Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Awww geek_mom, know the feeling. Something to shout about most definitely

Tomorrow is #theoryson’s last day home.

I aksed him is he was anxious to get back and he answered “meh”

Course now I worry it is becasue he has been hanging with this girl the whole time and he will be distracted when he gets back - I am such a putz
blame it on my fever

My worst fears have not been realized. He got good grades, his minor episode with drinking ended with him not caring to drink any longer (for now) and has not had a drink since said episode. He gets on with his roommates. Just WHAT do I have to worry about, yet I do

blame it on my fever

Oh, honey. Worrying is in the job description. It’s what we DO, fever or no. I hope that your fever goes away soon and you have Sunday open for some serious quality time with the tub and maybe a nice glass of wine.

And I’ll bet that once he gets back there, the day-to-day college life will soon crowd out most thoughts of the girl. Until Thanksgiving or Christmas, at least. :)

Just sent D off to take the ACT. She was supposed to do on-line prep but didn’t. The idea was to use it as a baseline before she takes it “for real” in April. However, with no prep I’m worried that her score will be so low that both of us will be devistated.

Missypie, it’s OK. She’ll be able to show some improvement this way.

While admittedly son is a fairly good test taker, his ACT “baseline” was better than any of us thought it would be. The good news about ACT is that you have to pick the set of scores to send. There is no score choice to opt in or out of. So… it really doesn’t matter how she does on this test if the plan is to retake. I think it’s a good exercise because some kids just do way better on one standardized test over the other (Act vs Sat)

TM - I am so sorry you are still feverish. Your son’s experience with alcohol proves my point that just about everyone makes that mistake at least once of not knowing their limits and about the girl… look at it this way, if they went to school together, they’d REALLY be distracted. This way it’s temporary. And yes. It seems that worrying is what we do best. The trick is to not act like it. (Personally I find this very hard indeed).

missypie–agree w/Modadunn–my son took ACT w/no prep & did pretty well. Maybe that one is better than the ACT for the ‘no prep’ kids?

TS also did ACT with no prep (he opted not to do the writing of course) and scored a 34 composite - he did better on the Reading Comp on the ACT (a perfect score) than the math! (SAT 800) But his calculator ran out of batteries and he had to leave one answer blank on the ACT) So… I don’t know, but he felt it was easier than the SAT by a long shot - but he never prepped for the SAT either and perhaps if he had he would have done even better.

The kid is such a good tester though, they do NOT make him nervous, and he never prepares. I think it is a gift - one I never had! But it might come back to bite him in college if he figures he never needs to prepare for his tests

:: puts out a plate of chocolate chip cookies… extra large chocolate chip cookies ::

Ice cream is in the freezer; the cookies are extra big so you can make ice cream sandwiches with them if you’d like.

:: puts out a platter of French bread slices with chevre, sundried tomatoes, and basil leaves on them, lighted toasted ::

:: opens wines ::

:: brews tea ::

:: adds a platter of assorted cheeses, crackers, breads, and fruits to the table ::

:: puts petit fours and mini eclairs out ::

:: slices pumpkin bread ::

Something for everyone! Enjoy!

eddieodessa, I’m on the Maryland side of DC.

Loved the “Bran” headline, and the poor Asian test-takers!! Both lines made me lol!

Best get-well wishes for all sick students, parental units, and friends of same.

Sent S a $10 iTunes gift card via email a bit ago, this so he could get Undercover, as mentioned … here? On another thread? Somewhere on CC, anyway! Thought he should have that for his iPod Touch; thanks for the recommendation, whoever posted about it!

Work is very busy (and I’ll be leaving shortly to work the rest of the afternoon/evening). The time is good, anyway; my nest is empty and only the cats get upset about the late hours, and they are pacified by feeding! Went to divorce court on Tuesday, and my petition for divorce was denied. I’m over it now, but I was not a happy camper on Tuesday.

Raining cats and dogs here, finally; had been forecast to start much earlier. Sent S a note last night asking whether it was raining there, and haven’t heard back.

Oh! Evidence of Dawning Maturity (henceforth EDM): Spawn got himself up early on Thursday for an orthodontist appointment, had his cell phone with him (so was able to call me when he realized he didn’t know where the place was), and scheduled the appointment to pick up the new retainers. Oh, frabjous day!

Owlice, sorry about the Divorce hearing…these things are NEVER easy, are they? I’m having an ice cream sandwich, my favorite kind–sans weight watchers points!!

