Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

The words you love to hear …

I know I’ve posted about D’s cool summer internship; perhaps some of my anxiety about its working out has been due to the fact I found and “made” her apply to it and hounded her about follow up emails and calls …

Today, after one week, she walked into my office and said, “Thanks for making me apply.”

She finds it really hard/challenging, and stimulating and exhilarating all at once.

congrats zetesis!

Thanks; hugely relieved it didn’t go the other way (“I hate this job …”).

We can all hope we’ll hear those words someday! Isn’t it great when everything works out? Congrats to all in the Zetesis family!

Zetesis, the internship sounds very worthwhile, especially in light of your daughter’s appreciation of the experience.

woody, yes, Zermatt was fantastic! We treasure those memories - our only ski vacation in Europe. We planned the trip with another family who flew into Zurich and met us in Zermatt. I can’t remember the details, but they also had some sort of mixup on the train - something to do with family members ending up on two different trains from the airport to the city. We all breathed a sigh of relief when we reached Zermatt, had a great first day of skiing, and then the morning of the second day my athletic younger daughter (six at the time) got really sick with the flu and didn’t ski another day. She, and we, are still glad that we went!

Gosh… that line’s a keeper, Zetesis. I am really growing a tad weary of the mostly thankless favors around here. I am already completely over that initial thrill of settling S back into the nest by doing his laundry and basically stocking the fridge with food. Granted, it’s not much, but I had sure gotten used to not going to the grocery store every day. He is starved by 5:30 and D16 doesn’t even get home until closer to 7. We either are making dinner in stages or someone is constantly messing up the kitchen or both!

However… I’ve also taken on a project for D’s team and making a season highlight video from film clips and pictures people take. Anyway… favor time. I want to at least appear cool so … for all those parents whose kid’s are on sports team, could you ask for a song or two for me that is “inspiring and fire up” worthy? Yes, I could ask my own D, but I’d like to not argue with her about what to include and what to cut and on and on. Not sure what that says about our relationship at this stage of her life, but it definitely is exhausting. She wants me to do it, but she doesn’t want to know about it for fear it will look like SHE had anything to do with it. Anyway… I have a few that I used for son’s last spring but more recent would be good. I have some soundtrack instrumentals, but need to pop it up in places with current good songs that would fit. so… Missy and NMN especially - ask the D’s and get back to me? I’d greatly appreciate it. Because for how much I shouldn’t care, I think I could knock this puppy out of the park and be “cool mom for a day” with great music. Yeah yeah… I know. I walk a fine line between bitter/resentful and please just let me make you happy.

oh moda, you’re breaking my heart!!
D continues to pound pavement and send apps and resumes. Today, she got a phone call from a shopkeeper in town who is looking for help. D didn’t apply there but an old boss of hers was shopping in the shop this AM and was talking up D. This former boss said D was quite an asset to her company last year. Unfortunately, she has had a lean year and is not able to give D as many hours as she would like this year. What a great woman and mentor for my D!

hugs to you moda…I think most of our kids need a little lesson in “how to treat your mom.” when they get back. “Headstrong” by Trapt is not exactly new but it fits a sports highlight video. Good luck with your project and know that you are always a cool mom here.

Mine have been back for a week but spent the last two nights back closer to school wit friends and family. Work starts for them on Tueday.

Grades were posted today. TwinK HAD to earn a high enough gpa to dig herself out of the probation hole she dug for herself first sem, She did it! Cumulitive GPA for frosh year 2.03…we’ll take it! TwinE earned above what was needed to keep her honors scholarship so all is well in the history house.

Zetesis, what a nice thing to say. Almost as important as the fact that she likes the job is that she is willing to give you credit.

Moda, I don’t know if these will help but I know S1 is a big fan of Jay-Z. He sent the family a link to “On to the Next One” right before he left so that must be a current favorite. When S2 was putting together music for his bachelor auction cat-walk in high school, it was almost all rapp so that appears to be what is current (yuck). On the other hand, in the car going to games we don’t allow rap so both boys would listen to the following to get pumped (and appeared to enjoy): Queen (we are the champions; we will rock you); rocky theme song; chicago bulls theme song; and I get knocked down but I get back up again (chumbawamba).

