Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Moda! Awesome to hear from you and glad you’re back.
Mcson’s been working with our company as a programmer/designer and doing great work. He and his SF gf broke up (her move) and as such he never moved there…

He met someone else almost right away – an art student from MN, and she’s a good fit for him…we also happen to love her, and for the moment, she’s local, which also brings me great joy. They’re moving in together in June. Mcson has been living in a house with friends since last October, so we did eventually get our empty nest back

While he maintains that he still intends to move to another city one day, not to count on him to take over the business, etc., we shall see what unfolds. I don’t want him to have any regrets, but I’d also love it if he stayed, as mch is much more relaxed about taking vacas etc. with mcson at the helm as our clients love him and he does a great job troubleshooting when were out of pocket.

Mch is even doing crazy leisurely/hobbyish things such as concocting a plan to build an observatory in the attic of the pool house. That’s another story for another day, but an example of a bit of a sea change around here. Last month, at his behest, we went on a blues cruise.

So I’m enjoying this era while it lasts and trying to just stay open for what the future might look like. With the age gap between mch and I, I will one day need to assess a coherent exit plan or transition plan as the case may be in terms of the company. We are grooming an apprentice in tandem with mcson, but mcson’s shoes would/will be tough to fill, and said apprentice has a slightly different skill set. The universe has a way of unfolding

Gotta run, but do catch us up too, will you?

Moda glad you are back. I don’t post as much as follow. (MP you are always positive) If I didn’t want to hear the real stuff I would stay on FB.
I am still in school, (ShawD’s) and am a year away hopefully of graduating). Still trying to understand my work culture and failing.
D1 is still in DC and will start law school in the fall. She is living with her SO. and no plans in sight for marriage.
D2 is still in nursing school and will graduate in a year.
We recently took trips to South Africa and Hawaii.
our aging 13 plus year old Golden is in Hospice.
So glad you are back!!!

Hi Moda, so happy to see you are back. Oddly, I was thinking about you last week. Magic!

S is working for a computer company as their social media specialist. He can work from home which makes their life so much easier. DIL is in her first year of Med school and G’Son just turned 4.
D is about to begin her 4th year in Med school and hopes to become a pediatric dermatologist with a special interest in vitiligo.

H continues to work .50 and I am still in my office one day a week with plans to stop this August. I will be 66! so it does seem time. We are planning a trip to Iceland currently–rather late–so it will be determined on finding accommodations as we want to do the Ring Road.

Looking forward to hearing about you and yours.

So great to hear so much good (and growing!) news!! I literally said, “WOW!” out loud when I read Missypie’s S is getting married! Had surely not seen that one on FB! And you are never a downer. As I’ve always said, there are far more interesting stories about taking a less than straight and narrow path in life!

My sister and her family (along with my oldest sister who tagged along solo) all went to Iceland last June and said it was the trip of a lifetime. Considering they are both extremely well traveled and my middle sister lived around the world to boot, that’s really saying something. I received a now absolute favorite Icelandic sweater knit by a farmer’s grandmother in their barn. My sisters met her personally. They really did it all including volcano spelunking AND some thing else where they all had to wear special wetsuits! Truly an adventure. Anyway… They loved it and you will too!

And I seriously cannot believe that Oregons gbaby is 4!! But so very happy to hear the family is still together, which given the statistics in this world is pretty great news all around! I will hit the double-nickels this summer… All of a sudden I feel very unaccomplished in this life. But then I think about my resume…

Oldest D is teaching 3rd English at a French immersion school in SF and has already signed her contract for next year. She has a great deal of support within the school, and they love her, as well they should. But it’s a real change from last year at a public school that was 98% Asian. While you’d think they’d appreciate the diversity, even if it comes in the form of a blonde and blue-eyed Minnesotan… You’d be wrong. I had raised a daughter to look people in the eye when they were speaking to you, but apparently in the Asian culture that was a sign of hubris and disrespect. When she told me her principal called her obstinate, I was pretty incensed. S? Pretty sure I can see it. Younger D? Absolutely, no question. But this one? No flippin way. Honestly, I really felt a sense of cultural prejudice but I settled for the parents of her students being outraged and fighting for her, all the way to the superintendent of SF public schools! But she landed this job almost immediately last spring and while she sometimes misses having her own classroom, the third grade team is truly a great fit for her. It’s higher pay, more vacation, and she is literally a five minute walk door to door!

