Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Way back when H and I were first dating, I remember telling him my mother NEVER packed for my father when he traveled for business/went on vacation. (I have no idea why this topic came up, but it did.) Somehow H managed to turn this around, and for years he would tell me I should pack for him because, after all, my mother always packed for my father! What??? Needless to say, I have NEVER packed for H. OTOH, his packing doesn’t include all the prep work like washing, drying, & folding clothes, restocking needed supplies, making arrangements for the dog, dealing with the mail & paper, paying any bills that are due while we’re away, sending our itinerary to family members, etc., etc.

S called us yesterday morning to say he was at Heathrow, getting ready to get on the plane to Abu Dhabi. He bought an older model iPhone in Prague (which he loved) to replace the one that was stolen. He was scheduled for a pretty long layover in Abu Dhabi on his way to Seoul and mentioned he wanted to go see some of the sights. He was chatting away with us when H all of a sudden said, “Wait – do you need a visa there?” S had no idea and clearly hadn’t even thought about it. H looked it up online while S was on the phone and the answer is, yes, you do. H also read that they have some sort of transit visa, good for 96 hours, that you can get at the airport. I told S I didn’t want to be hearing about him on the news; the guy who walked out of the airport in Abi Dhabi and wasn’t allowed back in because he didn’t have the right paperwork … ANYWAY, he texted this morning to say he was on the plane for South Korea. He went into Abu Dhabi and went to the top of The Landmark skyscraper (2nd tallest), walked through the World Trade Center shopping area and also went to Ferrari World.

All positive vibes to Sevmom’s sister and oregon’s SIL.

Adding my positive thoughts for Sevmom’s sister and Oregon’s SIL.

Glad your son got on the flight to South Korea, CBB. We also used the, “No making the news, OK?” line with d.

Looking forward to hearing the details of the wedding from FallGirl.

Glad your S made that work and that he is on his way, CBB.

I have never packed for H. For some reason it sounded like an odd concept to me after all he had to pack his own stuff before we were married. When we go on car trips he always packs a cooler full of food and soft drinks which is what his parents always did. I do the things like board the dog, ask a neighbor to pick up our mail/papers, etc. I’m good with that.

Working today and tomorrow and then the fun begins! Two friends of mine had kids get married this past weekend (not to each other  ) we were not invited to either wedding and didn’t expect to be, but it’s been fun looking at the pictures on FB.

Sending Fallgirl great wedding mojo

Oregon, re :

No wine before its time

Must admit it has never occurred to me to pack for H, or even do his laundry, for that matter  One of the advantages of marrying someone who was a bachelor for 20 years is that expectations around that kind of stuff are approximately nil! People think its funny after 16 years that a) I don’t do his laundry and b) that we both take our cars separately to most functions given our differences in social proclivities or lack thereof  Personlly, I find those aspects of indepence quite to my liking!

I don’t choose H’s clothes for trips, but I do fold and put them in the suitcase. Only, okay, I do veto. One summer we went to Disneyworld. The next summer we went to Rome, Florence and Venice. H got out exactly the same clothes for Rome as he got out for Disney. I couldn’t let that happen. So my undoing is partly my own fault.

Saturday we went to the State Fair with all three kids plus Fiance. Very nice to have everyone together.

Night before last I dreamed I was nursing an infant. Last night I dreamed I was pregnant. (And yes, I was my current age and no one thought it was very unusual.) Wonder what that all means? Related to having all the kids together for a day?

According to the results of my internet search, dreaming you are pregnant means you are craving to be creative, and need a new project/goal. Or it means you are stressed and you don’t need a new commitment. To dream you are nursing symbolizes tenderness, nurturing, and motherly love. Or not.

We had a nice, very quick trip to see S this weekend. Left Friday morning, got back Saturday night. They were inaugurating the new college president, and S’s choir was performing. His gf was also there visiting during her fall break. Got to see gorgeous fall foliage. Won’t get to go to family weekend later in the month due to in-laws visiting us that weekend, so we decided to go when the leaves were prettiest.

I bet it was gorgeous there c_q. I do miss that school.

I have also dreamed I was pregnant and it was no big deal but people around me felt sorry for me.
I haven’t been feeling well thought it was allergy but maybe its a virus. I am on the new meds but haven’t seen a result yet to see if I actually tolerate it. . I haven’t felt like myself for a while. I had an abnormal hearing test. I went because I couldn’t hear the teacher but my hearing is normal, or my age. I asked why the kids seemed to hear the soft spoken teacher and she said it was because they have super hearing because they are young. OUCH! anyway the abnormal hearing level in one sound in one ear buys me a test and if that is abnormal I will have aN MRI. I wish they would just skip to the MRI. I feel that familiar dread and it is hard. I too want to hear how the wedding went. so much going on.D2 just got back from Victoria Falls said it was beautiful. animals roaming all around. She will be sad to be back in decemeber and I know it has helped her stretch her wings. I don’t pack for my H but used to pack for everyone else. I still have to take care of things or it doesn’t get done. We went to see Joe Walsh, and I had worked so no time to fool around getting there , he didn’t plan and the phone wasn’t giving us the right directions and I almost exploded. I plan everything and sometimes I am over that.
RM I wish I had one tenth of you energy. my house is a pit and I am over that too.

