Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

thanks #theorymom. I didn’t think of going the “I"m grateful you are okay; please be more careful” route, but it is a very good idea. if and when she responds to my email and H’s 2 phone calls, I will lead with that message. thanks.

my guess is that the fact that she waited several days to tell us is an indication that she scared herself, which is probably a good thing.

modadunn - I asked most of those same questions about the concussion (or lack thereof) on the phone and in my subsequent email. she did say people stayed up with her for several hours, so I guess they kinda knew what they should do. the Thursday party surprised me because she is on the newspaper staff and that is the night they publish the paper, so she is usually up pretty late anyway. and she has class on Friday. oh wait, maybe not partying on a school night is totally outdated  (or maybe my memory of not partying on school nights is…um…not real ;))

sounds like she was honest with you and did all the right things. I’m a novice at this myself!!
We had a squirrel in ur house noticed the poop first, H said a mouse i was like “you kidding me no mouse has a poop that big” had to get someone to take it away, then it happened again got a have a heart trap, then cut the branch that hung over the chimney!!! the noise that thing made when it was being taken away!!! have to get rid of them they can be destructive trying to get out!!!

I’m sitting here working at my computer, and I can see that both daughters are online. We’re not “chatting,” as we are all working – but I find it somehow comforting just to know they are there. Hope that’s not too weird…

No squirrels in the house, but we had one trying to chew his way through the skylight two days ago …

Our county is reporting its 18th and 19th H1N1 related deaths: an 18 year old guy and a 24 year old guy, neither with a pre-existing health condition.

Is it too early to start thinking about summer internships/jobs? My daughter called last night and she told me that her room mate has an internship in Spain lined up. My only advice was to check with her college career center.

Oh,no! Haven’t heard of many new cases around here or at the girls’ schools.

Heading back to see the surgeon today. Knee is about 75% better. I’m hoping he says it is just a matter of time to feel totally better.

D2 registered at 7 this morning. Hope it went well. She planned on registering for the calc class anyway as she can drop it if necessary.

China…not too early! D1 always had hers in place by December.

missypie, that’s scary. H reports a child of a colleague in the hospital on a ventilator, no underlying condition either. scary stuff.

china, no, I don’t think it is too early and I think you gave her the right advice to check with the career center. I asked D if she had applied for her camp job yet, something I’ve always had to remind her to do in the past, and she said, yup, all taken care of, well before the deadline. pretty reassuring to me, especially as the mother-of-the-girl-who-fell-down-the-stairs ;)

NM - hope the knee report is good!

Oh Missy… that sounds horrific! It’s as if there seems to be some reason when there are complications (as long as they don’t apply to your own person) but in this case when there seems to be nothing underlying, it’s so pointless, so sad and completely scary because of the uncertainty. I can handle a bad case of the flu, but one that might for no reason whatsoever kill you? Not so easy sleeping.

There is some good news however in that in the last 7 days there have been less than 20 flu cases (they no longer confirm them as H1N1 or not for some reason) according to son’s school’s website compared to less than two weeks ago when there were more than 200! It would seem the worst is past for them… at least for now. It seemed to spike immediately following fall break and I am sure there will some upswing again post thanksgiving.

PRJ - One other suggestion in addition to the “glad you’re okay” theme for your D (and avoiding the unintended consequences approach): “Thank you for the candor, it means a lot to me to know what’s really going on in your life. Never be afraid to talk to me. You’re making your own decisions now but life is nicer working with a net. I am your net. And to that end, anything you want to talk about – were you scared? Depressed? Embarrassed about all the fuss?..”

That approach is hard at times, but pretty rewarding when you get to hear, as Owlice would put it, EDM – evidence of dawning maturity.

I am so relieved to be done with the teaching-driving thing. Our state requires 6 hours of behind the wheel training by a licensed non-parent instructor and that was a god-send for me as I could ask her to do the stuff I am not good at…(And I think it paid off with my daughter that I took the time to find a woman instructor. We also waited to do some of the professional instruction time until right before the test and that was very useful) There were still the 35 hours of “practice” we had to sign off on–you will make it through but may need a roll of duct tape. My kids hated how I would hiss (still better than screaming I think) in alarming moments… I love the series in Zits on driving with kids–definitely look at that for some stress relief.

We have had to deal with chipmunks occasionally–but still better than a local woman who found a deer in her house! With antlers! It however did not get under the sink.

Wow, the H1N1 flue is scary. Fortunately, my son should get his vaccine tomorrow as he is consider high risk due to his respiratory surgery last winter.

I’ve heard several explanations of why it can be fatal to the healthy, but they sound made up and not based on research.

In announcing the latest flu deaths, the local news cuts to an interview with a health department lady saying this underscores the need to be vaccinated, then the anchor man says that our county ran out of vaccine after two days last week. Hmmm…

This is a quintessential **? (which will probably be 'd out). Nothing like creating a panic. I got an email this morning from the pediatrician saying they had vaccine and would give what they had to 6m-1yr. There was no charge by the govt but they were charging an administration fee of $15 they would bill to insurance. Of course they are. Still no word on the older population.

So, thanks to all you posters out there for the squirrels stories … At 4:30 AM H & I woke up to the sounds of some critter (most likely a squirrel) scratching away in the attic over our BR. H decided he had to have a look, so dragged in the extension ladder to get to the trap door in D’s closet. I kept asking him if he was crazy, envisioning him lifting the door and having the squirrel drop down and start tearing through the house. Fortunately that didn’t happen, and I guess it found its way out. Now I have to go buy a humane trap. More importantly, we need to find out where it got in.

I guess we’re not in an empty nest after all!

At least it wasn’t a skunk!

A friend’s great aunt who lived alone was hospitalized for a few weeks. This was in September in NYC. Friend went to apartment to pick up a few things before aunt’s discharge. Squirrels had invaded the apartment through an open window! Kitchen cabinets open. Boxes of food nibbled through. Food all over the place. Couches, chairs ripped open, stuffing all over the place, closets open, clothes torn to shreds and what seemed to her, about 100 crazed squirrels running all over the place!! Quickly shut the door and brought auntie to her place for recupaeration during the clean-up…

CB – I got a good chuckle out of that one. My h is one of those guys that was SOOO happy he was out of town when our guest literally dropped in. My mom told me that they had some squirrels in their attic for awhile. They had to have screens put over their exhausts from their roof.

I just recovered from a complete panic. Both my sisters had called me on my cell phone. As it turns out…, they called, I didn’t answer. They then proceeded to each butt call me three more times. I literally thought something had happened to my mom!

We had a bat in my office (an open concept place with about 150 desks) three days after Halloween. It was dive-bombing really close to people’s heads and flitting all over. One of my co-workers threw his jacket over it and captured the little guy. Took him outside and released. Another fun day at work.

That was the plotline of an episode of The Office.

I remember when the squirrel came in the kids and I were trapped upstairs in alofted area we called the neighbor boy who opened the slider but neglected to open the screen. so the squirrel crashed into the screen, so we figured we had a brain damaged squirrel running around. It was frantic and we were afraid. then he went back into the wood stove that was attached to the fireplace. so then we knew where he came from. I guess the law here is if they take the squirrel away they will euthanize it and of course it cost like 100.00 dollars so hence the have a heart. BTW never used it since.
That is the worse story where they distroyed the apartment, like a cartoon but not funny
D1 got a concussion playing softball. HER BELL WAS RUNG for a few days. CT was ok.
but I watched her like a hawk the important thing is to not get another injury close to another, I had her not play a few games. She did get an academic scholarship, not one for softball. She has been ok.
