I’m working away on my friend’s houseboat in Sausalito. Sunny (a little warm – hot in the sun). Nice view of Mt. Taml, water and lots of houseboats. ShawWife met the offending dog and she’s allergic. She’s trying to see whether she can still use the studio and if not, whether others are available. She feels very healthy in the air here and loves the breeze.
Windows are clean! They arrived 6 minutes late so no biggie. Charged me $100 more than last November which I caught after paying them, I called and we are spitting the difference. We have 46 windows of varying sizes plus glass deck sides to wash. Never again will I build or buy a house where the windows are so very hard to reach. I am worried that they would drop me for challenging the $ but hopefully not. I tipped all 4 and fed them juice pops (which they loved).
It was 92 as they were finishing–much of it in the sun on the longest ladder anyone woudl use.
I better go on Yelp and give them 5 stars!
Sorry about the dog, Shaw. I would love to be in Sausalito right now! Especially on a house boat.
^me too!
I used to tease mcson that a house boat might be the only semi-affordable housing option were he to move to SF…but the morning commute by sea kayak might be a pita
Cold snap here this a.m., slight bummer as I like to squeeze out however many fall swim days I can…we close cold in Oct. and open cold in April to avoid having a swamp cleanup but since i heat the water, I’m usually still swimming through Sept. – no point turning the heater off when he temps are due to get back up to 80 on Monday, but its kinda stupid watching the fog roll off the 88-degree pool this morning
It would be good “paint the house weather” today but I have the writers AND sweatlodge so no go on that front either!
I’ve just realized that by the time I finish actually painting the exterior of the house, it may be time to paint the barn/poolhouse again
I see an endless cycle here…
Though cheap, this may have been a stupid way to do it
First year I did the barn/poolhouse as the previous owners said due to sun it needed it every year. (They clearly weren’t using the good stuff…mine has now lasted 4 years in intense sun.)
The second year, I did the whole back, eg anything facing the pool area. The 3rd year I did the front exterior of new studio.
This year I did the front of the main house.
That leaves the two sides, which need it to protect the batten, but are much less satisfying because you don’t really see the sides often
Since we’ve now proven that I get sick of painting the house after a major section each year, perhaps once I’ve finished a complete circuit it may be time to consider getting one of the 25-year epoxy jobs done on the whole thing.
Of course, then I won’t know what to do with myself when restless! Hi ho
Back in the Cities after lovely weather at the lake. Not much new with me. I can feel summer slipping away and that makes me sad. For some reason I am dreading the cold this year.
After a brief reprieve my insomnia is back. sigh…
Quiet here as well. We are looking forward to going to New Hampshire in Oct.
Christening gown is finished!!! That is a highlight as the last couple of weeks on it were just a drain to me. I was OVER IT!
On the news front though DIL is pregnant again! Yup another one on the way. She thinks she is due in April. Hasn’t been to the Dr. yet but later this week so should find something out than. First one will be 1 year old in Jan. Nothing like having them close together! Better her than me - 3 years difference between my two and that was okay. Not sure that I would like 2 in diapers at once though
Started working on a set of curtains for D now that the gown is done. Seems so easy to sew after the last project.
Good Monday Morning to all! Lovely, sunny day here at the beach – a tad cool, which is just fine after the horrendous heat and humidity last week. It’s VERY quiet here during the week, now that Labor Day has come and gone. It’s still fairly busy on the weekends, though. Last week H had a Board Meeting in CA; while he was gone I went to my hometown in MA. My family is donating an electronic carillon system to our hometown church in memory of my mother. After much research and listening to various installations, we met with a rep from the company to finalize the details. It should all be installed sometime next month. I know my mother would have enjoyed listening to it.
S is definitely going to S. Korea for 1 year. He needs to report there by October 20, but is flying out of Boston Oct. 1 so he can get in some travel in Europe. He and a buddy are hoping to hit part of Octoberfest in Munich and then go to Vienna. And there was a vague reference to a female friend in Copenhagen – someone he met while over there last summer. He’s also got a money-making plan in the works – the AF will pay to ship his car to Korea, but he’s not sending the car he’s had. That car will be stored at H’s brother’s. Instead, S bought a 1975 Corvette. He’s done lots of research and talked to others in the AF who have done this – the Koreans are hot for American “muscle cars,” and will pay top dollar. So, S is having the Corvette shipped, with plans to sell it for a profit once he gets there. He figures the worst case is he has it shipped back after a year and sells it here.
Last week S called and talked to H for an hour – a new world record! He’s got lots of things to sort out, but definitely seems to be thinking about/planning his future. If he stays in the AF a little longer than the minimum 4 years, the GI Bill will kick in and pay for at least 60% of an advanced degree. He’s talking about an MBA, perhaps in the Boston area. Plus, he may stay on in the AF Reserves, which builds his pension. H is thrilled that S is asking for advice; I’m thrilled that S seems to have his act together – although I’ll still worry about him!
c_q: Glad to hear to car is finally registered! Hard to imagine all the documentation NY requires for what shouldn’t be such a complicated thing.
