Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Been enjoying a visit from my in-laws. Lots of sight-seeing, went to Book of Mormon on Saturday. They’re leaving later this morning. Glad I’m home this week (not traveling for work) - I need to recover from 4 weeks straight on the road, plus our busy last few days!

Glad we could all cheer on the Royals together in the World Series! Perfect ending for the visit.

Not loving The Rosie Project…seems like a novelization of The Big Bang Theory (Son hates that show.) But I’m only about a third of the way through it. Maybe I’ll like it in the end.

Thanks for your comments about my mom. She basically doesn’t like “other people”, is very uncomfortable around “strangers”…my sister’s theory is that it’s because she’s the child of an alcoholic. She is rather damaged by her childhood. She’s also very opinionated - she can’t keep her opinions to herself, even if it means alienating a well-meaning person. Mom is trying to talk my sister into moving in with her. I can understand that my sister doesn’t want to do that. But there has to be something between dropping by once a week and moving in.

Just wanted to confess that between Saturday and Sunday I gained 1.5 pounds solely in Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups. I separated them from the other Halloween candy we were giving out and I can’t even count how many I ate.

Ditto. Reese’s and Almond Joys.

Not sure what H did with the leftover candy and I’m not asking. I know what will happen if I find it.

I used to love Reese’s but they are not on my no starch, no sugar diet. Incidentally, we had over for dinner the other night one of the world’s leading experts on the science of nutrition. He said when he started practicing cardiology, he realized that most of the causes of heart problems were dietary but that 90% of what doctors told patients had no scientific basis. So, he went and added PhD in epidemiology to his MD and has proceeded to work on the scientific basis for dietary recommendations. He says now 50% of what doctors tell patients about diets has a scientific basis. Anyway, he says that my diet has a sound scientific basis – in a US diet, most of fat comes from starch. He is OK with some sugar in products like ice cream that have some food value and some complex carbohydrates. It was a bit daunting to cook dinner for him, but ShawWife cooked her normal excellent dinner, which was very healthy.

I’ve just flown from London, where it is easy to eat on my diet, to Germany, where it is harder as bread and potatoes are the best part of the cuisine and everything has gloppy sauces. The on to Lisbon. Any suggestions for what to do on a weekend in Lisbon?

After my two day binge, I left the Milk Duds out (not tempting in the least) and put the rest in the garage freezer.

Good early morning, all! H and I are back from 2 weeks in Spain and clearly I haven’t adjusted time zones since it’s way early here and I’m wide awake! Oh well, at least I’m not facing 2 days of Trustee meetings like H – although I do need to join him tonight for a dinner.

Spain was GREAT on all accounts! We were entirely travel compatible with our friends (first trip we’ve done with them) and had such a good time. I could easily be converted to the whole Tapas Bar way of eating and socializing! Tuesday night H and I flew from Barcelona to London, stayed overnight near Heathrow and then flew to Boston yesterday. (Our friends live in CO, so took other flights.) We were on the flight to London with a Male Chorus who erupted into song several times; flying to Boston we were several rows behind a non-stop screaming baby and his toddler sister who occasionally joined in.

Glad the wedding went well, FallGirl. The photos are lovely.

Good to hear you had good vacations/trips, oregon and RM.

shaw – my Book Club here in Cambridge read The Rosie Project for our September meeting. I loved it! It was funny and poignant, and well written. I have The Rosie Effect on my Kindle but haven’t gotten to it yet.

kmc – we have slate tiles in our entryway at the beach. They have a rough finish, as opposed to smooth. We used the same slate (with a smooth, matte finish) as a table top in the breakfast nook. We love it in both places! Apparently there are different types of slate, some harder than others. Ours is very hard/durable – it comes from a vein running through Vermont and over the border into NY.

Oh, S made it to South Korea. As is typical with him, he hasn’t answered all my questions (I’ve sent emails) but apparently all is well. He said they’re in 24 hour operations for 10 days for a base exercise and he hasn’t been outside for days … At the moment he’s doing construction management (similar to what he was doing in NJ) and will then switch to programs and planning.

Time to make the coffee …

Here you go, Shaw

We’ll all meet you in Lisbon to aid and abet

Thanks, CBB, also for the slate tip. Sounds like you had a great trip! Welcome back!

Welcome back CBB. I was up and at the gym at 5:10 this morning – just my typical day.

I actually found it difficult to eat in England. Hard to get vegetables (other than mushy peas) and salads seemed to be nonexistent.

I’m on board for a meet up in Lisbon.

Welcome back, CBB. I’ve never been to Lisbon, but would love to join you all!

To tell you how my day is going, I’m am eating Taco Bell for lunch. Three (!) crunchy tacos. For some reason, that seems like comfort food.

I don’t know anything about slate either. I am not on the face book group so did not see the photos. but am glad it was a wonderful wedding. I have no time to reach recreationally until December. am playing around with getting a DNP. What is a Hamilton weekend?
had the balance test so fall no MRI recommendations.
We are helping my newly divorced brother buy a home from looking at the websites I see some updates in my home in the future.
See ShawD every week lovely girl.
I hope everyone is well. I am driving my friend to radiation in the ma so am getting up early cant believe its almost TG.
Oh CBB glad you had fun .
D2 had her phone stolen in Capetown, D1 and BF are going there soon. I am ready for D1 to be home too stressful for me. So CBB I get it.

Just got back home from a non-profit client’s fundraiser. Long week!

The second Rosie book seems contrived. I’ve lost interest. Alas. I really enjoyed the first one.

It is sunny and warm in Lisbon. Signed up for a walking tour and a wine-tasting tour, both of which were canceled as I was the only one signing up. Who knew?

Lisbon sounds like fun…I love just walking around cities. Sorry the tour was canceled.

I liked the first Rosie Project book a lot; and didn’t finish the second. We had a very dear friend with a PhD in CS who basically went through life much like Don. I wish he’d met his Rosie. He was dangerous as a driver, however. He knew to the foot how much braking space his Honda Accord required, and usually didn’t put on the brakes until absolutely required. As a result, he must have been rear-ended a good dozen times.

Went for a free walking tour at 3 PM. Everyone tipped the guide 10 euros. We took him out to dinner. Most of the folks were half my age, including a kid who went to my son’s college three years ahead of him. Very pleasant. Beautiful city.

Wow, DTE. How long would a DNP take?

We really like the walking tours. I’d rather do that to get my bearings in a new city than a bus tour.
