S just got back from the SAT a little while ago, saying no more than “it was fine”. He got a good night’s sleep and I made him breakfast before he went, but he looks exhausted. These sorts of tests are not his thing at all (unlike his big sister, who was a ‘one and done’), so we’ll see how it turns out…

Booklady, I hope it went well for your S and that he is “one and done.” We were hoping for that with S’s 2&3, but alas, they will re-test. We also have a situation with child #1 being the kind who was “one and done.” These tests are a marathon.

Yay for all today’s test-takers - glad they got that one out of the way.

Booklady - sorry your S looks exhausted - but those tests are so long that it’s understandable.

Hope it’s one and done for them all!

Yes, wouldn’t that be nice? S is also going to take the ACT in 3 weeks, so perhaps it will be a ‘two and done’ for him instead. ;)

S2 is back, too. First thing he said: “I did really well on earning myself 600 points.” (Name, rank, serial number, etc.) Was not as happy with math as he would have liked (omitted 1-2, had two others that were difficult) and said “I have no idea” how he did. Sounded like there were no issues with CR and W and had time to get through everything.

We’ll see how it comes out. Right now he’s on the sofa watching the ACC tournament, unless he has drifted off to sleep.

He laid his calc, ID, ticket and pencils on the kitchen table last night without my prompting. I saw them on my way to bed and it startled me so much I couldn’t get to sleep! :D

I just received a text from my D who was also taking the SAT Reasoning test (I was getting a little worried!). When I asked how it went, she texted “Fine. We’ll see.” I guess that’s pretty positive.

Exactly mathmom, thats what makes it so silly. I am sure she would have to work harder at AP Statistics than BC Calculus. And it isn’t as though should could have done BC this year. This is a new school for her and she was already jumping half a level when she went to AB this year. Her old school was on the more conventional track where you decide in senior year to do AB or BC.

zoosermom: Nice to learn that your D is enjoying IB Psych.

Ah well, now I gotta go pick up my D from the SAT (she doesn’t drive yet). This is her second and hopefully last time. And then, off we fly to New York for our college tours. Tomorrow will be Princeton…the tour only, no info session on Sundays.

CDown:

Our S made the same “I’m sure to get 600 points” joke at the dinner table last evening.

Vparent:

Ah ha, switching schools, that explains it. From everything else I’ve read from you, it had seemed your D would have stretched for BC last year. I love to see the girls doing this. For some reason, and my H the math prof can’t explain it, in academic circles, there are more women in the sciences than in math. In fact, H’s college tried to offer a woman a tenure track position, but unless her boyfriend secures a place in a nearby college, it’s not happening. Thus they will remain with just two women on faculty.

Cmom:

Yes, even on the phone, S’s usual answer when things go well or amazingly well, it’s “Fine.” I have no idea where he picked up this economy with words but it wasn’t from me!

Even though S just got his driver’s license this week, I did him the courtesy of being his chaufeur this morning. Hopefully he’ll be more expansive when we ask him how he did, since he’s usually spot on. After taking his first set of AP exams last year, he predicted scores of 5,5, and 4 and he was correct.

Here’s crossing fingers he can boost that CR score from what he might expect from the PSAT. I don’t expect a call for another hour or so.

vicarious, enjoy Princeton! It’s my alma mater, and whatever else you and D think about it, I know you’ll enjoy walking around campus - it’s very beautiful.

Congrats and well wishes to all of your test takers today! May you all have scores that will put you in the “One and done” crowd

CD I am certain your S did admirably.

LIMom
isn’t your D taking them again soon?

Have a great time on all those spring break visits too you all

I took the SAT today as well–but no speculation on how well I did, as much as my mother complains. Every time I take a test, she asks, “How did you do?” And my answer is ALWAYS, “I don’t know!” Sometimes I really don’t know, sometimes I have a hunch, but either way it would be jinxing to say it aloud. ;)

Also, I am just overwhelmed by how lucky I am to have such loving parents. Since I saw my mom running the Amherst FA calculator last night with our new taxes, I asked her how it went–and she told me not to worry, that I would almost certainly get into a top 25 LAC or URochester (my “safety”), and that they would find a way to pay for everything without me taking out ANY undergrad loans. o.0 The over-optimism (to my ultra-fiscal-conservative ears) is not new, but the debt promise was! My mom does the taxes by hand every year and we are a frugal family; I know that she really means it about being able to pay for my education, but oh, I feel terrible taking advantage of their generosity too.

Speaking of which–would the CC parents consider Rochester a valid safety for me? Maybe I am being too conservative. I had a strong interview there last summer. Stats: 228 PSAT, 800/760 SAT IIs, 4.0UW GPA with “most rigorous” (but not really the most rigorous schedule, since I’ve chosen to take 4 years of Band) courses including 6 APs at a competitive public school. TASP finalist so I assume someone liked my essays. I am not trying to brag, at all; it just seems like admissions is SO competitive these days and I will need a generous (full-need with mostly grants) package from UR. Thoughts?

I don’t know anything about Rochester, but I just wanted to say that you sound like a terrific young woman and I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully wherever you wind up for college. I think you’ll have lots of choices come admission time!

