Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Moda - DS and DH (and fellow Venturing Scouts) did 135 miles of boundary waters 2 summers ago. What an experience!
They loved it.

Next week, DH leads a different crew on a canoeing trip in Arkansas. We are assured that this is nowhere near the recent flooding.

Meanwhile, Eggniece remains in foreign hospital. All signs point to food poisoning, but doctors continue to test her liver.
There is a chance that hepatitis A is involved. We hope she is released tomorrow.

And back in the states, eggson is reaping the monetary (if not intellectual) benefits of his first real job: parking lot attendant.

Love you guys.

my D had to get the hep A vaccine before she went to South Korea, I was worried about it but now maybe not so much. I hope she is better soon.

Are you ready for game 7?

Yes, coolweather. Go Celtics!

Congrats to your d on her grades, dte! And thanks for mentioning the candle lighting Wed at 7 pm. Best wishes to all on your BC board.

Even though I’m studiously avoiding the intimidation factor on the '12 thread, we are quietly working on a list of colleges D2 may visit this summer. It’s easy to find reaches, but we’re working on finding some loveable likelies.

My son is in Boston now and he goes Celtics! But I am in the west coast…
It does not matter. We will have win-lose or lose-win in our family.

All I can say is something must have happened to the Celtics on that flight across the country … Honestly, is this the same team that was on fire just a couple of nights ago? Love 'em anyway – go Celtics!

I had the same reaction: who are these guys? I want MY Celtics back for Game 7. I lived in Boston during the Larry Bird years, and I love the Celtics/Lakers lineup. I’d love to see this next game to showcase that great teamwork that makes the Celtics really shine – and win!

My husband used to want to take a “canoeing the boundry waters” vacation. I read “box latrines” and “pack it in/pack it out” and said that if he goes, it has to be without me. “Vacations” must include indoor plumbing.

Yesterday H decorated the house for Flag Day. Flag Day was Monday. Just sayin’.

I’m with you, missypie! H’s family has a lake cottage which is nice to visit; one of the problems, however, is the tendency of the well to run out of water which then requires water to be trucked in. Expensive and inconvenient.

Hope eggniece continues with improvement. Best wishes to ffscoutS.
D is exhausted from her internship and the commute into the city but somehow managed to rally when a group of friends arrived at our house last night about 10PM.
Just a staycation this summer for woody family - although S and D will certainly have weekends away. On the other hand, so will H and I! This weekend it’s “elegant but casual” wedding in Wellesley.

The “Pie” family has always gone on fabulous trips, both for spring break and in the summer (and sometimes over Thanksgiving) - no one can believe (including the family members themselves) that there are no trips planned for the summer. We went to New Orleans over spring break. This year we have financed trips to NYC, Chicago and Charleston for various of the kids. We have one kid in college and one starting in '11. Not the financial era to spend thousands on a European trip. (Plus, I’m taking off two weeks for college visits with D.)

I’m looking forward to the day that the kids are done with school and are oh, paying for a fabulous anniversary trip for H and me. Right now we are budgeting so D can go to Morocco next summer. Bread and water for the rest of the family.

Funny- our last “big” trip was to Ann Arbor once D was accepted and had some scholarship $ so it was no longer out of the realm of possibilities. In January, no less. I’d like our next trip to be a bit more exciting but it’s funny how the search for college takes over so much of your life!

My husband and friend did the boundary waters canoe trip every summer for about 10 years, his last being the summer I was pregnant with older daughter so it’s been 18 years! For a while he kept mentioning doing it again but now he admits, he’s too old and out of shape. Maybe he can get back in good enough condition by the time the second one leaves for college…

Peonies - we’re putting together a small but creative list for 12 kid also. I’m not intimidated by the thread, more amused! Maybe we can start a “been there done that” thread for second or third timers. (Those NYS people, my sophomore daughter is now working on a Chem Regents which she takes this afternoon, what a waste of time Regents are, but at least they’re much easier than a final would be.)

Missypie - thanks for remembering Flag Day. First daughter is born at Thanksgiving so when we had a choice as to younger daughters birth date we chose Flag Day “to be fair.” I remember it being a discussion in Elementary school when I was a kid, not so much anymore. Civics seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur.

Just found out my older daughters 3.6 won’t put her on Dean’s List, oh well. She needs a 3.75 in her major. I’d rather her take elective classes that challenge her and that she enjoys than go for the grade.

With Son, I took 3 days off to do the Oklahoma schools and H took Son to the Texas schools and we were done. D wants to go OOS, so there you have it. The Chicago/Pittsburgh trip could be fun, but the Kansas-Oklahoma-Arkansas trip next week could be more of a challenge. The list of Holiday Inns/Hampton Inns/Springhill Suites or whatever at which we are staying is depressing me in advance.

Chicago/Pittsburgh will definitely be fun. We took a quick tour of Pitt when D was admitted- she hated it. Two days later they offered her full tuition. She still hated it.

Lots to see and do in both cities. I loved Ann Arbor as did D but it was not to be. She’s happy with her choice but I’d be happy to see her in Michigan for grad school.

amtc - D also needed a 3.7 for Dean’s List but got a 3.6. She was hoping for it but is not too traumatized.
Also, sister bday is 7/4, her H is 6/14. They were married on Labor Day and their S was born on Memorial Day.

LOL sabaray re:

Kids. Mine hated his free school too.
Fortunately we’re in-state, so his Ann Arbor dream was in reach.
And as much as I love Ann Arbor, sabaray, I just can’t call AA in January a “vacation” So I think you’re due!

The thing that is so funny, KM, is that Pitt is still sending her material for the School of Medicine. They invited her to apply for the guaranteed admission to med school program and now she’s not even interested in medical school any longer. Maybe some students are sure of their passions when they leave high school but not D! To research, or not to research; to med school, or not to med school; grad school, yes; but in what, who knows?

Good thing she has a few more years to figure it all out.

Another city I really liked was Madison, Wisconsin. That was happily a summer visit for a conference that did not include the family. I had a blast!

What did she hate about Pitt?

In the big scheme of things, missypie, probably pretty superficial stuff. We arrived and the reception was poorly organized. There were lots of kids in “official” Pitt shirts basically talking to each other. We sat through a presentation which emphasized something that I want to call the Pitt Passport (but I’m not sure that’s correct). It was a relatively new initiative at the time but D was not interested. She attended an honors course and found it less than stimulating.
