Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Would you please elaborate?

Do we have to wait until spring? All these tests are causing tons of stress in the household:)

Acutally, I’m hoping that once the acceptances are in next year around this time, it might be kind of fun going through the decision process to pick and chose ā€œthe one.ā€

What I’m decidedly not looking forward to is the planning, packing and moving that comes after.

zm- it was just my first impression, I have not visited Colgate and of course I don’t know your D, so I can be very wrong.

My idea of Colgate is kind of a preppy, less liberal, maybe heavier partying school. Maybe kinda outdoorsy. Again, that is just an idea that could very well be wrong.

Your D I would describe as very independent and unique, interested in things out of the mainstream. I know she is interested in classics and museum stuff. Not ideas I had of areas I would think of Colgate for. And I thought she wanted to stay much closer to home, although she is visiting Mount Holyoke, which might be a little farther, I’m not sure.

I hope I didn’t offend you. And I really would like to hear what you and she thinks of the school.

Does anyone know when the kids will be asked about sending their PSAT scores to colleges? I understand that the high scoring (commended and semi-finalists) students are asked to do this in the Spring.

You didn’t offend me at all. I was hoping for the impressions. My daughter is not the least a partier, isn’t preppy, and doesn’t care for the outdoors, so it doesn’t actually sound like a fit.

zm, again that is just my initial thoughts on the school, which can be totally wrong! They are also a Div I school, but not a ā€œbigā€ one so I don’t know how much a factor sports is there. I suggest reading the subforum here and if you do go for a visit, check out Hamilton also, which I think is a lot more quirky and has an open curriculum (no core)

Here are stats of accepted students from our school, I wasn’t sure if the stats pugmadkate posted were Colgate or Conn College.

School…Avg GPA…Avg 2400 SAT
Colgate…B+…1900
Conn Coll…B…2034***
Hamilton…B…1943

** this is deceiving because they don’t accept the SAT, either ACT or two SAT IIs.

Hi, jackief, is your school considered to have tough grading standards? I would have expected higher GPAs for students going to all three of those colleges.

No, students don’t send PSAT scores to colleges. Colleges buy email or postal mail lists from College Board with names of students who have specified ranges of scores on the PSAT (or other tests).

SSS

To the best of my knowledge and belief, the one place a student MIGHT send a PSAT score is a summer program or a private high school.

Is your child getting various forms of mail from colleges? We got two new mailing pieces today.

Wow, I go on spring break and now am hopelessly behind.

Several things caught my eye on a quick glance:

1) I want to hear all about Carleton.
2) We’re getting a dog, too, I think! My brother, who is on vacation with us, has too many animals, and this trip was partly to see how our very old dog does with one they rescued. So far, so good, so we might take him home! This is an older mutt. We’ll never do a puppy again. He’s gorgeous, with long black hair and tufts of light brown on his head and paws. Beautiful gold eyes. I hope dh says yes!!! He’s house-trained (the dog, not dh. Uh, well, he is, too!) and honors sit, shake and lie down.
3) archiemom, I understand the whole sports conflict thing. Ds is missing three games while in Europe for spring break. I’m afraid he’ll lose his starting spot. :frowning:
4) I have a friend making a similar trip as, ugh, someone, this week, including Evergreen, Reed and UWash. I’ll be curious to see how they like those schools. None interests ds.

I wish we were spending spring break looking at schools. Instead, ds is living the good life touring Spain, and we’re living a different kind of good life, fishing and playing cards and having a great time. Hope everyone’s week is going well.

tokenadult- yes. It is a small private school, which is why I put more stock in our naviance data (even though there aren’t a lot of datapoints for many schools) than the common data set stats. Those GPAs also include non-core classes and are unweighted. I also know several of the kids attending these three schools now, and so can put what I know of them from ECs into perspective against my D.

hi YDS- do you get any updates on how S’s trip is going? Is it just for this week?

My grandpa’s alma mater (which is one of the main reasons we don’t shop for it, because I figure my family is been-there-done-that with Carleton). Also the alma mater of my oldest living relative.

On a hilltop next to a pretty county seat town along a small river. GREAT library. Diverse student body from all over the place. Shares a few facilities with St. Olaf, if I remember correctly. Clearly the most academically selective college in Minnesota.

Stronger math and science emphasis than at many LACs, but also very credible humanities courses. Just close enough to the Twin Cities for access to cultural activities (if one can get a ride) but characterized by being in a rural small town. Convenient access to a major international airport.

Just sent my son a GORGEOUS calendar that begins this month and goes through next school year. Vigorously recruited the son of one of my work colleagues for soccer (but he went to State U to major in business instead). Gives interesting student-led tours of campus.

D’s best friend from high school is a junior at Carleton. She’s a very outdoorsy girl, is majoring in Physics, and absolutely adores the place. It is, however, REALLY, REALLY cold in the winter.

And zm: another of D’s HS friends is a junior at Colgate. He’s preppy, outgoing, athletic, heavily into his fraternity, and loves the place. jackief’s post characterized the school very well, at least from what I understand. Colgate is, as my husband likes to say, ā€œcentrally isolatedā€, and that’s something to bear in mind as well.

We haven’t heard a word. I’m assuming no news is good news. We didn’t send him with a phone or anything. I figured I could wait 10 days to talk to him. Still, an e-mail would have been nice … sniff, sniff

jackief: just like our school…and why CC is very skewed and distorted…your naviance looks like ours for those schools…

the only thing it doesn’t tell is rigor (AP’s) and whether a student is a legacy, URM or athlete…

Does yours distinguish ED/RD? I have heard that some do…

You would think they could find time and a place for an email wouldn’t you - but DS did the same thing to us a few years back. First we heard from him was at the airport…

oh yes I have also heard that Colgate is very hilly, which will probably be the kiss of death for D, who was turned off to Cornell for this reason (tongue in cheek, there are other reasons Cornell is not right for her) We are primarily focused on Hamilton but will add Colgate onto our trip whenever it takes place.

m-mom, if you’re talking about designating a college for National Merit, that happens if a semi-finalist becomes a finalist (which most of them do). There is paperwork to fill out at that time, and you are asked to designate a first choice school. But you don’t send PSAT scores to colleges, only SAT (or ACT) scores.

rodney-we do have breakouts for ED/EA in the avg accepted and avg applied data. What we won’t have (as shown in the Conn Coll example above) is to show which scores a student submitted if they have SAT/ACT/and in some cases SAT IIs which can be sent for admissions. And I did also note earlier somewhere the lack of other knowledge for legacy/athlete, with our small data set you do know who that this is the case with some dots, I’m wondering if the college counselor can answer the question ā€œcan you tell me if there is anything special to know about this dot?ā€ if asked that question.

I had the same thoughts about Colgate, but since I don’t know anyone attending right now, I couldn’t be sure it was still that way. The school is on the list D’s GC created for her (as is Hamilton), but she hasn’t mentioned interest in either of them. And Booklady, ā€œcentrally isolatedā€ is as good a description as any I’ve heard…lol.

YDS - I’m sorry you haven’t heard from your S. He’s with your H, isn’t he? I hope they call or email you tonight!
