Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Hmm. Son got a year and a half worth of credits from AP classes and community college classes. Yet he still registered with all the other freshmen. Did he forget to ask to register earlier? Does his school not allow students with advanced standing to register earlier? Inquiring minds want to know. Luckily, he ended up with the classes he wanted anyway, and we’re delighted that of his three courses, two are in his particular area of interest in his favorite subject (so yay for small LACs).

Son’s small LAC went by hours and he should have been at the tail end of the sophomores instead of in the middle of the pack of the freshmen.

About calling the school about Troubled Girl: I still wasn’t sure what to do, so I called a suicide hotline to ask for advice. The counselor (who was very nice, but didn’t sound like he had professional training) was reluctant to make a recommendation, but finally said unless I knew she was in imminent danger, I should leave the matter to the girl’s mother, who knows her daughter, and not call the school.

and I thought Fang Jr’s small LAC would go by hours too. Which is why I suspect Fang Jr somewhere didn’t fill out some form or check some box to get himself the advanced standing to register early.

Cardinal Fang, I’d take one more shot at convincing the mother to call the school. You’re in the terrible poistion of having some knowledge but not really being in a good position to help.

Missypie: I WISHED my dining room was big enough but it’s not. When everyone comes and that is typical we put 1/2 of the people in the dining room and 1/2 in the kitchen. Not the greatest but it works. H and I kind of float between the rooms. Since we do serve buffet style everyone sees each other together at every course as they get the next course to eat. I also always allow plenty of time for socializing prior to sitting down so that we can all catch up. We all live close by and have kids about the same age – except for one couple. He was my college advisor when I was in college. He and his family moved into our development 6 months after we did 25 years ago. His kids babysat mine and we have been great friends for a long time. He is the only one that has known me since I was 18!! We all get along great. What is always funny is people start asking me months in advance what day it’s going to be so that they can plan their schedules around it. Also everyone always tries to figure out the menu prior to dinner. Last year one of my neighbors came over to help me unload the groceries from my car. She later explained that she thought if she saw what was in the bags she could figure out what was for dinner. Unfortunately the turkey was already brining in the garage. She walked by it several times and didn’t see it. Too funny!!

I’ll see the mother on Monday and again urge her to call, but I’m not hopeful. So far I’ve done everything I could, including pulling out my cell phone to hand to her, but she is reluctant. The mom thinks the girl would react badly to having the school know about her troubles, which is probably right, but on the other hand if the school knew she was in crisis, at least they could keep an eye on her.

Son’s school goes by hours and they cap AP at 4. Not sure it accounts for advanced standing when it comes to registering, but there was something about picking numbers back in the fall which you reversed come registration for the spring. He told me via text yesterday that he was supposed to register today. Haven’t heard from him today yet, although I asked him to call, but hopefully he got all his classes he was hoping for.

D2 entered as a sophomore due to her AP credits. She was able to register several days before the rest of the freshies. She would have qualified to register early anyway because they allow athletes to register early as they need to leave afternoons open for practice.

the AP and coming in with credits thing really depends on the school.
S’s school will award credit but not standing. Even if he had enough credits for one full year, he would still come in as a freshman unless he actually had earned those credits in a college, then he would have had to come in as a tranfer student.
As it is they accepted his Calc I and II credits as math credits, but not his physics credit (college in HS class). They took the transfer credit, but only as an elective, not a science credit because they said the course (though taken through a college) was not expansive enough to count as one of their science credits. Oh well. I think S plans to take physics at college anyway, as he searches for his true calling. I hope he finds that math is still it and that no matter what he takes in college it is going to be more work than it was in HS. This semester has been a real wake-up call at this school. Lots of VERY smart and talented kids. Trouble with being a big fish in a small pond is when the dam breaks and you find your self out to sea

I sort of thought that was the case when Son got the bad registration draw but I’m glad I followed up.

D1 gets to register early as part of the honors program.
Woody have the party you love it and life is short!!!
toilet leaked (seal) upstairs leaked onto dining room ceiling fortuantely only had to dry it out and paint.
i would want to do something to about the potentially suicidal girl do you know any professionals you could ask. ?

