Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Thank you all! If it were not for cc, it never would have occured to me to sign him up for the ACT his junior year and it feels great to have this out of the way. So, thank you for that as well. I love my cc friends!

Congrats to your son, pugmadkate! Awesome score, and it will no doubt help in the merit aid department!

pugmadkate: awesome score! your S will do great, I’m sure.

PMK:

Wunderbar ACT score! Your S is on his way now and in the driver’s seat for many places. What a nice feeling this should be.

Wow, I’ve been bummed with the negative info coming out the last two weeks about groups associated with USC.

At least today there was good news that they caught the passenger (husband of the hit and run driver that killed one USC student and seriously wounded another) coming across the border back into the US. But then I heard they let him out on $50,000 bail. What??? He was the one that rolled the boyfriend off the hood of the car so his wife could keep on driving.

I already mentioned the ill conceived haz mat prank by the honor society. Now a fraternity is suspended while the LAPD investigates a possible drink induced sexual assault on one, possibly three women. It also happens to be one of the frats that some CC posters indicate is the most popular one. Ugh. Everyone’s waiting on the facts to come out, remembering the horrific incident with the Duke lacrosse team a few years ago.

A common theme to two of these is drinking. Consider advising your S or D accordingly. We’ve used the incidents as object lessons for our S.

LI - That’s a good point. Although the campus chapel holds services in the afternoon (it’s the prettiest building on campus, but locked when I tried the doors), so I’m not sure where they could walk to in that kind of dress. But you see my atheist’s ignorance of religious practices. :D

pugmadkate - Huge congrats to your S! That is a phenomenal score.

Pudmadkate: Congrats on the score! Isn’t it great to have that weight off of his shoulders :)?

pugmadkate: congratulations…fabulous score for your s!

I have an act question if any one has an opinion: S, a junior, took act pretty much without prep and he did very well 31 comp (e 35, r 34, s 32 m23). Math is not his strong suit but we are trying to determine if retaking with some math prep would be worthwhile. ACT is completely score choice, correct? his concern would be if he didnt do as well, i thought then he could just send these scores.

Does anyone proof read the stuff that comes from the College Board? D just got a note with this opening line:

ā€œSo you’ve taken the SAT. Smart move. Thinking of taking SAT Subject Tests? That’s even smarterā€¦ā€

Well, she is registered to take the SAT-- in MAY. Now she’s wondering if she missed the day of the test, somehow.

expatme - I would definitely study math and retake. That subscore is ~10 below his others, which might raise a red flag to adcoms regardless. And he can focus his studying on just math, since his other section scores are fine.

thanks Keil…
Actually his transcript will bare out the not so great math skills also. It is fairly consistent despite tutoring etc. Not failing grades, but significantly lower than his eng/hist/ science etc. Luckily he doesn’t want to be an engineer :)

But if for some reason the second set of scores were not as good, he can send just the first ones, correct?

expatme, yes…for most schools. A few schools want to see all sittings of any test, but most will allow you to send scores from just one. There’s a thread (which I can’t seem to find at the moment) that lists the policies of some of the top schools.

Keilexandra - I remembered that you mentioned being an atheist, and I only thought of the church thing because you mentioned that it was Easter morning. The kids could have been going to a church off-campus, and it’s possible that if there’s no church in walking distance, that one of them had a car. Back when I was in college, two students on my floor regularly attended Catholic mass on Sundays, and they preferred walking to the Catholic church to attending services at the campus chapel. The church was walking distance from the campus, but it was a looong walk.

Why is my 14yo reading the college mail more closely than is junior brother??? Snack at Pomona has caught his eye. :)

Youdon’tsay, my S really likes the idea of ā€œsnackā€, too. Pomona has a number of benefits that caught our eye. To say nothing of being one of the most beautiful campuses we have seen. But last year I believe their acceptance rate was 16% (?). Ouch.

College Board just sends reminders to take the tests out at this time of year, even to students who have taken all the tests they strictly need to take.

I know that the CB sends out periodic reminders. We were laughing because she hasn’t taken any SAT’s, but they act like she has.

OK, just needing a little support here. Dh is being admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and chest pains. They are being super-cautious, and I’m sure it’s nothing, but I’ll take any good vibes you can send!!! Will let you know what we find out.

YDS:

Good vibes from SoCal. I know sometimes we’d all like to focus on something other than college stuff, but a family medical issue isn’t one of those things.

Wish we could send you some of our cheery weather (although it’s getting a bit hot today.)

YDS - Your H is in my thoughts and prayers for a full speedy recovery.

I’ve had pneumonia and it made my chest hurt, too. Pain like an injury, not an illness. Here’s hoping that’s what it is and there’s nothing cardio going on.

Please keep us posted. {{hug}}
