Good luck to all SAT test takers next Saturday! My D has some big exams this week so she says she will only have time to prep for the SAT on Friday. I’ll be happy if she puts in 3 hrs of prep, gets at least 6 hrs of sleep the night before, and eats a bit of breakfast on the morning of the test. And remembers to take her calculator!

Yes, good luck to the SAT-takers. Dual-enrollment students at our state university have midterms most of this week.

FAP, You go!

DougBetsy, You are making it very difficult to hold the line here about waiting for a new dog!

My S is taking the SAT on Saturday as well. He has not prepped at all, other than having taken the PSAT twice. He says, “Mom, you always told me that you can’t study for standardized testing. This test will simply show were I am and that will help me find a college that is a good match, right?” I cannot believe this kid has the nerve to repeat back to me exactly what I’ve said to him! Lol.

My conversations with D now are focused on allaying her anxieties and shifting the focus from ‘getting in’ to ‘finding the right colleges’.

pnk, how dare your son listen to you! ;)

Youdon’tsay - I was going to sat that!

Good luck to all the Sat. SAT takers! Don’t forget extra batteries, and maybe even an extra calculator! LOL

pugmadkate:

LOL! Good to know he’s remembering the important stuff.

Here’s good vibes to all the S and D of '10 who are taking the SAT on Saturday, especially the first timers (like my S.) Not that it’s so meaningful since the sample size is small and non-random, but my H said the five go-getters he interviewed for full scholarships at USC all took SAT first time in March and then a second slug at it in May.

S2 is taking the SAT (first-timer) on Saturday. He did some practice tests in the CB’s Blue Book and feels ready to roll. Crossing our fingers for one and done!

S1 also took his first SAT in March of junior year. It’s a good time to do it before APs take over one’s spare time, but gives a student time to retake before senior year to improve the score.

Another Saturday first-time SAT-taker mom here. I wish everyone’s kid a great night’s sleep, extra batteries, granola bars for the breaks, a good breakfast beforehand, and no mis-bubbling!

And remind the kids to fill in the bubbles of the Student-Produced Reponses in the math section!!!
(This is a BTDT Public Service Announcement.)

BTDT … Been There, Done That?

Yup! Exactly!

CountingDown - you just reminded me - I don’t think I ever mentioned this, but my D told me that she left out one response on the math portion of the SAT in January (when her calculator stopped working), and when I got her score report back, it said she didn’t omit any answers, and that she got two wrong. Not sure whether I want them to check it manually or not - how much difference would it make if she had one wrong and one omit vs. two wrong and one omit compared to two wrong an no omits? So confusing! She got a good score on that section, so I just left it alone and haven’t even mentioned it to her - but there’s definitely a mistake - unless she ended up bubbling a response without realizing it - but that doesn’t sound like her.

I don’t have much to add today (what a shock) but I’ll add my well wishes to the Sat test takers. Several of D’s friends are taking it, haven’t heard that much studying has happened. First time for all of them.

Glad to hear that Batman and his new family are settling in.

I also see that LIMOM is within 100 posts of Senior Member status :)

S. will be taking the SAT next Saturday also – his second shot at it. He finally got around to taking a practice test today out of the blue book with not very happy results.

I don’t understand why they give a score range rather than a definite score!? When you take the practice online test, you receive exact scores. His score range for the writing section was 110 points – that’s a big spread and not really helpful at all.

He did not do nearly as well as he had hoped when he took the SAT in Jan. If this one turns out the same, he’s done with SAT I, unless he changes his mind over the summer. He did SO much better on the ACT, it’s like they aren’t even from the same person. :)

Ds just always used the avg. If the range is 660-760, then he used 710.

BengalMom: The reason is that the exact combination of test booklets was never administered as an actual test. At least that is my understanding of their explanation. In the blue book there are I think two tests that were actual past tests. Even for the online tests, it are only some of them that were actual past tests. The others are just mix-n-match combinations of questions/booklets. And so they don’t really have a comparison group of actual test takers to give you an exact score. I hope that make sense. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about the exact score estimates. The practice tests are only useful if the student goes over the questions after taking them and analyzes the questions he/she got wrong and figures out what the traps are that he/she falls into.

Thanks, vicariousparent. It sounds about as illogical as some of the other info that comes out of CB. ![]()
S will go over the problems he missed this week, but I’m not sure that will help him enough. I just think the SAT is not the best test for him (at least for reporting to colleges), and this worries me for how he may do on the SAT IIs in May. Getting him to study for standardized tests is difficult to say the least.

SAT IIs are completely different tests, BengalMom, so try not to worry about those. As long as he studies, he should be fine. And I hate those score ranges too! I understand why they’re there, but they still annoy me.

jackief - I’ll be at work all day today, so I won’t won’t be adding much to my post count. Maybe tonight.

Here we go again…choosing classes for Senior year. D is still not happy with her schedule and wants to change it. Her father convinced her that she should take AB for an easier class since she is taking 4 APs. Now she wants to drop AP Euro and take a non-weighted elective and switch into BC.

I told her to do whatever she wants, but my H is horrified. Advice and insight appreciated…