Glad that your are thrilled with how your son is doing. My older son and a friend went to Munich and Oktoberfest a couple of years ago-they had a blast. They also went to Vienna and Prague. If your son and his friend decide not to go to Copenhagen (which I love), they might want to consider adding on Prague instead. Hope he has a good time in Europe before he heads to Korea.
Very good news on CBBBSon.
We took ShawSon and new GF out to dinner. Tiny person with big personality – as ShawSon said, “She has an opinion about everything.” Bright and not a pushover at all. Definitely seriously organized. We’ll see how that plays out, but she is a very nice young woman and ShawSon appears very happy.
ShawWife decided to take the studio in Sausalito so we will now have to find a houseboat. We toured one that the owners want to rent for longer than our desired stay. Huge, but a bit dark and moldy unlike the others we’ve been in. The MBR had some appliances that seemed to be set up for BDSM (not sure, but hard to imagine other uses). Interesting. [The male of the couple was in fact someone who didn’t listen at all]. Other than a night in NY, I have three weeks at home.
Went to Rosh Hashanah services this AM. Happy New Year to any who celebrate. May your years be healthy, sweet and fulfilling.
RochesterMom, congrats! My sons are 15 months apart. It is doable – pick two of three: sleep, dealing with kids, clean house. I had two in cloth diapers – I wound up on steroids, cotton gloves with cream and all kinds of ointments because I was changing diapers so much. I also quit wearing contacts at that point – didn’t want to risk an eye infection. I ultimately switched to disposables to keep my sanity. I had two in diapers until S1 was 3.5.
I was lucky I had two good sleepers. S2 was colicky, though. DH was the only one who could calm him down – S2 would smell my milk and get all worked up into a frenzy. S1 learned to walk the week before S2 was born. It was hectic, crazy and at times frustrating – but it was not nearly as bad as people warned me about. I had a lot of fun!
Shawbridge (and everyone else who celebrates), Shana Tova to you and your families.
RM, Congratulations on the new grandchild! Mine were 3 years and a few months apart. They are still close even though they were not born all that close together . But I would imagine siblings born really close together could end up being really close!
And Happy New Year to those of you that celebrate!
Great news CBB!
Congrats, RM. Counting Down, I now have quite a vivid image of your early child-reading days
I’m not worthy…
Shawbridge…how are shawwife allergies on the moldy s&m boat? I’m guessing its not a pick…here’s hoping you find something that suits!
kmc, yup. Allergies make it a non-starter. So, we’ll have to find another. We’ve been on several that aren’t moldy and were told that the salt makes it hard for mold to start (but obviously not impossible). Ours are 3 years and 3 months apart and are now close though for many years they didn’t understand each other.
RM, how lovely to be expecting another grandchild!
Last week I attended a conference (in older D’s city), then spent the weekend with D. Saw her tiny bedroom in her small apartment. At the end of this week, we drive furniture up, which will be a brutal trip. Her new neighborhood is nice…a surprising number of folks with young children. We hit the boutiques on her street and I have a financial hangover from all the clothes I bought for D…I am SUCH an easy mark.
This will be the third week in a row that I will be in the office only 3 days. Too much to do, but that’s still better than too little.
Shana Tova!
As you may recall, H sings in a temple choir, so he sang at 4 services between Sunday evening and Monday. We are wedging the furniture driving trip between holiday services.
So tired of this insomnia.
2:07 my time–not tired at all. Just did laundry. Could cook for 12 right now. Legal drugs is all I can do to go to sleep.
Not even tired most days but the getting to sleep has always been my bugaboo–since early age 4.
I can’t do laundry here or I would wake up H. Hope you get some sleep!
Speaking of waking up H, he found an old dhurrie rug in the attic, that we are now bring up to D. I was up at 4 am working on it with the carpet steamer!
I manage to go to sleep fine. It’s staying asleep. I’m up at least once in the night. Typically early and then 2 hours before I’m going to get up. The early one is usually about 2 hours after I have gone to bed and I go right back to sleep. The one 2 hours before I need to get up I typically just drift in and out of sleep until it’s time. Weekends though I don’t seem to do that. Must be that I’m concerned that I get up in time.
Not being able to sleep though is the pits.
Not sure that I would do housework or clean a rug. I’m more apt to knit or read.
I usually don’t have trouble staying asleep but if I do, I work or read.
I have done a lot of reading in the middle of the night.
CBB- glad things are working out for your S.
Congrats on the new grandchild RM!
Said good bye to S at the airport today. I keep telling myself “it’s a great opportunity” and “it’s really not that far away”.
He was more than ready to leave, bored with all of his friends back at school and just anxious to get over there.
