I thought of this thread when I saw this:

[Tips for Thawing Your Teen’s Cold Shoulder - Parenting Secrets with Dr. Michele Borba : Blogs at iVillage.com](http://micheleborba.ivillage.com/parenting/archives/2009/02/tips-for-thawing-your-teens-co.html?par=today,pp)

zm and qm, That’s wonderful news about the report cards. S got his last week and it was also good news. Phew.

I have a sort of strange request. This is our first time through this. I’m not looking for someone to help with S’s applications or anything like that. What I am looking for maybe a website or person I can share the basics of S’s info with and see what they think of his odds for admission/merit aid. I read Collegeview, the schools common data set and here. I’m just getting more confused. I don’t feel comfortable starting a thread with that info. and asking for input. I’m more than willing to pay someone a fee. Although a free website would be great!

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Given that I had to drive out to Glen Cove today and dh is out of town so I am in charge of shoveling - I sure am! (Actually the drive wasn’t too bad.)

pugmadkate, how about this one:

https://www.collegedata.com/cs/search/college/college_search_tmpl.jhtml

it allows you to input your son’s data and they will say if it’s a “good bet” “maybe” or “reach”.

I can’t vouch for accuracy.

pugmadkate, the people who used to sponsor this discussion board had a service like this and it got good reviews from people who post here frequently enough that they are not plants. I don’t have a direct link to it, I tried going up out of the discussion area here and couldn’t find it. Someone can probably help out or if not try searching around maybe in the admissions subforum.

I am not minding winter too much this year. Besides the fact that we have done much less skiing to save $$, and the ice storm and power outages, it hasn’t been too bad  I think it is because we haven’t had as much bitter bitter cold, and the girls have escaped subzero windchills during their races for the most part.

But I am looking forward to the beach!

Not sure if they are still doing it, but here’s the link. It has a 2004 date: [What Are My College Admissions Chances](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/press/release-statseval.htm)

This thread talks about some inexpensive services. Is College Karma associated with CC? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/645415-admissions-counselor.html

I can answer my own question. This is from the College Karma website: “College Karma co-directors Dave Berry and Sally Rubenstone”
[College Counseling Services](http://www.collegekarma.com/college_counseling/college_counseling.htm)

yes College Karma is the old cc people. I have read many reviews by frequent posters who thought they got their money’s worth. If you do use them, or someone else pugmadkate, please give us a review!

(eta- I think the cost used to be around $90, it is now $150)

When it comes to grades and test scores, nothing comes as a surprise from our S. Why? Because he has a very good inner sense and can self assess with a high degree of accuracy.

He came out of the AP exams (first time he ever took any) last spring and announced that he thought he scored 5,5,4. Darned if he wasn’t right, as per usual. He can’t understand why everyone can’t do it. He doesn’t posture or hide either if the result is less than stellar. To him, it’s just what it is and we move on.

Wish he had the same sense in picking lottery numbers!

My D thought she failed every single test she ever took. ;)

Queen’s Mom - awwww! Your poor D.

FindAPlace - my D is similar - though she’s way better at figuring out school exams than things like SATs, ACTs, and other standardized tests.

The lottery ticket thing would be a nice bonus.

I’ve heard good things from people who’ve used Dave Berry.

My younger son came out of the World History AP last years saying he’d gotten a 1 or 2. Imagine my surprise when he had a 5! His AP teacher didn’t love him and they were all a bit blown away by the DBQ essay (on Olympic history which no one knew anything about), but apparently he was able to fool the readers and he’s always been very good at multiple choice.

I agree, I’ve heard no complaints about Dave Berry here.

OMG! My son said the most ridiculous thing to me tonight on the way home from school:

“I’m thinking about taking mulitvariable calculus next year.”

I about drove off the road I laughed so hard. This is the kid who is scraping by in BC Cal with a 71! I don’t know why he would WANT to take multi. Oh, and then he tells me how much he is loving his liberal arts elective and that he might be turning into a “liberal arts person,” even though he’s always thought of himself as a math-science guy. So what’s the deal with taking multi then if he’s becoming a liberal arts person???

This kid cracks me up. He’s become so funny. You never know what you’ll get. I’m glad I’ve been listening when people hear have said that they change so much from junior to senior year. The good news is he doesn’t think we need to scrap his college list; he thinks the small LACs he’s looking at are still the best fit.

YDS:

All I can say is my Sr math guy (H) and Jr math guy (S) have stated there is a beauty to calculus.

Should I be jealous? :)

Well, if he thought it was beautiful that would be one thing, but just last week he was complaining that he didn’t see the point of calculus. :)

Thank you for the suggestions. If I do use one of them, I will certainly let put up a review.

S2 is a junior and is doing very well this year with school, his ECs, and his social life. He has a new quiet confidence and has developed a sound work ethic that was not there the last couple of years (though his grades were good). He attributes it to a summer program he attended at the University of Chicago that worked his butt off, but excited him academically in a way I had never seen before. He was actually sad when it was over. He is a liberal arts guy who likes the law, but jumped into AP Calc and is an A student. In the past he typically disliked math, but he said the Chicago program showed him how important it was to be an educated person. I am still amazed at this transformation. He is even starting to take this college search thing seriously.

Yes, Chicago will do that for you.
