Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

I was really worried about this as D was on both school and studio dance teams, but as I posted on a prior thread, she has actually lost weight.

She does miss dancing. Over Thanksgiving she watched the Macy’s parade to look for the girls from her studio (she did the parade twice), and watched some of her old competition videos. I am hoping she will get involved in some kind of dance group in college.

Okay, so I had a busy few days and came back in at the “Apocalyptic Inlaws Vanquish Cockroaches” notion and it’s taken me a half hour to stop laughing. Too funny, MP!

For all those trying to communicate with Engs, I strongly recommend the following question: “So what did you think about Hawking’s 'Brief History of the Universe.”
But be warned – they’ll answer : )

And last but not least, I’ve found all that missing weight your collective kids have dropped: right here in the chair ; P

Missypie – why? I actually have a pair that are truly 18 years old - and they really haven’t changed all that much in all that time. I have a pair of slippers that I couldn’t live without. But it’s freezing where I am… blue toes without them.

Moda-these look great, they might be a good thing to send for a birthday.

I confess that I had never heard of whoopie pies before (which is why I checked them out).
I thought you were sending a “whoopie cushion”.

why forbidding Uggs? D2 didnt dance much in the summer, size 2 jeans started in the fALL SIZE 0 jeans without losing weight, just the change in muscualture. She will not major in dance but Ican se eher always doing it . it makes her so happy

DTE, have you visited the Dressing Young thread? Uggs are hugely popular among the teen girls here which means I’m too old for them. 17 year old D has three pairs…you should see her when she goes to school in the morning (they have drill team first) - dance attire of the day, with baggy sweatpants over it, with the sweatpants tucked into the Uggs…ah to be a beautful 17 year old who can pull that off! As for myself, I just want warm feet!

I don’t know about what “they” say, but I say if I starve myself, pretty soon I’ll start eating everything in sight. And then I’m worse off that if I hadn’t starved myself.

ummm…so I guess eating the leftover baklava from bookclub last night wasn’t a good idea??? ughhh…I just couldn’t resist! :(

NMinn–throw in a cup of good, strong coffee, and I’m right there with you on the baklava.

One “exciting” tidbit–We’ve officially paid for the first year of college tuition and room/board. Payment is due next week. DH sent it in a few days ago. Yeah!!! Just books and incidentals left.

Thanks Modadunn. I have to check it out. I grew up on whoopie pies - Grandmother made them and my mom and I lived with my Grandparents. I learned how to make them and I’ve made them over the years for my kids. S LOVES them so this is a great idea.

On the weight – D ways basically the same as when she went. Started gaining a bit but took it right back off. Seemed that they were all eating several desserts. They figured that that wasn’t a good idea – stopped and they have all gone back to their original weight. S seems to gain when he is home and take it off as soon as he goes back to school. He is in an on campus apt so cooks for himself. I’m sure that he eats and well but I think he doesn’t keep all that much junk food around and when he is home he really wants it – the junk food that is.

I wish it was that easy for me. I swear that I only have to look at food and I gain weight… As I get older I think it’s getting worse.

I have Uggs slippers I live in (uh, and they look it :::::as I gaze down at my feet:::: I just got some Nike wool boots, fleece-lined that are really cozy and non-Uggs. They’re black wool (also come in leather) and apparently are very water resistant.

I just made a guiness stout-ginger-molasses cake. New recipe. Man it smells good in here! I’m trying it to see if I can give this in mini-loaves to friends (in the cute Crate & Barrel kitchen towel I got half price last year)!

Oh… I remember getting that bill. I remember H handing it to S when he came home (since it was addressed to him after all) but I completely forgot about H’s paying it. No wonder he is a tad grouchy. I don’t think it’s ultimately due however until Jan. However, I might need to bring that up tomorrow… preferably really early, right before he walks out the door. Makes D’s tuition look like a bargain! ha!

Uggs? Uggh! Now Merrell clogs – now we’re talking. My D rolls her eyes at both. Her roommate is an ugg-ly (not that there’s anything wrong with them). I am a Merrell gal. I love it that we seem to find each other out there. I have several pairs: my everyday homely Merrells, my “dress” (sorta new not faded) Merrells, my khaki Merrills (that I wear when I’m not too chunky to wear my khakis, but it’s been um awhile), and some backup new “dress” Merrells that I got brand new on eBay. Oh, come on, I know there’s someone in this group. I come across people like me in random places and it’s like we have a secret handshake. Um, did I get off topic? Sorry. I just love my clogs.

Would appreciate hearing about colleges selected by last years’ INTEL / Siemens winners (semi-finalists, finalists). Thanks.

I was wearing Uggs WAY before they became the current teenage craze. ****es me off I can’t wear them now for fear of trying to look hip

And while I was at a dog show a few weeks ago someone came up and said to me - you know friends don’t let friends wear crocs.

Well I have to admit, they are not attractive, and I eschewed them for a long time, til I put some on my feet. NOTHING is more comforatable if you are standing a lot (which you do when grooming a dog - even a malamute) Of course I don’t wear them in the ring but, my oh my my feet feel so good to me when I wear those ugly things

My mom, also a dog person, wears her Crocs around the kennel. She never wears them to a show. She would forget to take them off before going in the ring. I was dog sitting for her and will admit to slipping a pair on while throwing bumpers in the pond for the dogs. At least they made hosing my feet off very easy and they have much more support than flip flops.

I got crocs last summer – decided if I was going to get such ugly shoes, I’d get them in lime green to demonstrate my sense of humor at wearing the things. If only the rest of my shoes were that comfy…

19mb81, many Intel and Siemens finalists get into some highly ranked schools. Some choose to attend. Others take advantage of excellent opportunities (financial, early research opportunities, graduate work) elsewhere. As is often the case, it’s not one single award/test score/EC that gets kids into a selective school (which is what I assume you really want to know). Doing well at Intel/Siemens doesn’t guarantee an acceptance to a top school. Doesn’t hurt, but it is not necessarily the golden ticket.

Got a note from #theoryson to ask me to wait to get and decorate the tree until he gets home. That was nice. We found the tree (on our property) today but we just marked where it was. I wrote and told him we found this year’s tree and he sent back his request, so we will cut it and decorate it after S comes home. I was not at all sure he would care, but it is nice to know that he does.
