Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Sounds like why Son and I both hated University of Tulsa. The worst-organized college visit ever. But I still recommend that locals look at the school because I think it’s a good school that, at least on that one day, hosted a horrible visit.

Pitt is definitely a good school and is on her list of potentials for grad school. H really liked it because of the price tag, or lack thereof. We also did not have a great visit to UVA (D’s ultimate school) but now she loves it and can’t imagine being anywhere else. Who knows how the teenage brain works.

amtc, a ‘been there done that’ thread sounds like it has lots of potential. In our family, though, two Ds are quite different, so lessons learned from first, while helpful, won’t get us through the process with second. We sort of have a ‘hard act to follow’ situation, though D2 does have strengths that D1 lacks.

re Pitt, a relative just finished an enjoyable and rewarding freshman year there. The entire family loved going to some Pitt athletic events (and they don’t live anywhere near Pittsburgh).

D has a good friend who attends Pitt and just loves it. He loves sports too! I guess that’s why “fit” is important in college admissions!

To chime in on the vacation – none here really either. H and I will go away alone for a couple of weekends with hotel stays but that is all.

With one at Bates and the older one starting grad school at Cornell - no vacations probably for the rest of MY lifetime…

Frequent flyer miles! The only way to travel!

FF Miles: I just finished booking a trip for my D to join me in Berlin at the end of July. I have a conference there, so my travel is covered, and I managed to get her most of the way there on miles we’ve accrued. Had I thought of this earlier, we could have done the whole thing on miles but the seats go fast.

The trip rewards her for her hard work this past year, including great improvement in German.

And I think it assuages my guilt just a bit. Remember, I’m the one who “made her” apply to her internship. While she finds it challenging and interesting, it is also stressful, and a lot of work, and she feels as if she’s lost her summer.

I’m not sure I need to plan a trip on top of a wedding in three weeks, but I think staying put in Berlin and day-tripping around and out won’t be quite so hectic as traveling throughout Germany, etc. (which we’ve also done).

Yeah, right.

Nice to hear how everybody is doing (including, of course, the World Champion LAKERS!).

S is with DH on his way to visit the new gf, then the two of them will drive up to our lake cabin in northern Wisconsin. He’s never had a gf, well, that we know about anyway, so this will be interesting! I’m heading up on the redeye (yuck) Thursday night. My mom always told my brothers and me that she really liked each of our BF or GF and was extremely warm to all of them…it wasn’t until after a breakup that she’d be honest. Her theory was to ALWAYS be nice to GF/BF because they might evolve into DW/DH and if she wanted to see her DD/DS, the best way to do so was to have the spouse want to see their MIL!

DH and I are going to Europe for a 2-week cruise and post-cruise visit in Barcelona for our 10th anniversary on the day we send S back for his sophomore year.  :)

Frequent flyer miles can be really difficult to use. My favorite was when we were trying to use younger D’s miles. You have to pay a $5 or $10 fee to use AA miles, and when you book travel online you pay the fee by credit card. But the credit card has to be in the name of the person with the frequent flyer miles. D - who was 12 at the time - didn’t happen to have a credit card in her name. You can call to make the reservation and they will take a credit card in a different name, but they charge $25 for talking to a live person - so you are paying a $25 fee to be allowed to pay them another $5 or $10 fee.

I remember the days of Larry Bird. was at the game where he " stole the ball" I have my friends sister here who is a perrsonal organizer cleaning out my D1 's room, that is my personal journey to clean out everything this summer while I am off. It is worth the money to avoid the attitude, and frankly dont have the steam.
I am not sure if we will visit any schools this summer unless it is in Boston she really wants to go south. warmer weather.

today is my anniversary 26 years, I am fortunate to have him.

Happy Anniversary to you and your husband, dte! I’m sure he would agree that he is fortunate to have you as well.

Could you send your friend’s sister to my house next? :)

And getting harder. I think we flew D1 home and to college (California to Michigan) on miles every trip she made save one. But with D2 it’s been almost impossible to get seats.

If you know what you want 330 days ahead (when they open reservations), you can pretty much get what you want. But we seldom know that far in advance.

In fact, last summer, at nearly the last minute, I got us free seats from LAX to Hawaii – but we had to fly … wait for it … through Denver.

Happy Anniversary, dte!

Ah, the days of Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale … Remember the short shorts they used to wear - much better when you could see their legs!

And when you could see their skin–tattoos on sports figures are getting out of hand!

And remember the days when athletes had crew cuts? Even though the style was definitely long hair on boys when I was in high school, the coaches made their guys keep their hair short.

Trinity HS in Euless Tx is in our district (preseason ranked #1 in the US). They have lots of Tongan players. Here’s what we typically see at that game:

^All that hair looks hot (temperature-wise)!

I know…think about two a days, in August, when it’s well over 100 degrees outside…

Happy Anniversary, DTE!

I remember watching Larry Bird play for Indiana State against my alma mater back when I was a student :)

Me too!!! We actually beat them Larry’s junior year. Of course, no one beat them in the regular season Larry’s senior year.
