Parents of the HS Class of 2010 and college years beyond (Part 1)

Lilmom & showmom – Congrats to your respective D’s. Enjoy, and try to survive, the next month. (showmom – yay for summer employment and having D at home for the summer).

YDS & tx5 – Hopefully your S’s “aced” the SATs! And it was so nice of them to walk RobD’s D2, carry her #2 pencils, and ensure that she got there safely. ;)

Mommusic – Maybe S could take up “Salsa on the Square?” ;)

TWINMAMA – Sorry about the basement. I’ve been there and it is no fun!

Good for Mom! When my father retired, he took up hiking the Appalachian Trail (not the whole thing at once). My younger brother went hiking with him once. When he came back he told me, “Dad about killed me, man.”

I’m sure you’ll be there in spirit. Let’s see, S and H, if your ears start burning tomorrow, I’m sure that it is all that discussion about how much they appreciate you. ;)

Just great, I was afraid of that. ;)

In sorta college related news, D2 broke the duration record for a call to DW this weekend. Of course, it was also the record for most woefulness.

 • She was at school helping with “Reunions” and graduation prep this week. Some of her friends are graduating this year and she is “so sad to see them leave!”
 • She’s afraid that she will have too much free time and what to do with it. She has become used to being in school where every minute is planned with classes, studying, exams, activities, etc. She likes to stay busy and doesn’t do well when there is unfilled, unplanned downtime. Luckily, her college has a dedicated support / activity organization just for DC interns with activities, lectures, etc. We assured her that she will find things to do in DC… my suggestion was read every book in the Library of Congress and visit every museum in DC. As, you can see, I’m not the particularly helpful parent.
 • She already misses her school and friends (see previous bullet).
 • She wanted to know if we thought that she would be welcome at a church near where she is staying in DC that is not of our particular denomination. We reassured her that it would be fine and that they would not throw out a wayward college kid. The post-church report is that the “little old ladies” were very nice to her. She did have to leave church in a hurry to meet one of her HS friends and a HS teacher for lunch… they are both in DC for the weekend.
 • She is worried about the internship and whether or not she will be able to do the work. Tomorrow is her first day on the job. We reassured her that this is the least of our concerns which are more safety related.
 • She misses her mama, home, and home cookin’
 • She has an eye infection again (during move-out, she lost the eye drops that the doctor prescribed during finals, ergh). If there was a “Miss Conjunctivitis USA” pageant I’d be rollin’ in scholarship dough! We’re hoping that some OTC eye drops will help, otherwise she will be looking for a doc-in-the-box in DC, ergh! <- I think that not feeling well is what is causing most of the other woes. Late update… she is wearing her glasses (instead of contacts) and her eyes are feeling better tonight.

Lilmom, lest I be remiss in my duties. Print it and have the kids color it between room moves…

Just wow, GSharp! Hugs to your D.

G## tell D to be particularly careful with contacts and eye infections, hopefully she wears daily contacts, if not get new cleanind/soaking solutions

G# - thanks for the MSU Eagle! How do you do that?

It hasn’t hit me that D will be so far from home yet. S is only a 2 hr drive from home. DH is looking forward to visiting her in NC and FL when her team plays in tournaments there.

I’ve been in a state of denial about D graduating. I remember being so excited when S
graduated in '10. I was so ahead of the game that the announcements went out almost a month prior. This time I’ve barely mailed them off with just 5 days to go. Perhaps, it’s because having gone through this once before, I’m not looking forward the impending emotional roller coaster. Ok, I’m done self analyzing. Time to get some stuff done!

lilmom, I’m in denial, too. When jackief mentioned that her D had her widsom teeth extracted (hope she’s doing well, nurse jackie), I realized I hadn’t even thought about that for S. With kiddo #1, there are all of these “firsts;” with the second one, it’s all the “lasts.” Profound, I know. Seems it’s always an emotional rollercoaster.

Good morning everyone! Coffee and tea ready!

good morning all…thanks for the coffee

good luck to your D gsharp on her first day of interning!

S2 starts summer classes today…

Good morning and happy Monday.

Real life has been alternating between chaos and crisis recently, so I’m afraid I too far out of the loop to send any specific greetings out y’all. In the midst of it all, I find myself saying, “I need to check-in on CC. I miss those folks; they’re my ‘normal’ now, my comfort zone.”

Alas, I don’t see a return to normal until after Sunday’s commencement. House guests, graduation activities, my niece’s condition, work, my high-maintenance dad… Calgon, take me away.

Until it’s over, know I’m here in spirit, lurking the days away. “See” you next week. :)

Good morning, all.

Thought I’d start off this Monday morning by becoming a CC senior, but somehow I passed that milestone over the weekend without noticing.

Both my COLLEGE students will finish their work/papers/exams today. D has her heart set on an apartment she saw Friday, so a little PVC aimed toward Minneapolis wouldn’t hurt.

