Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

D has lost weight at school. She says she doesn’t eat as much which is fine, I just wish she wouldn’t skip meals. Also she walks a lot.

ShawbridgeSon also appears to have lost a little bit of weight, which is good, despite taking advantage of the eat as many times as you want between 7 AM and 7 PM and ordering in pizza at 10 on some nights. He had gained a few extra pounds when in the throes of sleep apnea, lost a bit of it post-surgery (liquid diet and pain), but apparently the surgery becomes ineffective if you gain a lot of weight (10% or 20% of body weight). He’s 6’4" and probably about 215, down from 220 but could probably drop to 200 or 205 without cost and with benefit.

I was 6’1" 165 lbs when I entered college and was 6’2" 180 when I graduated, probably 0% bodyfat as I played varsity sports and worked out. Put on muscle that added probably another 5 pounds after a knee injury in grad school and spent lots of time in the weight room and sculling. Now, I’ve gained weight that is not muscle. Ah well. The ravages of being a parent. Time to hit the gym (did so this AM in London).

Our son has gained weight due to changes in both diet and exercise. Normally, he would start football practice in August and then go directly into basketball practice in November. At college, he played flag football and pickup basketball, but they are not giving him the intensity of workout he is used to.

He also says he hasn’t been able to resist all the junk food that is available (pizza, fried stuff). At home he can eat a lot of volume without getting that many calories because of the way I cook. He has an off campus house for next year and plans to do his own cooking, which should help his eating habits. He hopes to lose the few pounds he has put on over Christmas break. Between my low calories cooking, his job (which will be somewhat physically demanding), and his expectation of being able to go to the gym at night, he should get back on track.

D has lost a ton of weight, no idea how much, but she looks great! Walking everywhere and healthier food choices at school undoubtedly factor into it. She’ll be living off grounds next year so will be interesting to see how she fares cooking for herself. Will probably keep some type of meal plan.

D has gained weight, she informs me, and is not happy. She is tall and relatively thin, so nobody but she notices, I suspect. Although she walks a lot, she doesn’t get the intense dance workouts she had in HS. I suspect that makes the difference. She’s signed up for an intense Jazz dance class next semester.

It was snowing hard in Dallas this morning. No chance of it sticking since it was in the 70s this weekend. But the girls were very excited.

We were awakened at 5 am by one of the worst sounds one can hear - a Christmas tree crashing to the tile floor - that ornament breaking sound is just terrible. It was one of the kitchen trees. Only a few permanent casualties but H will be busy with the glue today. Might have to delay the bus by a bit.

Oh, I’ve been meaning to mention this. I really wasn’t getting all your talk of Tim McGraw, until the other day when I realized that I had him confused with Vince Vaughan! LOL…kind of a difference…

S2 (dance major) came home looking somewhat taller and thinner but maybe it was just taller OR thinner. Anyways. it took a visit back to HS dance teachers who flocked around him and announced, he WAS a bit taller, leaner, had put on more muscle, carried himself a little differently and his skin was better (moderate acne seems to be gone).

He has discovered the salad bar as well. And enjoys soups, experimented with LENTILS and loves them! And care packages of home-baked goodies seem to be appreciated but not devoured with the speed I would have expected. He maintains he doesn’t have time to eat ‘recreationally’ any more. When he gets back to his room he just wants to get to bed.

My dancer D is a HS Junior and she says that she has no desire to do any kind of dancing in college. Maybe she’ll change her mind, because I predict that the pounds will settle when she stops dancing 10+ hours a week.

D1 didn’t gain wait until her junior year…dunno what was different besides a breakup! Still hasn’t lost the weight. :frowning: D2 looks a little more filled out from all the weightlifting this fall but still wearing same size of jeans. Now that she is done and running more I expect the muscle mass to decrease.

She finished adolescence and stopped needing as many calories, perhaps.

Ah, the story of my life in the 21st century - my body needs almost no calories, but I want to eat them anyway.

They keep saying not to starve yourself bc then you start losing muscle mass but that’s in an ideal world where we’re all exercising regularly. I know I’m not. Kept saying as soon as they were all out of the house…

^^^^Isn’t that the truth missypie^^^^

DD did appear to have gained a little weight, but it doesn’t surprise me. When one goes from swimming several thousand yards 6 days a week to walks to class, and a few runs/swims a week, it’s going to happen. She did sign up for a swim class next semester as a way to make sure her schedule has room for exercise. She started off the year well, but once classes started in full it became difficult. Now if I could get her younger brother to gain a few pounds…He’s started his high school season. I’m trying to pump extra calories into him, but he doesn’t always cooperate.

I’ve decided we will put up the tree without D. She doesn’t finish until the 18th or 19th. I’ve purchased ornaments for each child every year. I’ll keep hers to the side so she can put them on the tree. I started my massive holiday cleaning this week. I try to clean/polish all the wood work, doors, and cabinets, wash walls, and clean the hardwood and tile floors by hand in December. It’s kind of a crazy task on my part, but the house sure looks nice when it’s done.

I met with a contractor this morning to get an estimate on replacing windows on one side of the house. Not looking forward to getting the estimate…Merry Christmas!

rrah I understand the cleaning. I’m almost there. Powder room and entry way to go. I’m not going to do much to the play room as we are redoing it in Jan. as a TV/den now that we really don’t need it for the kids. It’s a HUGE undertaking but it looks so nice when you are done.

Cards made and mailed this morning. I’m on schedule so far…

Just got notification that the Whoopie Pie I had sent to son arrived about an hour ago. Actually, come to think about it, this is some seriously quick shipping! And nice that they send out a ups tracking number! Now… the clock starts ticking to see when and if son stops by the post office… AND if we hear from him when AND IF he does.

Modadunn can I ask where you got it from. S loves whoopie pies and this might make a great idea for his B’day.

D1 looked about the same, her university does not have an official cafeteria, and are required to spend a certain amt of money in afood court situation which she says is disgusting. she eats easy mac, my mother and I send her fruit, she wants gs to whole foods for Christmas. She has also been sick and not able to exersize as much. Some say the added weight gain is from the drinking. I know my D does engage sometimes. She reports not as much as some kids who do it everyday.
BIG difference between Tim McGraw and Vince Vaughn, Ihave conceded to EDDie though no energy to fight her and Faith. sorry about your tree.
I was thinking about those presents stashed away, my H made me so mad because he bought my stocking at Newbury Comics, what would I want from there. I made him take it back, this year no stockings except for the kids, as good of a gift giver as I am he really doesnt do well. I do want Uggs so I sent him an email with an offer for free shipping’ dont know if he did anything with it.

Oh, I hope you get the Uggs. Zappos has plenty, free next day shipping. I’d so like some Uggs because they are so soft and cozy, but Ds have forbidden them.

I got the website from somewhere on CC (maybe that care package thread). It’s wickedwhoopies dot com.
