Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Not as heavily as if there were NO choices available…They dodged a bullet!

Well, if anyone cares, Texas Stadium (former home of the Dallas Cowboys) has been imploded…now it’s a big ol’ stadium shaped pile of rubble. Watched live on TV, will drive by in about an hour on the way to church. It’s on my commute to both work and church, so I figure I must have driven by it 15,000+ times. Weird that in the 21st century US, a building is worthy of demolition after 35 years. D got to dance there twice during its final season.

I am a little addicted to this thread and the Health and Wellness Thread. There - I admitted it. :)

Just dropped S1 off at the airport for his next interview, which starts with a dinner at 7:00 pm California time, followed by the presentations that are scheduled to go to 1:00 to 2:00 am (so 4:00 to 5:00 am east coast time). Then they start up again at 7:00 am after only a few hours of sleep. He will be out on a construction site all day, and the kids will be given coveralls and steel toed boots to wear. He had to bring his passport and official transcript to the interview, among other things. He gets back at midnight on Tuesday and his senior thesis is due on Thursday, so he needs to get some work done on his flights because that paper is still very rough. He is headed to California via Charlotte and Phoenix, so doesn’t get in until about 4:00 pm. It’s an $800 ticket. For that price it seems like there could be a more direct route. The return is just as convoluted but through Chicago. I’m tired just thinking about it.

lindz, nice story for your S2. H went to Brazil to see S1 last fall. I passed on that trip but will plan to go visit him in about six to eight months, once he has settled down.

eggmom, that’s too bad about your friend. cc has made a huge difference in our level of preparation for each stage of launching these teens, but has also really helped me see how common it is for kids to struggle with one thing or another in college. It gives me more context when my kids mess up.

Wow, Analyst, that sounds like an intense schedule. We hope it goes well for S1!

D has applied to be an RA next year. Her school has 4 types of RAs in each dorm. One is the regular type and three are specialized- one deals with health issues, one deals with tutoring and the other deals with computers and technology issues. She has applied to be the technology kind, the RCC. The RCCs have to take a class that lasts a quarter as part of the requirement. During her class last week, a designer from Apple came in and brought iPads and MacBooks for the students to disassemble. We was a former student from her school who got his masters in '08. He showed them the specific parts on the MacBooks that he designed. She was so excited. She had a nerd moment. She’s already called her Dad twice to help her with her homework, since he’s the real technology expert. I’m sure there will be calls to her older sister, who is an actual Apple employee. We all find this RCC thing pretty amusing. She is very capable but the least technological in our family (except for me but I’m not even in the running).

“She is very capable but the least technological in our family”
Sounds like it won’t be that way for long.

Good luck to AnalystS! My head is spinning just reading that. Is he accustomed to sleep-deprivation?

OMG! I just saw that I made “Senior Member” status. I feel so special!

Congrats woody! :)

Ish…anyone else read the goodbye thread from marite??? :frowning: Once again I am glad to have found a safe haven here!

It is a beautiful, sunny and warm spring day in Mn. Just lovely! D2 was home for the weekend and is not looking forward to going back to school later this afternoon. Trying to encourage and support her for this final push! One month to go! I suspect she will come home the next three weekends until finals.

I’m with you NM, on the safe place we have here after lurking on the Marite thread and feeling dirty afterwards. There are far too many people on CC who hide behind the anonymity and sling mud, and it just doesn’t happen here.

Checked into the '10 thread, and they’re talking about prom dresses, graduation, FA…seems like ages ago and I couldn’t be happier that its behind me!

cpeltz…Prom! Just talked about this (again) with D2 last night. She told her bf last night he should take his friend who just broke up with her bf. Her fb staus was something like…“$450 prom dress and no date anymore” . He rolled his eyes but D2 doesn’t want to feel guilty if he doesn’t go his senior year.

^ I’m glad a lot of that is behind me too, except for the prom dress. I kind of miss that. I get to do it all over 4 years from now with S. Of course that still means no more prom dress :(

emgamac, that is so impressive that your D is learning all that stuff. Has she found out that she has the position yet or does that happen later?

I looked at the Marite thread and feel very sad to lose her as a poster. The negativity is equally disturbing.

I wish I had a girl. I would love to go shopping for a prom dress.

woody, S1 shouldn’t have any problem staying up until 5:00 am (very much a night owl), but not so sure about how he will do waking up early the next day. He doesn’t seem worried about it–says he only sleeps out of boredom. The company was very upfront that how the student performs on almost no sleep is part of what they are checking, so the schedule is not at all accidental. I asked him to shoot me an email or give me a call tomorrow if he gets a chance to let me know how its going.

The Analyst…I am excited for him! Sending him major energy vibes!!!;)

Glad I’m not being tested on that …

I could have been tested on that in my early 20’s. Now? Better not count on me for the all nighter. What I used to do with ease, would now have me curled up in a fetal position in the corner.

Saw a little bit of that Marite thread, but now it looks like it’s been perm removed vs closed. (?) Big brother (or sister) and all of that.

Beautiful day and all I want to do is research companies to come and do all my spring yard work. It’s to the point where I feel overwhelmed and then it still looks like like I am half done.

I’m with you Modadunn. Yesterday worked around the house and yard all day. Then went out to dinner (nice) and a show. Got home at midnight and couldn’t wait to get in the pjs and crawl into bed. Used to be after that H and I would come home and have a night cap and stay up even later. Not any more for this old lady!!

TheAnalyst, D has made it through the first round interview with Residential Computing. They will send her application on to the individual dorms that she listed as preferences and then they will schedule individual interviews. She indicated a preference for the freshman dorms (which is about 20). Each dorm’s Resident Fellows select their own staff of RAs. She should find out if she has been selected for a position before the housing draw next month. Thank goodness she thinks job interviews are fun-actually enjoys them. In my day, RAs got free room and board. Her school pays about $2k per quarter and a single room. I suppose it’s a sign of the increase in costs in the last 20+ years since my college days.

Oh no! What happened to the “Marite” thread? I saw it this morning, but can’t find it now.

emgamac

How exciting for your daugher! My son is a sophomore and applying for a summer ResCom position keeping fingers crossed

I’m so glad we made the drive to see Son’s choir concert…he loves it so and was very appreciative that we came. As I think about it, choir is the perfect activity for a person with a brain like his. He can learn complex music quickly, then at performance time, there is only one task: Watch the conductor and sing. Nothing to sort out or schedule or prioritize…just one thing on which to focus.

His room was as bad as I’d imagined - maybe worse…and he said he’d cleaned up a bit before we arrived. It only took about 15 minutes to make it all presentable. (Of course, I have a sneaking suspicion that those clothes that I picked up off the floor will come out the hamper and be re-worn, but I don’t have to know about it.)
