Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Sending out best wishes for your D at her interview today, c_q.

Best of luck to your D cq! My D1 has just completed her third interview for a new company. She has mixed feelings about whether it is a good fit for her so we shall see what happens.

oregon and dte…hope the health issues get taken care of quickly. Sending good thoughts and prayers.

Congrats to CBB D! How very exciting!

Back from Palm Desert and miss the wonderful weather. Cool and rainy here in MN.

3rd interview, 4th interview…I’m sure they’ll both do great, but I sometimes wonder if I would have ever received a job offer in the current environment.

Tornado sirens went off at around 3:30 am. The only damage was disturbed sleep.

Best of luck with the 4th interview.

Went for a walk with ShawWife at one of our local conservation areas this AM before starting work. Lovely.

ShawSon working intensely. He has started the latest venture – he said he is working 30 hours a week on top of business school classes. Plus he’s still pushing forward the research on distributed algorithms.

Congratulations to your D, CBB! Good luck to your D’s, cq and NM.

Sounds like your son is working very hard, shaw! Hope he’s finding some time to relax.

S1 went back to work yesterday after a good trip to Europe with friends. S2 is planning a cross country road trip with 3 friends in a couple of weeks. They may come to our town . That would be fun if they do.

I hope the 4th interview turns into an actual offer for your daughter, c_q. And best of luck to your daughter as she thinks through her options, NM.

MP – when is Pieson’s wedding?

I heard there was a blizzard in Denver. And, several school districts are closed, I25 has recently reopened, lots of flights have been canceled. Meanwhile: light rain and sunshine here. Go figure. Deep truth to the saying that if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes or go five miles. Or, in this case, 10 miles.

OOOHH! Congrats to CBB’s D. He sounds like a great guy!
And best of luck to northminn’s D and cq’s D! cq, Is your D in Chicago?? I seem to remember that. Brutal work conditions…good lord!

Good luck to your D1, NM.
Shaw it sounds like your S has your energy level!

Yes, woody, D is in Chicago. The second interview included a work-related test. The third interview was with the director/higher ups in the organization. Today’s interview was with HR to discuss salary/benefits. She’s expecting she’ll receive an offer tomorrow. She learned today that her current salary is slightly above the highest end of this position’s range. Not sure if they’ll meet her current salary. So I guess if she gets an offer, that will be part of the decision, especially if it’s lower, and if so, how much lower. Or she might be able to use it as a bargaining point in her current position. She really likes her current employer, she just can’t continue these hours.

Hoping they can agree on a salary, c_q.

Sendin the job mojo to both the D’s

Have an early, vegetarian “thanksgiving” this weekend to meet the parents of mcson’s gf…they’re driving in from Northern Mn, so I hope the weather’s good for them. Its a good 15 hours I think from where they are.

Vegetarian isnt my wheelhouse, but my gnocchi experiment/practice last weekend got rave reviews even though it was a total PITA in terms of prep, IMHO . So I’m going with handmade gnocchi with roasted root veggies and chestnut-apple-stuffed acorn sqaush. There’s a lot that could go wrong here  i’d better make sure I lay off the afternoon G-Ts until I get dinner on the table  Hi ho.

My “grand-kitty” is getting adorably huge. I love that they still bring him up for visits!

Don’t think I mentioned it previously but I’m also doing a night class these days with an employee we’re apprenticing in a bit of code. Our evil plan is to take a bit of pressure off the developers by equipping ourselves to help write the CSS-themes that hook into our framework, as this is often the project bottleneck.

On another level, I’m calling it my “retirement” plan…should mch actually retire in 7 years, I will need to either scale back in scope of services or pay a stranger far more than I care to replace him  There’s a verticle model that should work if our team can multitask more and specialize less.

The only piece missing for me has been actual code, which I’ve found historically disinteresting in practice as I’m more oriented to big picture than minute. But expanding my personal capability to a production level would give me a bit more freedom in terms of semi-retirement options

Kmc, you are impressive! It hurts my brain to try to learn new work-related things. Here you are learning learning learning and planning for your professional future. Amazing! And then there’s the cooking. Just so impressed.

I’m getting ready to get on a plane to spend 5 days with my mother. It is terrible that I’m dreading this terribly, but I’m dreading this terribly. (Will my kids get to the point where they dread spending time with me?) The whole purpose of the trip is to help her adapt to vision related issues but I know she will strongly resist every change. I wonder if I will be like that years from now?

c-q, I bet they will beat her current salary but only by a little.

Fallgirl, ShawSon called earlier today and sounded tired. He said he is trying to get by on 4 hours of sleep a night while his GF is out of town on a business trip. It is not enough and he is planning to sleep for Thanksgiving vacation. He is coming Wednesday AM – he was staying around because his GF’s parents were going to come but now they are not. I told him he is free to invite her to stay with us, but it will probably be expensive to get tickets at the last minute.

He is very excited though about a non-profit app idea that he has. He is going to hold a 4 day hackathon this weekend to get it done before Thanksgiving. If it happens, I will let you know.

Hi all! Sending positive mojo to all those in need.

D and I have been texting/emailing about very initial wedding plans – she says she gets the impression H isn’t all that receptive to hearing about it. Initially, I’m fine with this arrangement, especially since she and I needed to sort out a few things. When I asked her about possible locations, she mentioned they had been thinking about either her fiancee’s family’s lake house in VT, or the family camp in NH we’ve gone to for 20+ years. I was actually upset she didn’t include RI on the list – and I know H would have been REALLY upset. Long story short – after several back and forths, she said she just couldn’t think of any place near our beach house for a wedding reception. I sent her links to 3 possible great locations, so we’ve cleared that up. (One place is a vineyard that, when I visited a year ago, the first thing I said was, “What a great place for a wedding reception!”) I’m pretty sure I’ll end up being the go-between/mediator with H. IMO he needs to get with the program!!

CBB, I’m just not up to being a MOB … Glad I’m going Groom as a warm up.

Watching all of you navigate the wedding issues. You no doubt remember when we gave S and DIL a reception at our house for 70, 3 days before Christmas. I was a mess–did not even know if our house could manage but it went smoothly. We made it 2 hours but should have made it 3.

Anyway, mp, you are getting loads of talk regarding alcohol or not…

I do not think that I will enjoy the whole wedding thing with D. I cannot see spending $$ on a big party but know that she will want one. But she will be given a budget from us and then their decision.

We are not a very “romantic” family in that a big wedding is not important to H and myself.

CBB a girl at work had a wedding at your lake location and the pictures were beautiful

Sendin Missy the mom mojo
You are a loving and loyal daughter is all I can say, and she’s lucky to have you!
But I don’t think you have to worry about “becoming your mother” in your ways. Your own experience now will inform your conduct then

Love the wedding talk. S and DIL had a large wedding and reception and I was involved with lots of the decisions which I’m very glad that I was included but I love to entertain and love the idea of a big party. We put in some funds, here parents did as well and so did S and DIL so we all had stake in it.

Picked up my new sewing machine last night. Oh my! I can’t wait to play with it but probably won’t happen until at least Sunday unfortunately. At first I’m sure I will be lost. Lots and lots of new features on this one. Guess 20+ years things change! If you are wondering what did she buy? Here is a link http://www.pfaff.com/en-US/Machines/creative-sensation-pro I’m sure that it will stun many. H went with me last night and even he was a bit impressed as they walked me through some of the basics.

Have fun with the new sewing machine, RM.

I have to admit that I enjoyed planning D’s wedding. It helped a lot that we had a great wedding planner, D is organized and very easygoing and there was minimal drama.

Sending you good vibes MP.