I am pretty sure that’s how it works for S as well but at four hours, it would only give him a semester’s worth of credit. Plus, you can’t use AP credits for any classes in your major and it seems to me that they mostly take the place of electives and so… knowing my kid he’ll still take the classes and just graduate with more classes than he actually needs. I guess he talked to H last night and so I won’t expect a call today. Still H is getting better about telling me about their conversations. While he’ll take the necessary sciences to stay on track for pre-med stuff, he’s also taking a course in the classics and Macroecon. As a 5 year latin student who LOVED Vergil, I think he’s really going to love next semester as much as this one. It also was a good call to talk to his dad considering we just got the second semester bill! It makes H feel better about paying that huge chunk while knowing son is not only really working hard, but loving the work as well. S did send me his paper for his oral presentation the other morning before he gave it and while he was a good writer in High School, it’s clear the nuances of his writing are reaching a whole new level. I am sticking with all good news today.

Today rates as just about the laziest days of my life. So tomorrow my plan is to be super motivated.

Good luck with that! On Saturday, I have to take the beautiful hibiscus out of the pots and put in ornamental cabbage or something. It’s always so difficult…so many of the flowers love the “Indian summer” and look so much better than they did in the real summer. But some time in the next few weeks we’ll have a hard freeze and the plants will turn brown and I won’t have time to do anything about it. Dead brown plants do not add anything to the Missypie Christmas display.

Modadunn - The gray (grey?) days have begun here in Ohio too. I noticed this morning that there are different shades on gray in the sky, layers of pale grey on light grey on dark grey clouds. There is no way we will stay here through retirement. I cannot stand this.

missypie - same here. and because we never sent D’s AP Calc score, which will exempt her from the one math required math class, her advisor insisted she register for Linear Algebra for next semester! I’m trying to get her to own this one and call CB herself - I’m counting on the prospect of Linear Algebra to motivate her ;)

Glad other people can’t remember either. There was a boy in elem school with that last name, and he spelled it with whatever vowel the color doesn’t use, so I’ve been mixing them up since 3rd grade.

Same with Cairo. There is a town in southern Illinois with that name and they pronounce it with a different vowel than the city in Egypt, so I never remember which is which.

Linear Algebra would have been enough to motivate my son…but alas, no math credits for him. He’d take Lit and writing classes until my bank account went dry, so not much motivation for him to take care of it himself.

But here’s the odd thing (another reason why I thought the AP credits had been taken care of.) He’s a Psych major and got a 5 on the AP psych exam. His advisor let him skip Psych 101 and take the next class. Why did she do that if he didn’t have the credit? I guess they were relying on self-reporting at the time, thinking the official report would arrive.

Hi,

I have no one in FY, but I have enjoyed this thread very much. A few of you I have communicated with here or in PM or e-mail, but I think many of you might want to know this to be sure to check with your child(ren)'s school about when a declaration of major must be made.

My older child entered uni with a year of AP credit and was frced to declare his major at the end of his first year, because he was classified as a junior. You can be sure that we made sure the same wouldn’t be forced upon the second at her school, and it wasn’t. She does get to register sooner, though. Her school is a private.

The college may not give you credit for the AP/IB exam, but they can use it as a basis for placement. S1 got a fair bit of placement for post-AP courses taken at his HS, though none of it got him actual credit. That was fine with him. He still registered for classes as a freshman.

OTOH, his best bud entered our flagship as almost a junior by credits and has always gotten to register based on the AP/placement exam standing. I’ve pointed out to S2 that he’s already a soph at our flagship based on AP/IB through the end of junior year of HS, which opens some possibilities for taking a term off for overseas travel in addition to study abroad if he chooses.

DD entered college with 3 AP math classes (11 credits). And I know that she will be able to use them (they are not in her major).

There is something that this college does and I don’t quite understand it. A student must have 3 semesters of a language. Odessa girl already had 3 years of Spanish under her belt. But she wanted to take German in college. Anyway…because she took a language in hs, she was tested for a language. And somehow tested through 2 classes of Spanish. So all she needed was to take a semester of German. But what I don’t understand is how the “credits” to this works. Does that mean it is 2 less classes she has to take overall? Does it mean she needs to take 2 classes in anything she wants to? I have asked her until I am blue in the face, and she got so frustrated at me the last time that she shook her arms and almost stomped her feet. Students need so many “General Ed” credits to graduate. I am so confused about all of this. Don’t want to frustrate Odessa girl about it, but at some point we need to know for certain what all of this means. Thanks for reading my vent!

eddieodessa – If the school requirement is 3 semesters, and your daughter only needs to take 1 semester, then she’ll take two elective courses, that is, two of anything else she wants (assuming that the language test was for placement, not for credit). She’ll need the credit hours from those two courses, but not courses in language to fill them.

But is it 3 semesters of any language(s), or 3 semesters of the same language? (Does the requirement say “3 semesters” or “through the third semester”? There’s a difference).