Analyst, I’m laughing over my coffee. That Jay-Z song is actually on the CD I use to push myself to drive to work every day. The kids think it’s hilarious that I can actually “rap” (in mom fashion of course) along.

Upon the recommendation of readers here, I have purchased the first book in the “Girl” trilogy. D is already anxious for me to read it so she can have it.

historymom, congrats to both your twins, but especially to TwinK. Good for her! I have a soft spot for kids that have to fight their way back and do so successfully.

I once tried to rap along with the *In the Heights *soundtrack. I even had the lyrics in front of me and, of course, I was an Epic Fail. The kids were so amused that now they try to get me to rap along with the radio, just to laugh at me.

sabaray – me too! Just bought all three of them and just started Girl.

Moda – what about facebook creeping your d. and gang to see if they have listed some favs in their profile info. Most kids don’t bother locking down their profiles. McSon is super great at editing just the right music to video (and he darned well better be considering the cost of his program  so if you wanted to post a rough cut at vimeo or something I could text him to go take a peek and make suggestions. However, I should warn you his tastes are VERY eclectic and may not reflect your d’s group.

For an upbeat instrumental that is FUN to edit to, try the song TANK by the Seatbelts (not the emerson lake and palmer one). (That’s the Cowboy Bebop theme song from anime land.)

zetesis - what a wonderful moment.

Eggson has apparently landed his first real job. He interviewed this morning and just has to turn in a driving record to start getting scheduled. He will be manning an outdoor parking lot booth, taking money and pointing to parking places for about 24 hours a week.

He is quite pleased. He had a friend who did this job last year so followed his instructions on getting hired. (Of course far superior to the advice that DH and I tried to dispense for what we considered better jobs.) Oh well, it’s a job and he is happy!

Snapped up the Headstrong song but cannot find Tank by the seatbelts on Itunes. Am I missing something?

I only have imovie, but it does a fine job to accommodate my hacking ways. I wish we had a little bit more film to interject but it will have to do. Maybe I will post on Vimeo when done, but not sure my free membership won’t be exceeded on that one.

Please keep song suggestions coming. Trying to avoid Rap mostly because I cannot freak out other parents with the mostly explicit lyrics. Some do not have clean versions and while I have the talent to parse together music, I do not understand the use of the N word, sex that objectifies women or … and here’s the PC part… any reference to Money defining you.

Ha! In my case it’s lack of money that defines me. Definitely know where you’re coming from though in terms of some of the language. Some songs really appeal to me, others not so much.

km, we’ll have to compare notes as we read. I think I may have to keep a chart to keep all the names straight.

Moda just asked TwinK and she suggested “Gonna Win” by Bryan Adams. Follow the link I am going to PM you to the youtube video featuring the song and our Gaels beating Villanova in the round 2 of the NCAA tourney. ;)

sabaray: Thanks we are proud of her. It was a tough year in a lot of ways but she loves her school and I think will be more than ready to return in August.

moda, if you pm me your email I can send you tank if you’re looking for upbeat instrumental (safer than lyrics
It might be listed as the Cowboy Bebop Theme Song instead of its real name.

wait a minute, try this download from here:

Modadunn, how about Jai Ho! (You are my destiny) [featuring Nicole Scherzinger] by A.R. Rahman - from Slumdog Millionaire. [Suggested by D1]

Just checked out the Parents of HS '12 thread, but am too intimidated to join. Though D2 is finishing 10th grade next week, I’m not ready to focus again on the college application process. Guess I’m just hoping she can finish relatively well this term. And it’s more fun to follow this thread.

Just noticed this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/935947-marist-college-poughkeepsie-ny.html</a></p>

I took a peek as I know some students who are interested and it may be of interest to parents of students with ADHD, Asperberger’s, etc. I know there are some considering new schools or transfers.
