Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Still another 10 days until graduation, but D only has 2 days of school. Our church held a lovely baccalaureate service and dinner for members who are graduating and that was a very special evening. Yesterday D, H & I attended a luncheon where D was awarded her scholarship from the credit union foundation. It was very nice. The 15 students chosen were all very impressive and D felt very honored to be included. The competition was very strong and fewer than 1 in 10 applicants were chosen. Am very proud of D for her hard work and thrilled that she was recognized.

Starting tomorrow, we have a marathon 2 weeks (I’m sure you can all relate!) so I don’t know how much posting I’ll have time to do. Congrats to all of the grads.

Woody, I have tears in my eyes, and I don’t know if it’s from laughing or crying at your post. That is exactly what has kept me from crying at some of these “lasts”…the fear of absolutely and totally losing it once I get started.

theorymom, thanks for your post about your son walking. I was worried that I had missed it in the busyness of the weekend. If it has not been done already, I nominate you for Class of '09 Mom of the Year.

Why can’t I read this board without crying? 10 days til graduation around here–I should be completely cried out by then.

Something slipped by a while back and I didn’t get a chance to comment–historymom, did you chaperone the Senior Class Trip? How did that go?

Daughter’s commencement ceremony was very nice. I haven’t seen this mentioned, but every teacher that could attend did, in their robes, and after the ceremony they formed a column through which the graduates left the gym. Kids shook hands and had an opportunity to say good bye to their teachers. I have on video two very nice hugs given to my kid by two very nice teachers. Very touching!

Tonight is the Senior Awards evening. S says “everybody gets something,” so he’s not feeling particularly honored, but I’m pleased he wants to attend. His senior class is about 70 kids, so they’re all very close, and I think they’re trying to spend time together in any forum possible.

On a circle of life note, my stepdaughter had her first baby yesterday, so I’m a new grandma! I got to hear the newborn cry, and I tell you, that tore at my sentimentally vulnerable heart.

margaritas all around!!

theory–congrats–so happy to hear he walked with his class! its all gravy now…breathe…breathe…

cpeltz—love the circle of life share—congrats to your family on the new baby!

oh woody–a tear in a daughter’s eye is a total trigger for a meltdown…we sooo understand. I did similar last yr at s’s award ceremony with the baby morphing to grad video…sounds like it was beautiful and cathartic

oregon/prj/geekmom–congrats on the graduations

Congrats cpeltz! A new grandbaby, how exciting!

Cpeltz, maybe if I had an actual grandbaby I’d be very excited, but the idea of a grandbaby the same week as HS graduation would make me feel ready for the home. Congrats to you!

Mazel tov on the new baby, cpeltz!!

More mazel tov, cpeltz! That is wonderful!

Thanks for the warm wishes - it’s a nice diversion these days!

Just spent an hour at Michael’s getting scrapbooks, stickers, paper, glue, etc. for S’s Memory Book that is due TOMORROW. We won’t get home from the awards ceremony tonight until after 9:00, so he is going to have a busy night. I pity his college roommate for the all nighters that are sure to come.

^My kids would absolutely hate an assignment like that! Come to think of it, so would their mother.

A woman at work with a grade schooler married a guy whose son was a senior. A few months later, she found out that it was the tradition of the school that the moms of seniors were to make shadow boxes to display memories of the senior’s years in school. Somehow, it fell to Stepmother For Only a Few Months to do this! I was proud of her for doing the job well and with a great attitude.

cpeltz, how did I miss your post? Congratulations on the new grandbaby! The next round of hair color and margaritas is on me!

Love your location, geekmom!

I missed out on the part about a grandbaby also. Congratulations, cpeltz!

Congrats on the grand baby. So many changes in the year.

Went with D last night to the athletic banquet. Last one. Still have the board meeting to go to where she will be recognized for 3 different things and then on to graduation. Assuming she gets there. Still has 2 projects and a paper to write before Friday. I can’t believe that they are still making these kids work on so many different things. Oh well she can see the light at the end of the tunnel and still seems to be working hard on everything. Projects are supposed to be group projects but she seems to be doing all/most of it.

Congrats cpeltz-that is such wonderful news! When there is a lot going on, it can get a little crazy right? My oldest D totaled her car last week & when I got hit about the SIL and the vegan thing I wanted to scream over the phone at my mother, but I didn’t! I controlled myself! But I really wanted to say was, “I have about 75 people coming to a grad party on June 20th, & D#1 just got rear-ended & had her car totaled-do you think I care what that (rhymes with witch) eats?” Fortunately D wasn’t hurt, but she just had the same thing happen to her in February! So here we go again, looking for another car with the insurance proceeds! Actually they are paying us more than what she paid for the car…

I am doing a little craft project for one of the D’s boyfriends (a recent college grad) and for D’s HS graduation. I bought them both a shadow box frame. Got a piece of felt in a school color for each. I looked on Ebay & another spot for Murad cigarette card (you need them to be attending an OLD college) I also contacted a post card dealer I have bought from over the years. D’s will have her college Murad card (they are tiny) and also a tobacco leather of her college seal & two old postcards of the school. The boyfriend will have two old postcards (2 different views, but include a building he spent a lot of time in) and the Murad cigarette card & a tobacco silk of college seal.

If the recent graduate’s future alma mater is an old school, it is possible to locate old postcards, a Murad Cigarette card, college silk or college leather. It can be a unique gift for someone-no duplicate gifts! I have already done this for D#2, she has it on her bureau at home. Some schools have name changes though-Michigan State for example, was an Agricultural college and had a different name. Thought I would pass that on, unique gift, you do it yourself, collectible items.

Congratulations to all the new graduates!

Now will someone please help me get my son off the sofa and find a job?

Great moments in parenthood:

Tonight when I came home from work, the dirty laundry I left in the washer was clean, dry and folded. DS needed something washed for a trip and did all the available laundry. Yes, my jeans and T shirts, too.

First time he has done laundry in maybe a year.

And for the record, I did not cry at graduation, but every time I come to CC since then I blubber all over the place.
