Saw my knee surgeon today for my popped ACL and alas, he doesn’t want to operate as I have already had so much arthritis from past injuries/surgeries. He doesn’t think operating will help that much. Given that he is a top sports doc (team orthopedist for one of Boston’s sports teams, for example), the fact that he doesn’t recommend surgery is pretty dispositive, I would think. So, more PT and more exercise. That I can handle. But, he said I can’t do what I did this summer again – five full days of aggressive hiking in a row in the Canadian Rockies or equivalent. Have to take breaks. I wonder if this should cause me to rethink my plan to buy a house in the Rockies. I can still see them and light hikes are probably fine as is bicycle riding and snowshoeing.
Thanks, shawbridge. S1 got here okay this afternoon and he and his buddies went to pick up their tuxes. His pants were too short (he was measured in DC and picked it up at the Men’s Wearhouse where we are). Somehow, somebody was off by a couple of inches . Luckily, there was an onsite seamstress. The pants are still slightly shorter than ideal (but still will look okay but there was only so much fabric available ). The alternative was to have something overnighted and have to deal with this again in the morning. He opted to let the seamstress take things out and I think he made the right decision.
So sorry you are having to deal with the issues with your popped ACL.
Happy weekend to all! Hope those of you feeling under the weather are back to normal ASAP. Kudos to RM and to oregonD.
This week has been a happy whirlwind of golf – 18 holes on Tuesday (my partner & I won that day’s competition!), 9 holes Wednesday evening, and 18 holes yesterday. We’re still having amazing weather – although at this point we really do need rain.
I’m also starting the “what do I pack” process for our trip to Spain. H has determined that we’ll only do carry-on this time, even though we never have previously for trips of this length. I’m not an over-packer by any means, but I’ll need to be extra organized/coordinated. First up – comfortable walking shoes!
How long is your Spain trip? We did carry-on only for our 2 week France/Germany trip in May. It was doable and made it a lot easier. I started with my shoes - need my feet comfortable for walking!.
Saw Oregon101 last night! I made it here before my luggage, but thankfully it was on the next flight and I only had to wait an hour for it. The airline gave me a food voucher while I waited, which was handy since I hadn’t been able to eat since my breakfast at 4:30 am, which was over 12 hours earlier. I am able to sleep on planes thankfully.
It was fun to see c_q in HER element with the LAS (Lahore American School) 50th! reunion. This group was insanely excited to reunited. Most had been in Pakistan for 3-5 years. It was the pivatal point in their childhood.
Very understandable.
Evidently, as we entertained the class of 1967 for dinner , it was noted that they were missing the first evening and my (very humbly said–as you never know if a dinner will be great or just ok) dinner became the talk of everyone. People kept approaching me to say that they heard about my dinner–it was fun and quite the surprise. I do not think that H will EVER again tell me that I am doing too much or being too perfect. He was/is quite the proud guy.
Much as I imagine your wife entertains Shaw.
It is fun. And not stressful unless I feel not appreciated.
Will have dinner with c_q Monday night. She was polite but did bow out of Indian food. We will be going Italian. (she does not know this yet .
The reunion has been fun. Only one other attendee from my class; there is definitely more representation from the students who were in HS while they attended the school.
Italian sounds great. I loved the Indian food last night. I also loved the Indian food I had Thursday with the class I taught in Alabama. I’ve had it a lot recently!
Glad dinner was a smashing success, Oregon! Too cool that you guys get to hang out.
Speaking of food, congrats, RM, on the program.
Sorry about your ACL Shaw, but glad you have an honest surgeon Doc is running a Lyme test to be safe. The rash I had was honestly more like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever but that would make no sense as I wasn’t extreme enough and it faded fast.
Mcson commented that he thinks I have a particularly high pain threshold and that doc is misled on symptoms because I’d told him I’d been still able to work
My real doc quit 3 years ago, and neither mcson nor I have extreme confidence in the office’s remaining diagnostic powers since they “missed” mcson’s pneumonia 2 years ago. (I’d been certain it was pneumonia … Took him back the next day w orange sputum to prove it and low and behold they did an X-ray and confirmed…)
I keep meaning to get a new doc I’m a bit more confident in and this might be the time to do it
Slept a lot yesterday, then a quick trip to the Irish music festival, lagged after a few hours but at least I wasn’t bored out of my head. The problem is I get weak and dizzy so just about anything I normally do to entertain myself feels like too much, but not sick enough to just lie about all the time
Glad the dinner went over well Oregon. Hopefully your H is more appreciative of you now! Glad you and cq could meet up.
Went to the culinary class this weekend – what fun! Second time H and I have been but first time with friends. Last time we took the kids. Both times we enjoyed ourselves.
I had my meniscus out after tearing if really bad. I have severe arthritis in both knees and they were very cautious about going in but the pain was just too much with out it. It’s been a couple of years now and I do feel that I made the right move. Much better to sleep at night!
Finished D’s curtains on Sat. and took them over to hang. They look good. She wanted “room darkening” so I lined them with a room darkening lining. Well she is now thinking that she needs to go buy some lighting for the room other than the overhead. Now the room is “really dark” in her words.