S is now home from the SAT. He thinks he did reasonably well with only one question unanswered. When I asked him how he thought he did on the Indian writer question, he just stared and me and ask, “Now how did YOU know that was on there?” So I fessed up and said some kids from early time zones were chattering about it on CC.

We had a funny incident to show that, indeed, he did a complete brain dump for the test. He called me when I was done and I said I’d meet him and his two friends at F’s Bakery, one half block up R Blvd from the HS test site, on the left hand side of the street, same as the HS. I get there, no boys. I had no cell phone since I forgot to charge it last night. So I stroll up and down the street until I find a pay phone by the HS. I called the house (S doesn’t always feel the cell in vibrate mode) to find out from H that they were at another bakery (actually just a doughnut shop) two blocks further up the street.

So, S thought I said Frank’s rather than Fred’s Bakery, was not reading the signs (they said the tinted window didn’t let them see inside that it was a bakery) and figured that I must have gotten the name, direction and location of the bakery wrong.

:) Needless to say, after using up that many brain cells on the test, I drove us home.

Keilexandra–Rochester’s admit rate was 41% 2007 and here are their mid-50% score ranges:
SAT Critical Reading 25th-75th percentile range: 600-700
SAT Math 25th-75th percentile range: 630-720
One (rough) rule of thumb that I read on CC that we’re using is that if the admit rate is above 40% and the student is in the top 25% of the score ranges, it can be considered a safety. So according to that rule of thumb, it’s a borderline safety for you. But this is just based on scores and we know other things matter, including your great GPA.

Keep in mind that others are much more conservative when labeling a safety. The best thing to do would be to find out how kids at your school have done applying to Rochester. Do you have Naviance?

Good luck to you!

FindAPlace - good call on you driving home - the kids are drained after those tests - understandably so. But glad your S thinks he did reasonably well.

Keilexandra - U of Rochester is supposed to be a really good school, and I think it should be a safety for you - though it is very competitive. My D’s GC didn’t note it as a safety for her, and I thought it was, so I don’t want to give you the wrong info - it’s just so hard to tell these days. And I’m very happy for you - that your parents seem to be working things out for you - that’s excellent.

History - Hi!
Thanks for asking, but I’m not sure whether my D will be retaking the SAT. Her GC advised against it and told her to concentrate on the June ACT - She still doesn’t know what she wants to do, but I suspect she’ll retake the SAT in May. I seriously doubt she’ll study for either - but hopefully, she’ll at least look over her old tests to see where she went wrong!

Booklady - my D is very eager to visit Princeton. We’re hoping to make it there next month.

VP - which other schools will you be visiting?

My 8th grader took the SAT this morning for John Hopkins along with a number of friends; it is so funny to see them after the test vs. those kids that took them for “real.” They didn’t get out until 1:10 after walking in at 8am; they got a late start, but boy that is one draining test! It was interesting to hear them talking about their impressions of the SAT vs. ACT (they were surprised there was no Science & they thought the math was easier…I think that might just be because they’re a year farther along in math) but they were a hoot talking about the essay.

So glad my older DD had to postpone from todays test to May 2nd. She’s been sick all week, and managed to get 14 hours of sleep last night thanks to Nyquil; she seems almost back to normal now. I can’t imagine how she would have fared with a 5 hour test and a cough :)

14 hours of sleep? Nyquil or not-has your D had a mono test?

My D diagnosed with MONO this week. Slept the week away.
But she insisted on taking the SAT today.

Thinking her dogged determination is good Karma for a good score. And, interesting strategy for others…she was way too tired to be worried! Stay tuned.

Even though he went to bed early last night, S is now lying on the floor with his arms encircling one of the dogs. I expect the both of them to take a needed mid-day snooze momentarily.

Unless he needs to re-take SAT or wants to take ACT, I told S he wouldn’t have to take a test of that length again until something like GRE, MCAT, LSAT. I noted the bar/board/accountancy tests are longer. He just rolled his eyes at me.

RobD - so glad your older D had already postponed her test until May - that worked out well for her. It’s so hard taking that test when you’re not feeling well - that happened to my D back in December and said she was ok when it started, but about 1/3 of the way into the test, she started coughing non-stop. I’m sure it was hard for her, and distracting for the other kids in the room as well.

Beltwaymom - sorry to hear about your D and the mono - I hope she has a speedy recovery! What a time to get sick, but I hear that’s very common junior year.

FAP - I haven’t even mentioned those possible future exams to D…lol.

Glad to hear that the test went so well for so many of your 2010 kids. No test here - DD decided to focus on the ACT for now as she did much better in the practice tests for it. Her turn comes in a few weeks…

We all tend to beat up on our GCs on this thread - so I thought I would pay a compliment to ours. They have, without telling anyone, implemented a new process - the results of which just arrived in the mail. With a form to sign off on for DD’s classes next year we got 1) a graduation checklist showing what remains to be done and 2) a copy of DD transcript so that we can check it for errors. They certainly didn’t do this for my 2008 DS - but I think it is an excellent idea. Hurray for DD’s GC!!!