I LOVE “EDM.” !!! My son’s “EDM” was getting himself up and checked in at the airport today, then getting back to school and figuring out where to catch the airport shuttle. We had a nice visit–I think he was busy enough to NOT get completely bored, and he’ll be back home for Thanksgiving with his Bro, so I can stand it! THAT bro turned 21 today, and gave his Mom a smile via text message this morning:

Mom: Happy Birthday! How can you be 21 and yet I’m still 28?
Son1: It’s a miracle of science.

xoxo

Thanks for the treat Owlice!

Back from a few days off with H at the Bellhurst Castle. Not as impressive as I had hoped. No attention to detail with cleaning - meaning that a sticky substance was on a counter and was still there for several days. I even put a kleenex on it thinking they would clean it but they left the kleenex. Somewhat bizarre.

Hiking was nice however and dinner at the Castle was fantastic.

FIL went into the hospital soon after we got there and it’s been going down hill so we checked out a day early and came home. H just wasn’t in the mood to vacation – can’t say that I blame him.

Oh well perhaps we can do something this winter or in the spring.

D had fall break and stayed on campus. We haven’t heard from her so things must be okay.

Mmmm. Ice cream sandwiches.

Sorry about the divorce, Owlice.

Fang Jr. seems unfazed by the cast on his right hand. When I’ve chatted him on Gmail, he can type perfectly well. He can’t cut meat, but he reports the meat in his dining hall is overdone and not tasty anyway.

I usually work as a proctor at SAT and ACT testings. Today we had a kid come up to where we had the room assignments posted. “How do I find my room?” “The rooms are assigned by name” “My name’s Billy, so…” “Uh, no, it’s by LAST name”

OK everyone - can you all remind me once again how our wonderful off-spring can be so darn intelligent on one hand, yet so darn…huh…“not-intelligent” on the other? Case in point:

My son texts me the other day that he is at a minute-clinic getting what he says is a “swine shot.” Fine, I left the decision up to him. He then texts me to ask if he’s ever had a flu shot before. I text him “no” and then ask if he’s getting the “H1N1” shot or the regular seasonal flu shot. His answer: “not a clue”

Wow - to me that is sort of mind boggling. I personally don’t believe in letting people stick needles in my body unless I know exactly what it is I’m getting. I figure some cute girl on campus (with a car no doubt) asked him to come with her to get a shot. Sounded like a good idea, so off he went. Might as well just get the shot while he was there, right? I guess he didn’t feel the need to know exactly what it was he was getting!!!

He’s all about “handling things himself” these days, so I’m not butting in. I’m about 99% sure what he actually got was the seasonal flu shot, just because I haven’t really heard anywhere that the swine flu shot is actually available where he is. Hopefully the same kind young lady who took him for this initial shot will be sure he gets the H1N1 if he wants it when available. Oh well, in retrospect I guess my husband sort of operates the same way - he depends on a kind, not-so-young lady (me) to direct him on things like this (sorry to all the men out there reading this…I’m only speaking for my own family here!) I guess deep down inside I wish he’d maybe pay a little more attention to stuff like this.

China: I’m not sure where your S goes to school but D had H1N1 nasal and shots at Bates a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if it was because of the number of cases of H1N1 flu that they had that they received the vaccine or not.

D got the nasal and then called to make sure that that was okay with her allergies. Uhmm - did you ask? Well no. I didn’t have any idea but she seems okay. Kids - there are times that they make you wonder.

Son’s school had nasal option for H1N1, didn’t get it. But the injection for the same was no available as yet.

Sorry about the divorce, Owlice – very stressful!

^^^ definitely trying to do that, also!!

: grants Owlice magical divorce by decree of cybergoddess who rules all in cyberland
: grants Owlice abundance irrespective of RW(real world) legalese and shenanigans.
: grants Owlice lifetime supply of spawn retainers : )

Thanks for the cyber-buffet! And yes, I had mentioned Undercover. Glad it’s useful.
Cheers,
K

Owlice, how can they *not *grant your divorce? Have you time traveled to 1952? Hugs!

I sent Son a Halloween care package - candy, highlighters, spiced cider mix…at Dollartree I found a little glow-stick sword. He’ll love that. Wonder if he ever checks for mail at all.

My friend is not doing well. His oxygen levels have dipped really low. The idea of his not making it is incomprehensible.

Oh Missypie, so sorry. How are YOU doing? This is so awful–you’re a good friend, and I’m praying for you all.

My friend just passed away. It just can’t be. Fantastic husband and father. Brilliant lawyer. Always the wittiest guy in the room. Perfectly healthy 2 1/2 weeks ago. Leaves behind a wife, a D who is just starting his first “real” job, a D in college, a S a senior in high school. It just can’t be.
