Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

LOL. Once again, we are too competent. Able to fix any laundry issue from a distance.

Just bought a new washer (the broken one was 13 years old). Paid $10 extra to have it delivered tomorrow.

Our washer and dryer were purchased in 1986. I know we’re on borrowed time.

This week my H was trimming weeds and accidentally severed a wire that connects the air conditioning to the house. We live in Kansas (missypie, you would have driven by on your way from K-State to KU) and it’s been in the 90’s. It was in the high 80’s inside the house. In addition, I was taking my hs son somewhere, and put the car in park, and removed the key to discover my car was still running. It’s been an expensive week for repairs!

Saw lots of signs advertising “Oz” this and that on the drive between KU and K-State! Also, the first stretch of interstate in the country. There were some pretty parts of the road trip.

“woody, please elaborate! how did the cell phone go down the toilet?”
I have no idea and I really don’t want to investigate. I was away for the weekend at the time…
Application materials for the Culinary Institute of America came in the mail today addressed to S. Apparently, he has other plans post-graduation… I really don’t want to investigate…
Again, is it August yet??
PS Eggmom - Do you have an appliance gnome in the house! Heavens!!

Sabarary, congrats on the job. That is awesome. I wish H would have as much luck in his job hunt.

We just fed exed S1 a cell phone (unlocked Blackberry Tour). It cost $100 to get it to him. Shipping is not cheap. We could have saved that if I had been able to figure out the cell phone thing earlier but his situation was just too complicated for my poor brain. The phone he took, which worked in Brazil, apparently didn’t work in Australia, so he has been there a month with no phone.

S2 finished his first summer school class (easy A), is at a concert this week-end and then starts chemistry on Monday. We are going out over fourth of July to see him and he says we need to take him shopping.

Yes, I’m pretty excited. Fewer hours, close to home, more pay…all in all a win/win situation. H is euphoric as he has been shouldering most of the home responsibilities which is not easy as his job is a major stressor as well.

Lots of bumps with S this week; he was offered a position at his current summer employment so now he is back and forth with whether or not he wants to go to school. Many poor decisions on his part this week but, he is an adult. At least in age. Time to let go.

I am knocking on wood that none of our major appliances give way in the next few days or weeks!

^
Great news about the job!

Hang in there with S -I’m sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

Congratulations on the job Sabaray.

ShawSon came back from Europe last night and we stopped over at a friend’s house on the way back from the airport. The daughter is a good friend of ShawD and the son is a Princeton math geek buddy of ShawSon’s. Two girls with great social skills and two very sweet, rather large, brilliant nerds. The girls proposed to the guys that the four of them take a trip to Europe when they girls graduate from HS and to my surprise, they guys thought that this was a good idea. ShawSon later said that he’s enjoying spending time with ShawD, which really didn’t use to be the case. The sound of parents’ hearts going pit-a-pat.

Sorry to those who are bored to tears over Eggfamily’s appliance escapades. But, here is the dead dryer conclusion:

DH determined this morning that he could fix the dryer with a part that costs about $100 and is available at a store that is closed until Monday.

DS (he of the soggy laundry from Thursday) and I expressed high anxiety about no dryer until middle of next week when DH would have time to fiddle.

So, We looked on craigslist, found a 6 year old Maytag less than a mile away and negotiated a price of $80 with the owner. By 2pm, DH and DS had picked it up and brought it into the laundry room. I cleaned it in and out, DH connected everything with new hoses and such and by 5pm we had a load of towels drying.

The city will take the old one away if we put it on the curb next week as it happens to be large-item pick up.

This officially makes up for the recent oven incident.

I have been away at my lake house, planting flowers and cleaning, not really relaxing.
I am up for NYC. definately “What not to wear”
My unit was not on last thurs, but will be on this thurs. I know the doc who was the surgeon in the lung transplant, he did a couple of rotations in my unit. I took care of the patient in the next episode. I wasnt in the filming though. it was luck of the draw, depending on what was going on at the time. We had numbers to call if something happened. See I am such a good nurse nothing major happened on my watch. but I dont get my 15 minutes of fame. although I was ina picture in newsweek magazine when they took pictures in my unit years ago.
I hope we are at the end of breaking things. replaced the fridge it was 9 years old, element on the oven, and some expensive car repairs. along with some major home maintanance projects.
I wish my kids got along, but there is friction particularly with the new driver and one car to share. power struggle. but when push comes to shove…
Woody sounds like a great job.
Tm have a great summer.
Shaw that is so nice that your kids like each other. there is hope.
peonies as I have been told when I asked, everyone goes onthe roadtrip. It really would be fun

dte…we need to talk. H is crazed re the nurses strike here. He loves his nurses and protected them from layoffs this last year. Strikes are not good. sigh…life at our house is not good…

ish…H got a threatning call re the strike…wish we were invisible…

Congrats, Sabaray!
And sorry, but too funny re:

although I must admit when I wear my phone on my waistband there’ve been times it’s occurred to me that this very thing could happen.