S ('09) has had a challenging past two years - but what else is new there? He is still with the GF from college, who I adore and pretty sure he does too. And while he didn’t get any offers during his cycle of med schools (albeit he had a top list for sure), the gf was accepted into every single one to which she applied! She also had a perfect MCAT score. S is so completely proud of her! Better still, we all have come to see that it worked out for the best for him too so far. Some time ago, he joined an offshoot venture of his parent company, a start up that works to improve patient experience (and thus create loyalty and trust) and is loving the challenge. He is likely headed to Boston in a few months or maybe SF depending, but the GF is definitely headed to Vanderbilt for the next four this fall. They say a flight is a flight, as long as it’s direct, but we will see. He will be traveling a lot more for business so if nothing else, he’ll have miles to spend. They seem very supportive of one another but I don’t ask all that many questions about specifics.

Our youngest and final is set to graduate in June! To have three college graduates is pretty rewarding since all along their education has been our priority. But it sure will be nice to not pay tuition! Although this youngest one does fancy herself somewhat special when we ask what she is going to be doing following graduation. She is our most independent in personality, but we are still paying the rent and the cell phone bill, and we’d like to get her off our payroll. Little did I know that what I thought was graphic design more or less has evolved into a full blown Art Department major in Digital Media. She has had some wonderful experiences and She took a scholarship to play lacrosse one last season knowing full well she was merely a back up and that suited her just fine.

My sister arrives on Monday with her current junior in HS to visit some schools. Not sure if I want to even experience how amped up the process continues to be, but it will be fun to hang with my sister. She is an organizer extraordinaire and I really could use some help in making decisions on what to even hang on the walls! We bought this cute little cottage and I look forward to doing some fun things while also living a lot more scaled down. I unpack some boxes and wonder what the hell I was thinking!!

Headed to Denver for 10 days to catch two weekends of home games and apparently D2 is putting my crafty side to work in helping her with her capstone project, of which I need more details because it’s not MY capstone project. But I am happy to help with a glue gun or whatever because like some of you know, playing a DI sport that travels over a lot more weekends that are at home is a time commitment to say nothing of work outs and practices. So I will help where I can!

OMG… This is way too long and I’m just posting… Feel free to ignore or glaze over!

Moda – not too long at all! You had a lot to catch us all up on. (Poorly worded sentence right there.)

H and I came back to Cambridge from the beach last night. He got a fair amount of work done on the sailboat, but wants to go back for another couple of days before our big trip. He wasn’t so pleased when I said I would stay here in MA – probably mostly because he’ll have to fend for himself at meal times. I’ll have plenty to do here getting ready for said trip.

D and I have a bridal shower today in southern NH. It’s practically a blizzard out at the moment, so getting there should be fun … Plus I first have to find my way to D’s new condo in South Boston to get her. Thank goodness for GPS – and the fact that it’s a Sunday, so less traffic. Oh, and all along I thought the shower started at 11:30 – but I just checked the invitation again and it starts at 11:00! Good thing I looked.

Moda – there’s a car that parks on the next street over from us here in Cambridge that has a CHQ sticker on the back bumper. Every time I see it, I think of you!!

Hello to All! Back from vacationing in Florida. Had some beautiful days and some stormy days. It was fun catching up with long time friends from Ohio.

Nice to catch up with you Moda! H is helping a friend move some furniture today in a neighborhood I think is close to you, near Salut. Let’s make arrangements for lunch when you return from your visit with your D2! My D1 is also working in that neighborhood.

I hyphenate my name and wish my Ds would have kept their names. The young men involved did talk with H and I but not to ask permission but more to tell us that they loved our Ds and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Both did not have the officiant ask “who gives this woman away” during the wedding ceremony.

Hoping our spring is filled with sun and warmth!

ShawWife and I are actually feeling less connected with our current home/town than we thought. We realized that none of the people we kept in touch with live in our little neighborhood. She keeps in touch with people in the town and people in the metropolitan area, but it is clearer to us that we don’t need this house or this neighborhood. Plus, it snowed this morning. I’m ready to head back to Sausalito.

Welcome back Moda and Happy Birthday to those I missed while I was on vacation!

Trying to play catch up now that I’m back.

Moda I’m also on facebook but the quick catch up… S is married and working as a lawyer. He and DIL bought a nice house about 15 minutes from us. They have one little boy that just turned 1 in Jan and another baby due any day. They didn’t find out if it’s a boy or a girl so I can’t tell you yet.

D has a house about 20 minutes the other way from us. Her’s is a starter home but it’s still nice for her, her fiance, and their 2 dogs. Looks like they will be getting married in Fall of 2017 but still trying to find a venue that they like so the date is open until they find the venue.

H and I are just back from a week in Napa. Good time. Went with friends. Not sure if we will do that again or not - could have just been that the woman that we went with had knee replacement in Jan and she just couldn’t keep up so we did a LOT less than we usually do on vacation. I couldn’t stand too much more of her leg hurt, her head hurt, or her tooth hurt. Just always seemed to be something!