TWINMAMA - we also had a dry basement when we moved into our house, and over the years it got wetter and wetter, till we had to do a major French drain/sump pump project last summer. Of course, our house is 113 years old, and the basement floor was probably originally dirt, and the water always seemed to come up through the floor, rather than from the walls or cracks or whatever. In any event, it is no fun. Hope Servicemaster gets it all dried out, and you can sort your stuff and move on quickly.

G# - Hope your daughter is feeling better very soon. Like you, I have no worries about her being able to do the job - she will just need to find that out for herself.

DB - Sending you strength, patience, and hopes that you can actually enjoy some of the moments. We’ll be thinking of you.

I can’t believe I had to drag my winter jacket out this morning - it’s 50 degrees and grey and rainy. YUCK. Nevertheless, have a great Monday, everyone. Only three days till I see my kiddos.:cool::cool:

good morning. D has her paper done, one final today, and two on Wed. And then flies home on Thurs  but for only a week until she returns to school where she still has no job…

Thanks for asking psychmom, D2 is doing ok with the lack of wisdom, would probably be better if she was staying home and resting, but is doing a lot of running around for a senior scavenger hunt her class does. It is pretty fun, they need to take pictures reinacting album covers (no gwar) finding historical things in town, eating things (I mentioned the poutine from round one) etc. Anyway, she still has swelling and bruising but should be pretty presentable by graduation on Sat.

Good morning all!

Got to see S last night for a few hours…the annual youth group spaghetti dinner/talent show was being held. He enjoyed seeing some of his younger friends who are now seniors in HS, and he was also useful as a techie/sound man as he knows how this thing runs.

He only has 3 exams this week, 2 Tuesday & 1 Wednesday, so that sounds pretty good. Said his computer graphics project was coming along better since he figured out the geometry of it. Now it’s just shading & fine tuning.

Wishing a great day to all. We got news over the weekend that a new drug worked on my father’s a-fib so he can get out of the hosp. & back to the rehab place. VERY good news. :)

Good morning. Up early due to not sleeping. Insomnia for the first time in awhile. I slept wonderfully on Saturday night so I don’t really know what is going on.

I’ve got a paper due tomorrow, a paper due Thursday, and my first exam all this week. I now understand why friends who are on quarters complain so much about their work. This week means I am halfway through my Humanities class!

High of 94 today and summer hasn’t even started yet. Kill me now.

waving to everyone Today is Monday after vacation. yuck. We spent the week on a cruise and had so much fun !

I quickly read through all the posts…

Momof2inma: Yeah for the new frig ! I always like new appliances.

Hope everyone had fun & safe Memorial Day weekends.

P56: I saw a picture of the table. Great job ! happy belated 30th Anniversary !

G#: I was in the Atlanta airport Sunday afternoon May 27th. I found myself looking around, wondering if G# was there…

Psych mom: Glad your D arrived safely!

D15 had her 15th birthday Saturday. sometime this week she plans to take the written test to get her driver’s permit. yikes.

twin mama: Our basement suddenly started leaking this year too.

welcome back checkers!!! hope you had a great time

good luck on papers and exam mdem

pvc aimed at alice’s D

I woke up this morning as a mother of 2 high school graduates.

I am now recovering from the whirlwind of Senior activities: Awards/Scholarships/Prom and Graduation. The weather cooperated with all but the graduation. S is currently sleeping after returning home from the Up All Night party. I don’t expect to see him until late afternoon. ;)

Good Luck to all those still working on papers and exams.

DB - sending virtual “Calgon” to help you through this week

G# - Hope D2 feels better soon. My D was the same pile of nerves before starting her internship, but it all worked out fine. ;)

Thanks for all of your support regarding our wet basement! The standing water is gone (thanks, Servicemaster!) but the big fans are still blowing non-stop to dry things out. We’ll probably put in some sort of pump to keep this from happening again. DH just called- our insurance will cover all but our $1000 deductible, including replacing the carpet. Guess it could have been worse, but still not much fun to deal with!! :(

Good morning! Happy Monday!

Welcome home to the travelers! My condolences to the wet basement. We don’t have a basement, but once, while we were on vacation (and our dog was boarded), our toilet sprang a leak and we had water damage throughout the house. It was not fun.

D1 and grandma reported from London that they made it, they watched some of the “floatilla” (but missed the Queen), took the tube by themselves and they only have wifi in the Hotel Lobby, so there won’t be a lot of reports.

Just sayin’ hi to keep us off the second page. Someone’s gotta do it.

LOL One of our hobbies is keeping this thread off the second page.

S is on his way home from school. Hurray! I’m trying to make a presentable dinner for when he arrives. Not sure I’m quite ready to have dorm mountain reassemble itself, probably in the living room. But I can’t WAIT to hug S!

lilmom - I’m in the same boat. S is less than 2 hours away while D will be 6 hours away. I’m behind on all of her stuff too. Poor second (and in our case, middle) child!! I already feel bad for S2 because he will be left to witness my emotional meltdown when his siblings are both gone. And he will be smothered as a result.
