Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Oh, I have BWRK! :D

It’s too early yet (and with no coffee) for me to ponder the GSRK puzzle.

Thanks to everyone who provided thoughts about AP Chemistry and AP Biology.

I get to play a little photographer this week, taking pictures of the teachers, students and classrooms that received Ed Foundation grants for things like tech equipment. I got to choose which math/science classroom, so of course I chose the one with the AP Calc teacher who’s writing S’s LOR next year. The pictures will be used at the slide show during our big Tribute to the Stars (teacher awards) annual fundraising auction/dinner in May.

Okay, the GSRK answer posted WHILE I was writing my post above. I’m not THAT out of it.

I’m obviously still asleep. We need an asleep smilie.

I think I AM that out of it!

Good morning, all. More snow today! Anyone else as tired of winter as I am?

DougBetsy - haven’t looked at the 2013 acceptance thread in awhile - glad to see it’s a nice range of schools being discussed.

Youdon’tsay - glad your S’s team got a new baseball coach. Hope he manages to do something with the team - it would be nice to have a winning season, wouldn’t it?

Jackief - you’re so lucky that spring sports don’t start practicing until the end of March. D pretty much goes straight from one sport to the other (in fact, practices have even overlapped on occasion). She’s tried to get to both, but she has too many other commitments to make that possible most of the time.

FindAPlace - have fun with your camera.

Youdon’tsay - and asleep smilie? LOL.

I think we’ll have a much better season than the previous two. We’ve started a booster club this year and had a big field workday last weekend (the two previous coaches had let the grounds fall into disrepair). The new coach really has us energized; all we needed was someone to ask!

And, the guy made a bold move: He’s not fielding a JV team this year in order to concentrate on the varsity squad. That’s kind of a bummer, to not be able to train kids up for their shot at varsity, but he’s rostering a HUGE varsity team so underclassmen will still get experience, just not as much playing time.

LIMOM, I used to belong to a board that had a great array of smilies, including one of a smilie in a nightgown and sleephat walking dragging a blankey and carrying a cup of steaming coffee.

LIMom, I’m so deathly sick of winter. I can really understand why some people retire to warmer climes.

D2 just got her report card. 95.78 average. B- in math. I’m so relieved. She can be so incredibly erratic.

zm – that’s a great average! Congrats to D2!

I wish we would get a little of that eastern snow out this way. We have had very little and it’s stgrange. Are we in an El Nino or La Nina or something? However,we do have the distinction of having some of the country’s dirtiest air – so thick you could cut it with a knife – disgusting. Don’t drive! Don’t burn! Don’t exercise! Don’t go outside! Don’t BREATHE! :roll eyes:

Youdon’tsay:

DS played HS baseball as well - and I remember well the tension of those “will he make the team” days. Congratulations to your son on making it through.

It sounds like the new coach certainly has a vision for turning the program around. Not sure I agree with cutting out the JV team since I am a big believer in game time but it is difficult to judge from here. Getting the field in shape is a great first step - our program had a wonderful field, better than some college fields (like the one my son plays on now) and the players, by doing most of the work themselves, had a real pride of ownership.

One suggestion - now that cuts have been made, gather up a group of parents and go to the coach, asking if there is anything else you can do - e.g. would it help if there were another work day or does he have a list of nice to haves?

He may say no - but I know with our program we put together a group of the parents and knocked out a long list of do its every season (e.g. painting the bleachers, putting out new garbage cans, hauling away piles of debris to the dump, electrical repairs (we had an electrician dad), etc.

I’ll PM you scualum!

D just called. She got her final exam scores, so even though we don’t have the report card yet, it looks like she got 3 As and 4 Bs. So her average for this semester will be 3.43 unweighted and 4.14 weighted. This was also her average last semester.

I was hoping for an A in chem, but I am pretty happy with this.

My S has a field trip today with his AP English class. They are going to see the following play, which sounds like a good one for a bunch of SoCal kids.

Taking Over

OBIE Award-winning solo artist Danny Hoch returns to Center Theatre Group with his riveting new work, Taking Over, a show that brings to vivid life the residents of his Brooklyn neighborhood. In rapidly changing Williamsburg, the melting pot is boiling over with strained ethnic relations and economic tensions—and the threat of gentrification, which threatens to crush the city’s diversity. Hoch masterfully depicts this community in transition with compassionate and hilarious results.

The AP English teacher also gives a few bonus points if students present ticket stubs for attending such movies as Milk, Frost and Nixon, Valkyrie, and Definace (my S went to the latter two and enjoyed them both. A bit different than the typical fare for the average teenager.

FindAPlace - so nice that your S’s teacher is trying to make the class more interesting/appealing to the students. That play sounds very interesting. Williamsburg is an cool part of Brooklyn. We discovered the gentrified section a few summers ago, and enjoy checking out the shops and sampling the restaurants. I’ve never heard of the play, but will have to see if it’s playing in the city.

zoosermom & Queen’s Mom - congrats on your D’s grades. My D said grades had to be submitted by either yesterday afternoon or this afternoon, so she probably won’t be getting her report card until next week. I’m hoping for no surprises
lol.

zoosermom - I feel exactly the same way! The snow is just getting on my nerves at this point. It all finally melted yesterday, and yesterday’s gorgeous weather gave me hope that this snow wouldn’t materialize - but I was wrong! It’s coming down like crazy!

BengalMom - how awful about the poor air quality - we’re usually ok here, except on some of those hot and humid summer days. BTW, feel free to help yourself to our eastern snow - most of us would be happy to share.

Youdon’tsay - that smilie sounds very cute.

That’s all I ever hope for. This is the first time we didn’t get any from her. I always sit her down the night before and offer amnesty if she warns me ahead. She never does. Sigh.

oooo.i like that amnesty
maybe i’ll do that
i’m nervous about this one

So far, I haven’t had to worry about surprises, so if one does occur, it would be a true surprise.

zoosermom - glad this time all was well.

Thanks LIMom, I’m so glad and relieved as well. This is the kid who scored lower this year than her freshman PSAT because she wasn’t “in the mood” to take the test. Needless to say, I’m not using any freebies with either the ACT or SAT.

Good luck Rodney! I’m hoping yours will bring the “A” game, too.

Yeah, I got me one of those too.

I’ve heard there are medications for that.

For the parents, I mean.