Feel better soon, DTE. You are doing so much.

Best of luck on the testing DTE.

I consulted with ShawWife a couple of months Shi before I bought tickets to a concert of a folk/bluesy singer named Crystal Bowersox. She said she was free. It will be two days from now. Yesterday she discovered that a big meeting she had scheduled for today was moved to two days from now, but that was done several months ago. She had agreed to the change but had neglected to update her calendar. Ugh.

I’m having calendar battles myself, Shawbridge, so I’ll add my sympathy. Time zones are going to be the death of me. If I’m back east, and make an appointment with a client for a meeting after I get home, Apple’s calendar seems to do some very, very funky things. It has messed me up twice now.

Same here, arabrab. A couple of weeks ago I ended up double-booking myself when I was in Florida for the wedding. Seems like my calendar knew I was in EST time for some purposes and not others. (Or it could be user error.)

I’m working with some folks with London, so I’ve gotten used to waking up to messages from them. Soon I may be working with folks in Australia, which should be a challenge. (I have a partner whose son lives in Australia, so he should be able to tell me the sweet spots for phone calls.)

I received the Hamilton Broadway cast album on Friday. Son and I are obsessed.

This would happen to me so I either copy my EA on everything relating to my schedule or more frequently let her schedule. That way, she catches me before most screwups occur.

MP, I have calls almost every morning with Europe and had one last night with Kuala Lumpur. It was 8 PM here and 8 AM there. I used to have a couple of Australian clients. Sydney/Melbourne are maybe one hour further off so it should be a little easier – your calls will be at dinnertime in Dallas to reach them at the start of the work day in Sydney/Melbourne. Today I’m just talking with Brazil and the US (and emailing with UK, Germany, someplace else I think in Europe).

DH is on the phone with London, Paris, Basel, Sydney, Tokyo and Singapore on conference calls all the time. Typical conference call with folks across both ponds is around 6-7 am here, which catches everyone at a not-too-terrible hour.

I hope you are feeling better soon, dte.

With S in London, I do a lot of early AM texting and sometimes even hear back :).

mp- Hamilton is on my must see list. We are hoping to get tickets through D’s college alum group, they have once or twice had midweek tickets for sale (they go fast!).

Crystal Bowersox was on American idol.

You are correct, DTE. She is really a talented singer. ShawD went with me. It was out in the burbs and the audience was surprisingly old. ShawD thought that there might have been a bus from an independent living facility.

After stressing for several days, she got a 100 on this week’s test.

Congrats to ShawD!

Thinking of FallGirl, isn’t this her D’s Wedding Day?

Bryce and Zion are beautiful! The weather did NOT cooperate. Needed long underwear at Bryce :-S one afternoon.
It rained off and on every single day (4 days). We did manage to catch some views in between but it was not safe to hike the canyon floor nor to do the mule/horse ride.
Zion is so very different! H loved Zion and it did finally stop raining and was somewhat sunny the last day and he did Angels Landing and is super proud. I read by the pool in the sun and was thrilled to do so.
We did a few baby hikes, one where we were soaked as H insisted it would not rain…and the rain pants were in the car because, well, it was not suppose to rain 8-| Luckily it was not cold at Zion.

The highlite was Kodachrome where we were able to do a box canyon hike, short but interesting.

Found some great food and I am on the search for a poblano goat stuffed pepper, dipped in panko and deep fried (yet so dry tht I thought it was baked), nestled in a light green sauce. It was at least 10 inches long!

mp, can you help? How did they clean the seeds and stuff it and not have the filling ooze out?

Hathaway’s Famous Goat Cheese Chili Relleno

Roasted Anahiem chili stuffed with jack & goat cheese, covered in panko & fried, served with roasted tomatillo green chili sauce, cucumber salsa, & fresca. Add beef tenderloin or prawns $3.00

This is it! Amazing!

I love rellenos but never make them myself. Goat cheese stuffed…oh, my!

I’m having one of those blue, “what does life mean” days. My favorite drill team mom passed away - breast cancer that traveled to her brain. (She’s the mom I had the get together for last spring, even though my house was too small for the anticipated crowd, but it poured down rain so few people came.) Recurring line from Hamilton; “Death doesn’t discriminate/between the sinners and the saints/it just takes and it takes and it takes…” A kind, beautiful, fun woman passes in her mid-50s, and my mother is almost blind and would welcome the chance to meet my dad on the other side.
