Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Ah, DizziMom, I have a class of '11, as well. His search should prove to be very different from his sister’s, so I fear all I learned will be irrelevant. Maybe I should have had more kids?

Hi Dizzimom! Welcome home!
Hopefully we all can be extra resources for you and chintzy!!! ;)

so sorry for both of you and anyone else starting another “round”. Yes, I am happy to be done with the college search. But are we ever done? D takes the GRE tomorrow. I am trying not to think about it. However, I will say that having her move back after 7 years (other than 2 summers) has turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be. She is considerate, has her own life and pays her own way (mostly). AND we know that she really wants to move to her own place, so it is just temporary. Also–has forced H and I to take a trip to Maui in a few weeks for alone time.

:: practices folding herself into suitcase shape ::

Ouch!

Medic, please!!

Owlice, you are so funny! I just laugh every time I read one of your posts. You have such a good and funny outlook on life. You’re making lemonade with every lemon life ever hands you!

Thanks to being such a great member of this board!

Another '11 D here. I have this feeling of we (she) should be doing more, but she’s trying to get her feet under her in her classes. Her drill team coach schedules practices on most of the testing dates and days off of school, so she can’t take the ACT until April and no college visits until school is out…so I guess I’ll just finish my two slices of cake…

Am I going to be the only '12er? DS wouldn’t let me get away with a college discussion right now if my life depended upon it. Smart young man, but not as willing to let Mom help as his sister.

Dizzimom–welcome back and sorry to hear about son’s flu. Hope he’s on the mend quickly.

DD just put up a mysterious “I think I know what I want to do with my life post” on Facebook with NO details!!! Imagine the nerve of that! Immediately a few of her friends asked about it. I’m logging back in there now to see if I can find out what’s up.

FYI–I’m not leaving this thread yet either. Too much left to learn and too much dessert left :)

sabaray, thank you, and right back atcha!

I tried throwing those lemons back at life, but they bounced off and hit me in the head instead! Making lemonade doesn’t give me headaches, so lemonade it is!

AND I can put the peels down my garbage disposal, which makes the kitchen smell great! :)

I think some coffee will go really well with the chocolate cheesecake, but better make it decaf at this hour!

How about a Starbucks tall decaf mocha? (with whip or without?)

I just checked Son’s facebook page, and I think he participated in the music for *chapel *today!!! If anyone remembers my post from move-in weekend, we went to a service in the chapel and it was beyond dull. We told Son to give it one more try and I guess he did.

Don’t worry chintzy - it’s not too late  !

One of my favorite places ever! H & I had been to Maui twice without kids, and had extraordinary weather. D’s senior year in HS we made it the destination for our family vacation during spring break – figures it was the worst rainy stretch HI had seen in 30 years or more. Oh well, still a great trip – just not a lot of time at the beach.

Yikes – I’m packing on the pounds just reading about all the different cheesecakes & desserts!

Another vote to keep this thread alive and well – I’m constantly learning something new.

From NorthMinnesota

Thanks for asking, NM. It looks to me like he got his first reading pdf’ed from the library today, so he can use the screen reader. He got one of his books from audible.com but asked me yesterday to send him a copy of the book so he can mark it as well. Kindle would be great for him as he can listen and highlight although not much is yet on the kindle and the speech to text is not as good as Ghostreader on his Mac. In the meantime, his cousin has found some software so she has been reading book chapters and storing them as mp3 files and emailing them to him. He turned in his first paper. The school is paying classmates as note-takers for his three classes for which notes are useful (his studio art class does not seem to require notes).

He told me last night that he was pretty tired – not sleeping that well. I hope it is not the sleep disorder rearing up again. But, he is playing on the Ultimate Frisbee team and competing in Debate. Hopefully he settles in and sleeps OK once he is getting CDs and pdf’ed readings to which he can listen. I may have to make a trip out there to install some additional software.

He has called me pretty much every day to work out some logistical stuff. Can you send me cleats. Can you order my books cheaper than they are selling them here? Can you email some of my old Moot Court files? Can you send me some of my old drawings? [We’ll have to drive those up].

So, while it is transactional, if I ask how the Debate tournament went or how a teacher is, I get answers. I’m not hearing about people, though I’m sure they exist. He’s going to weekend parties. So far, pretty good, but I hope as things transition to a routine, he sleeps better and is less tired.

chintzy and SJTH, I will be doing it again next year with all different schools as well. Right now I’m doing ACT extended time accommodation forms for ShawbridgeDaughter. I have a lot of expertise in that from doing it with my son. But, she’s a really different kid, so we’ll be doing different stuff for her.

Oh, strawberry cheesecake and a nice cup of coffee sounds great on this dreary day. Thank you so much!

:: hands eddieodessa a clean fork and spoon ::

Okay, fess up…how many have been able to keep the snacks virtual this afternoon? I just broke down and got a cup of hot chocolate.

missypie, I have to confess that often, at least some of the goodies about which I write are inspired by real-life yummies…

shawbridge…as I try to find a new path in life and redirect some of my volunteer time your son and his desire to learn has made me think about new areas that I may want to pursue. I LOVE to read and I am intriqued about his voice recordings. Hope to do some more research in that area!

I confess!!! I did go out to lunch with a friend today!!! But no dessert…:(
