Hi! I’m Beth, the parent of a Junior S. He took the SAT this morning also. He said it was ‘OK’. Seemed like the essay went fairly well but he didn’t cover the whole two pages with content. He left 2 questions blank. 1 of them was in the grid-in math. He knew that it was a free guess but had no clue how to do it or even make an educated guess. He did well on the PSAT but the practice test score was well below the ‘predicted SAT’. It will be interesting to see the score in a few weeks.

Welcome Beth/stockmom! I hope we hear more from you on your son’s interest and college progress! Good luck to him and the others who took the SAT today. When are the scores scheduled to come out?

The friend of my D’s with all the snafus this morning said the test went well. I did an online faux pas by posting a (funny to me at the time) comment to her mom when mom kept posting one after another of the things D forgot/went wrong today. I am sorry I did it but as a detached observer it was funny! (sorry) I hope I can patch things up with them and I really am glad the girl seemed to calm down for the test.

According to CB, the scores are supposed to be out April 7th, which for us is during spring break.

thank you Booklady
(this is really my penance post)

interesting that it is after the ACT date. Who is taking that? My D is as are several of her friends.

I should also say hi to beltway mom who I may have missed an intro post but with 9 total posts must be new so HI

scualum:

I’ll give a shout out to our GC as well. She had a seminar this week on how to interpret your student’s transcript. I’ve never seen that offered before.

On the other hand, I believe the counselor’s in general had an idea that some of their positions might be on the budget cutting block, which they were but these were held in abeyance, for now.

I was very happy back in January when our Education Foundation was able to find a community member to provide a directed donation for five new PCs for the college and career center. I couldn’t believe how old the ones they were using, and for kids who don’t have them at home to use, they need to have access at the HS. When I think of how much ours are getting a workout thus far in the college process … The college and career counselor was thrilled.

Yes, I forgot to welcome beltway mom too - so, it’s very nice to meet you. And welcome to you too, Beth (AKA stockmom123).

scualum - yay for having a great GC. We love D’s GC as well. We also got a copy of her transcript to check for errors - looked fine to me.

jackief - my D will be taking her second ACT in June. April was just not a good month for that - auditions, sports, college visits - I know June is crazy too, but I think the ACT is the week after the SAT IIs. At least in June, all that stuff will be over. Glad your D’s friend calmed down and did well on the test, and I’m sure the mom will get over it once she’s had a chance to relax - I’m sure nothing you said was that bad.

Hi Beth, nice to meet you!

Jackie, my D is taking the April ACT also

S is taking the April ACT as well. Whichever test he does better on he’ll probably retake in June.

And welcome to the new posters! (We need all the help we can get to overtake those '09ers. ;))

Welcome to stockmom123 and beltwaymom!!

scualum, how nice that you got a transcript to look over. Great idea. That reminds me that I better stop by the school soon and check out S’s.

S’s GC is an awesome woman, and I don’t know how she handles everything she does. We really like her, and I just wish that we could see her more, and that she had more time to spend with S. Those GCs are SO overworked – how can they each keep track of hundreds of students, along with their other responsibilities, and problems with students that come up? I think I would probably have a daily meltdown in that position.

FindAPlace: I’m not allowed to discuss SAT questions yet, I don’t think, but I really enjoyed reading the “Indian writer” passage!

My school does not have Naviance, unfortunately. We can’t afford it (I presume). I had heard that the classic rule of thumb was >50% admit rate, for which Rochester does not qualify; and it’s a very good school, so I’m nervous.

After a particularly hard school week of sleep-deprivation, I’ve slept 13 hours straight without any kind of sleep aid or illness; 12 hours is routine for me on the weekends. So 14 hours isn’t -necessarily- cause for concern; it depends on one’s individual habits.

And greetings to the newcomers! I’m Keix/Keil/Keilexandra, the lone junior (student, not parent) frequenting this thread, I believe.

Keix:

My S went to bed last night at 8 pm, asking to being excused from his chore of washing dishes. My H said, “So soon?” I reminded him SAT was today and he said, “Oh, yes.” S will get a nice sleep in tomorrow and is thrilled to do no linear algebra today.

Question to you: If my S doesn’t score as he’d liked on the SAT, he figures to take it again in May, right before he launches into the APs (which he did well with last year.) Of course, the ACT is an option, too late to sign up for the April one, I see. The next offering is in June (the week before he takes the last two SAT II subject tests, in US History and Physics, to pair with his AP classes) and, I’m guessing, in early September, since they did that in '08. As a student, do you think the September ACT, if he wants to do it, would be the better time?

D is taking the SATs tomorrow. I told her to go to be a half hour ago, but she’s vegging playing video games with her sister.

FindAPlace - I know you weren’t asking me, as I’m just another parent, but I think the timing varies from student to student.
I can’t see how my D can possibly fit a test in once September rolls around, so that’s why she’ll be taking the ACT in June - but darn, I think I had the test dates reversed. I was really hoping the ACT would follow the SATIIs, and not the other way around. Oh, well.

Good luck to your D tomorrow, Queen’s Mom.

FindAPlace, I think Sept. ACT would be fine–at least for me, school doesn’t really do much in the first few weeks of September. Personally the October SAT sounds like a really bad date because it’s right when school starts piling on homework, and for seniors also when they should be working on applications.

If I don’t score well on this SAT, I plan to retake in June, since I’m done with SAT IIs and I want to concentrate on APs in May.

LIMOMOF2:

No harm, no foul for chiming in. I just decided to ask Keix from her perspective, since she’s a student.

We’re trying to avoid testing for our S during sr year in the fall (which is really the only time for seniors, isn’t it) because his water polo season can be pretty intense. Still, a test date in mid-September doesn’t seem nearly as bad as one in October (shudder.)

We’re happy the SAT II’s in June follow the May APs since S will be testing for the same subjects he’s taking as APs this year. I’d like to say this was planned that way but then I’d turn into the female version of Pinocchio.

Qmom:

Where is there SAT testing TOMORROW, a Sunday?

^ Sunday testing is for students with religious objections to testing on Saturday–in this case I believe QMom’s D is Jewish?

Yup, it’s us Jews and the Seventh Day Adventists, all testing on Sunday.

good luck to QM’s D and any others testing tomorrow!

FAP- has he taken the ACT yet? If so, and if he feels like taking in June, then go for it. If he is not familiar with the test, you might want to bypass the June date and wait. however, because of the reporting structure from ACT, he could always take it without any repercussions, except the $46 lighter wallet.

October is actually a little late for testing if you are applying to early action or rolling admissions schools. Some schools have a Nov. 15 app deadline for consideration for some scholarships.
