’m happy for him.
Back to the law firm. Sort of seems like I never left. Feeling a bit disoriented, though.
I hope you survived your first day back, MP.
I had to go through the whole car registration thing when D coudn’t take her car to Manhattan, and I did my very good deed by telling the guy next to me in the waiting room who was getting his truck from Texas smog tested that he also needed a VIN verification and proof of insurance before they would register the car here. I liked Arizona’s system: lots of private offices that handle all the car registration & title stuff for a small extra fee. SO worth it.
A very sweet engagement story, mp!
Returning to the office was very much like returning after vacation…you’re sorry it’s over but life goes on. I do have lots of paperwork to sort out (opening files, etc. etc. etc.) I was quite the popular person yesterday, with everyone who passed by stopping to say hello. Within another day or so I will return to non-entity status and will be able to get more work done.
I laugh to myself every time I think of Son serving on a jury. It was just a low dollar personal injury case, 6 person jury. He was chosen foreman. (Him to group: Who should be the foreman? Group: How about you?) He said he was quite the stickler for following the rules. If you know anyone with Asperger’s, just imagine them on a jury…following the rules precisely, not bowing to peer pressure to get the decision over quickly…it’s really just hysterical to think of the other jurors thinking “Who IS this person?” Fortunately for everyone, just a half day trial…but I can see the idea being a very funny short story.
Oh, no! I have lost my mental toughness. Back here two days and my head is splitting. I probably should have meditated but I took Motrin instead.
Hope you re-adjust soon, mp. Did your S enjoy jury duty?
Last night H caught a second mouse here at the beach. (The first one was right before we went to Family Camp.) I’m OK with bugs, but not critters – so I am not a happy camper about this. And this is a brand new house!!! Our Wheaten was perplexed by the first mouse, but was trying to catch this second one. (Wheatens were originally bred in Ireland to hunt farm vermin, among other tasks.) H has found several places that need “plugging” where they might be coming in. Have I said how much I don’t like critters in my house?
This morning a high-speed line squall came roaring through around 6:30. VERY high wind and rain. It was all over in about 20 minutes, but we lost a tree in the back corner of the yard. Fortunately it didn’t hit anything when it came down. We also lost power, but we had a generator put in when we built this house, so we’re good. About 45 minutes after the storm I left to play golf and saw lots of trees and branches down. It was a beautiful sunny day on the course, so I was surprised when I came back home around 3:00 to find the rest of our area still has no power.
Yup, it’s always something!
CBB, beach living is supposed to be relaxing!!! Mother Nature didn’t get the memo I guess.
CBB, I can’t handle critters either. MP, hope things are settling in.
Last night I joined my friends “back home” for a book club meeting via FaceTime. It was lots of fun. On Monday, I’m planning to see my former bff I last saw18 years ago, when I travel to her neck of the woods for work. I had just moved when D was 4 months old, and we met at a playgroup for infants and hit it off. She had a little boy D’s age, and then we were expecting our second children around the same time.
You’ll be happy to know we’ve since accomplished 2 of the 3 tasks from our ill-fated expedition a week ago. Still awaiting paperwork on the cars so we can get them registered.
TGIF! Hope everyone has a good weekend.
I couldn’t get onto CC all day yesterday. Withdrawal!
Son is moving out of his apartment tomorrow and he and Fiance are moving into an apartment in the same complex. I guess I envisioned light to no involvement on my part. However, Fiance’s parents will be there, so this will be a time to work together, discuss plans, etc. I think it’s supposed to be 106 degrees tomorrow.
Last evening I went to a baby shower for a lovely associate who is married to another woman. Ten years ago, this would have been unheard of (at least in conservative old law firm.) And do you know what it was like? Of course - like every other baby shower. This is one reason why I don’t like the idea of retiring. I feel like unless you make a lot of effort, you aren’t exposed to as many new ideas, circumstances, etc.
missypie…So thrilled that you shared the engagement story! Sounds so very nice to have the family involved. Congratulations!
Getting ready to leave for a family Montana vacation. H is thrilled! Fly fishing, horseback riding, ATV rides and hiking in Glacier. May have to change to hike in Yellowstone if the wildfires continue in Glacier. Very different type of vacation for us as the girls have always wanted to go to the beach. Hope it will be relaxing!
We just had the best trip. After a few days in Colorado and a little hiking, I met ShawWife in Calgary and we had four days of hiking at Lake O’Hara in Yoho National Park (https://www.google.com/search?q=most+beautiful+place+in+the+canadian+rockies&espv=2&biw=1596&bih=778&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0CD0QsARqFQoTCNvZo-2vl8cCFQzTgAodOOIMSA#tbm=isch&q=lake+o%27hara). According to http://www.philarmitage.net/canadian_rockies_hikes.php, “The Lake O’Hara region of Yoho National Park is often cited as being the most beautiful single spot in the Canadian Rockies,” which is a pretty high bar. Even though we were going on a pretty moderate trail, the first day, I thought I was going to die and each day I got stronger.
Then we stayed in Canmore and I started thinking of buying a place there to rent out during the winter and live during the summer. We used to go a couple of times a year there when the kids were younger and I was on the board of a Calgary oil and gas company. We’d go for two weeks in the winter and drop the kids into ski school. Then we’d go in the summer for hiking. I’m not sure it is a good enough place for ShawWife. I’d like her to get claimed by Canada as the best artist in Alberta or Western Canada (I actually don’t know what the competition is, but I’m pretty sure she’d be up there and Canadians either climb the artistic ladder via the old boy network or make it in the US at which point Canada claims and takes credit for its native children).
Plus, we visited with ShawWife’s many relatives in Calgary. Life is good.
Have a 9 AM Saturday call before my bike ride and the next day yoga or cycling, dinner with a Calgary friend who is visiting our neighborhood, and then I fly off to Europe for work.