That’s about all that is happening in my life - other than work and nothing really new there.

RM…where did you go in the Napa area? Were you able to get to Alcatraz?

We actually stayed at a lovely B&B on First Street in Napa. We did go out to Alcatraz – just during the day. Trip was “ok”. Friend is a bit of a complainer which I knew before going but I guess when I’m not with her and just see stuff on facebook it’s different.

Moda, nice to see you here. I haven’t posted for a long time – life has gotten busy, and I’ve gotten out of the habit of checking the thread regularly. But I checked tonight, and here you were. Nice to catch up.

D1 decided not to pursue the PhD, took an MS, and is having a hugely successful year in a teacher training program in elementary education; she’s in a 4th grade classroom, loving it and doing terrifically by all accounts; she started teaching two weeks alone today, so that’s a challenge! Her hubby is doing well at Google.

D2 is in her second year in a PhD program in chemistry, has passed the qualifying hurdle to candidacy, just learned that she won an NSF graduate fellowship, continues to do aerial dance and will be performing at the school dance show this weekend, and has a super nice boy friend (from her school). She’ll be serving as a graduate RA next year (great benefits), so she’s happy about that. We get to see her almost weekly, and we’re happy about that!

Congrats Zetesis. I forgot about that. ShawSon’s GF suggested they apply to be RA’s (I think they call them CA’s in a graduate dorm). There were no slots for couples but they were selected as a couple.

Starting to get excited. DIL is due tomorrow. We are awaiting #2. Curious if boy or girl. No labor yet but shouldn’t be long I would think.

Great news about your daughters, Zetesis! Congratulations.

And congratulations on becoming a grandmother again, RM! Hope the labor and delivery go well!

They will have there hands full sevmom with only about 15 months between the first and soon to be second!

Such good updates!

Back from a week in cold and snowy Boston. World Figure Skating Championships were great, but a lot of our other sightseeing Sun/Mon was derailed with the nasty weather. Terrible to have wind and snow combined. Felt like dermabrasion without the spa experience.

Weird observation #1: Why are the Boston Police so much nicer and more polite than officers in NYC or LA? Lovely folks. The TD Garden arena staff were also very nice. And…a nice older lady who saw D having trouble with buying a Charlie card when the machine ate her money marched over, grabbed a T employee and stood there lecturing him on how he needed to help D and make it right! (He was nice, and did.)

Weird observation #2: Hundreds of Japanese visitors and dozens of Japanese videographers and paparazzi swarming around former world champion and Olympic medalist Mao Asada as she attempted to leave the arena. A little scary to watch, and not what I expected. I wonder what her life must be like in Japan?

Great fun with my daughter who lives in NYC and who came up for the weekend.

Long, long journey home after the plane was discovered to have had a bird strike on the leading edge of the wing. 3.5 hours later after numerous inspections, goop and eventually some tape we were put back on the plane and sent on our way. Saving grace #1: a Legal Seafoods in the United terminal at Logan. Saving grace #2: Flight ended up only about half full since those with connections were generally re-routed.

RM, waiting for the news!!!

arabrab, Love Legal Seafoods–saved a horrid trip home a few years ago. Yum to the lobster wrap

km, can you ask your sister how many night they stayed over on the Ring Road? Thanks!

RM, my kids are 15 months apart – it was hectic, but I loved it!

CountingDown - don’t know how you did it. Mine were 3 years apart and that was so easy. Oldest could talk, get me diapers if I needed them and just “entertain” the younger one. I worked full time and there is no way I would have had the energy if they had been closer. Love my DIL but she doesn’t have a lot of energy so this should be interesting.

Still awaiting arrival. So far nothing. She was due yesterday.

Sooooo … a little “off the wall” news. I just had a call to let me know my poem is a winner in the City of Cambridge Sidewalk Poetry contest. Here’s the info: http://www.cambridgema.gov/TheWorks/OurServices/StreetAndSidewalkMaintenance/SidewalkPoetryProgram

My poem is going to be etched in cement and set into a sidewalk somewhere in the city! The woman almost couldn’t believe I don’t write a lot of poetry and that I really did write this on a complete whim, and submitted it on the final day of the contest. Color me stunned!!

Spent the day running around looking for/trying on clothes for our big trip to Asia. (This is an activity that’s always best done when H is away.) I had this bright idea of buying some golf pants and capris since they’re lightweight, easily folded/washed/dryed, etc. Then, once the trip is over, I can wear them for golf! Pants and I don’t get along all that well, though, so it’s always a challenge. I ended up with several possibilities.

@arabrab - glad you enjoyed Boston. That snow on Monday was most unwelcome – fortunately it didn’t last long. The forecast says possibly some more on Sunday, but I certainly hope not.