NM, sorry for strike strife in your home. I used to live that as a child/teen, as my mom was in management for the post office in Canada, but also loved and protected her workers. It made national strikes (of which there used to be a lot!) really upsetting for her, and at times threatening (slashed tired and all that). What used to burn me most was when she’d suffer that kind of action when in truth she was always rooting for them and as often as not at odds with upper management.

Oh, and funny appliance story for Eggmom especially. When I moved in with my H. 7 years ago (a second marriage) he had a 30 year old kenmore gas stove. I’d always thought it was black. As I actually started to USE the thing, the paint started peeling off the stove top. Darned if it wasn’t YELLOW underneath.
So I asked him about it and he admitted he had PAINTED IT WITH ENGINE PAINT instead of buying a new one when he redecorated.

He failed to understand my desire for a new stove and seemed to think we could just repaint it. Blamed me for “wrecking it” (I’m pretty sure he was teasing me). I patiently explained that when one USES a stove, bad things happen, and that stoves are just better off never being used, and that life was just much better catered.

So we ended up with a nice new stainless PDQ when he realized I might leverage his handiwork for an expensive home catering service ;)

DTE, we have a soft spot in our heart for Children’s Hospital in Boston. ShawD had major vision problems that were incorrectly diagnosed at another hospital – they told us she had an incurable, genetic, degenerative eye condition and was close to legally blind at age 9-10. We went to Children’s for a second opinion, and saw one doc who questioned the original diagnosis, but couldn’t figure out the problem. ShawD underwent many painful tests. The head of ophthalmology at Children’s was terrific in eliminating all possible diagnoses and settled on one and then an optometrist there hooked us up with someone who was able to help and her distance vision is now 20/20. Great people and always nice staff. It is a longer, more complex story, but ranks in the “miracle” category.

I hope you are able to get back there soon.

Reading these appliance stories is making me LOL. We have a dishwasher that has been broken for more than 4 years now, mainly because replacing it would require a renovation of our kitchen that I think has original appliances. Knock on wood.

NM, I am sorry about all of the strike problems. I hope things are resolved quickly. And DTE, I did watch Boston Med on Thursday and was going to mention it to you- I really enjoyed the show and am looking forward to watching even more episodes.

Our appliance problem is the vacuum cleaner. I just can’t find one that is both light and powerful. It also feels like our air conditioning is not working downstairs, so need to call on that on Monday. At least the upstairs is fine, which is a separate system.

I had a good Skype conversation with S1 this morning. He has been there a month and loves his job to pieces. I pointed out he needs a haircut and it sounds like he may be relaxing a little too much – watching world cup soccer games that are on at 4:30 in the morning (and not going to bed the night before) is not conducive to a productive next day. As a consultant, week-ends still include some work, particularly for someone at his level. He said he appreciated the reminder and I was absolutely right (nice to hear for a change). The company has brought in three young guys (one each from England, Scotland, and the US) on a temporary basis (one year I think). S1 says any of those would kill to be in his shoes with a permanent position with this company. The US hire graduated from University of Miami (Ohio) with a major in finance and worked at a securities firm in NYC for two years previously. They all are fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese and the US hire did some stint in Tunisia so also speaks French. Very interesting group of young people. S1 had a strong social life in high school, made no friends in college, and is back to strong social life again now.

^^^ re: vacuum cleaners. I HATE the one we have at our beach house. It’s a heavy, awkward upright that I NEVER would have picked out – and, in fact, didn’t. H did, for reasons I can’t remember. (We’ve had it for 10+ years.) He thinks it’s a great vac – but, of course, never uses it. D will need a vac for her grad school apartment, so I’m gladly donating it to her. And I will go shopping for the replacement for here.

forgot to congratulate Sabaray on the job. awesome.
Shawbridge Childrens is definately a great place. and I hope to go back soon. working on it. I am glad your D is doing well, more than well…
I did not get central vac when we built the house h said no. so i said I wanted two vacs. dragging it up and down the stairs is really hard. promised I would have it, but 9 years later still have one. let me know what you decide.
NM I have never been on strike, we are non union. but we get treated pretty well.however eeryone is feeling the squeeze. I hope the situation resolves soon.
D2 is driving to work all by herself for the first time, crossed fingers and toes.

oh, and I worry about how sarcasm translates on the internet, it wasnt my nursing skills it just wasnt an eventful day, and I run when pictures are being taken, plus with my transformation, I dont look the same anymore anyway. That is a weird feeling to have people you have known for years not recognize you. It will be interesting to see how it looks from the “outside”

Sorry for the threats NMN! What are people thinking - that execs work in a vacuum?

Speaking of haircuts… S almost had his loopy curls back and really all he needed was a good thinning and some style. H teased him it was almost a bouffant with the humidity. In the end, it was too much for him I guess and before they left for NY, he got a buzz. Fortunately it’s not so short that he looks like Arian nation or anything, but definitely will be cooler for him for work in a hard hat.