Sorry about all of the knee pain! My hairstylist of the last decade changed careeers because of her knee arthritis. I could not believe how swollen they would become. I pulled something in near my shin during our last trip (10 miles on cobbletone will do that ) and it hurts after a few miles everytime we walk or hike now. It seems to be something that is not going to go away.
kmc, how long until you get your test results?
Thanks for the nice comments about the dinner.
It was interesting when all these old folks sat at my dinner table .
For me, the reunion pointed out again how different H’s childhood was than mine. Most of our friends also had opportunities as children. It does leave me feeling that I am on the outside looking in.
No wonder our two traveled and had exposure to many things (even when S did not want such things).
Oh, the good news is that S has a job. Their dream job for him at this stage of their lives. He will work fror home for a gaming company and has a salary and commission. Their new (move in next week) married student housing apartment is across the yard from them (can see from their front door). So he will be available if G’Son is ill. This is such a relief for DIL.
The bad news is that a GF had an MRI looking for a possible brain tumor. I happened to call her on a whim the night before and she talked about backing out. I gave her a talking to and she went through
with it after all. Just happened that we had dinner with another friend the week before who lost her husband of a brain tumor. Also H’s friend who was staying with us lost his wife 4 years ago to a brain tumor. This GF said she has vertigo and cannot walk in a straight line. So I spent some time walking on the lines of the wood floor. Did fine even after my liquids treats
:))
Lots of news! I won’t try to remember everything, but congrats to your son on his job, Oregon.
Left at 3 am on Thursday to drive furniture to older D, worked on her apartment Friday and Saturday and drove home yesterday (15 1/2 hours). I barely feel human, but I didn’t schedule any calls or meetings for today, knowing I’d be dragging.
D’s bedroom looks great. It’s tiny, but at least fits real furniture (unlike her even tinier bedroom in her college apartment). She shares it with one other girl (one of the college roommate.) D starts a new job at one of the Big 4 in two weeks. She had two offers and can’t believe she turned down the other one (as she’s been trying to work there for years.) But she knows this will likely be the only opportunity she will have to work for one of the Big 4 (she’s not an accountant). The pay is good and they will work her hard, but I think she’ll like it and do well.
H and I did get to go to the Cubs-Cardinals game on Friday afternoon. The super wonderful thing is that we were able to walk to D’s apartment from there. What a luxury…to not be stuck in a parking lot for an hour after a game!
Don’t know when doc gets around to it, but I could see results online. No Lyme, but elevated sed rate, which doesn’t tell us much at the moment. Zillion reasons it could be elevated, most benign being something viral
Kudos on both Oregon s and missy d’s jobs!
Mcson finally bit the bullet and decided to move in with folks sharing a house downtown, which means I get the pool house back for guests, stained glass studio for hubby, and puttering He’s not done a good job of saving money, but maybe the “real world” will help on that front a bit. As he put it, he doesn’t want to feel like a teenager, but notes that in living here, if he doesn’t HAVE to do something, he doesn’t tend to do it. It will also be nice for him socially. The owner, a casual friend of his, lives in the house so could be flexible re terms (no lease.)
He and gf plan to move in next summer after her lease is up ( in 10 mos). I think its a good move for him to live with others a while first. His only prior shared living experience was former gf.
As much as I enjoy their company, I will enjoy the truly empty nest again, especially given that they’re still in town. Gradual weaning seem to suit me in this case
To those who observe Yom Kippur, have an easy fast. It would probably be a very good idea if everyone observed at least one day of repentance, atonement and self reflection a year.
Hi All –
Had a great visit with D in NYC and out in the Hamptons. The beach was every bit as nice as i remembered, though we did get drowned in rain one day.
MP – a very true sentiment.
KMC – congrats on the empty nest!
Oregon – I hope the issue with your gf is something a lot simpler. Lots.
I opened my front door only to feel something furry brush by my leg and head for the living room. i was afraid it was mama raccoon, and she is hard to dislodge. Instead, it was the handyman’s new puppy. Cute as a button, but why he thinks a 4 month old puppy is safe to wander without a leash is beyond me. She did the cute puppy thing, and then buried her nose in the basil and went to sleep. I told him that I’d always heard it was ok to keep unsolicited gifts. He didn’t seem to believe me.
Have been busy taking care of annual health exams the past few days. It got me thinking of annual household costs so I started calling service providers. Got my Verizon bill down $100 a month, cable down $90 and had electric company haul out an old refrigerator with their recycle program which will give us a $35 rebate and yearly savings. This has been fun! Now on to reducing trash/recycling costs!
missy…what I have found is you really need to call every year to see if there are new packages. Our cable bill was ridiculously high and we were ready to switch to Dish. I couldn’t believe we were able to get almost $100 off per month. It took just a 5 minute call.
I finally got all the 2014 info to the tax guy. I’ve never waited so long to finish our taxes. Feels good to be done! (Until he tells me we need to write a big check or something.)
