Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

AP Eng Lang is basically SAT-type reading comp and some essays. Not much to study for at all. S1’s AP Lang teacher graded harder than the APs so they all scored 5s on the real thing and made Bs in his class. (Teacher was also an AP grader, so he knew what he was doing.)

Good luck to all!!

Good to know,CD!

We call it May Madness in CA. Imagine, the APs, SAT and standardized state testing all in the same month. At least next year, it will “just” be the APs.

Makes me want to pamper S on Mother’s Day than the reverse!

AP Stat for Son tomorrow. Then World History next week.

Over the weekend Son told me that most important thing he learned in AP Stat this year is that “you can miss 50% of the questions and still get a 3.”

After I  at him, I reminded him that - #1 - that is NOT the most important thing he’s learned in Stat all year, and - #2 - scoring a 3 is NOT the ultimate goal.

DB, I’m sorry but I had to laugh at your son’s statement. And while we also are hoping for higher than 3s on the AP tests, I’d rather hear of a student with that attitude than one in tears over the stress of it all. Those poor darlin’s, that was me 20 years ago.

What is amazing to me now is how much of this these kids of ours are just born with. I am a world class worrier, my S had colic for five months and once that was over he mellowed way out. Still hasn’t found a reason to get worked up over anything beyond a mild anxiety. It’s a mystery.

D starts APs tomorrow - Stats. Then APUSH on Friday, Physics Monday, and AP Engl Lang next Wed. (I think that’s the order). She hasn’t studied much for any of them, though they’ve been doing practices in USH and Statistics. Not sure about Physics, and they haven’t practiced at all for English from what I understand.

PMK - I agree with you - I’d rather see the kid with the more relaxed attitude than the one in tears. My D can get stressed, though usually not to the point of tears - but it’s more because she does so many ECs, than because of the coursework.

Oops - just realized I’ve got to run. Bye for now.

DD hasn’t studied a lick yet for her APs. Of course, part of that is because she was taking the SATs on Saturday, plus she had 2 essays due today for APUSH (timed practice DBQs I believe she told me.) While the other APUSH class has been reviewing for 2 weeks, her class will just finish up the content today, giving them 3 days to review :)

and why would she worry about the AP English Language when that’s not until the middle of next week? Last year, for Euro, I’m pretty sure the only review she did (besides what they did in the classroom) was the night before.

She’s job shadowing this afternoon; the honors classes are required to have some type of portfolio assignments so they can prove that it is truly teaching/exposing beyond the level of a regular class. Both her honors classes have their job shadowing due this week. Why would you job shadow, oh say in October, when you can wait until the week it is due. And have all the end of year testing looming also. Sigh.

Rob, I think we might be raising twins seperated at birth! And I’m guessing we’re both going to come out of this with a lot more gray hair because of it.

Nope, we’ve got triplets.

Must be IVF; we’ve got quadruplets.

I’ve been out of the loop due to my own high stress work and travel schedule lately. Thankfully I’m past that so I can lend some support during APs. Calc BC on Wednesday, Physics B on Monday, Macro (self-study) on Thursday, and Physics C Mechanics on the alternate date the following Friday (self-study). Oh, and today, tears.

We were hoping to get all of the standardized testing out of the way Junior year, but decided to postpone the second sitting for the SAT until the fall. She just had NO time to do practice tests. Physics and Math IIC and then the ACT in June. I can’t wait to park this kid at the neighborhood pool with a nice novel! What a year!

LOL! I can’t do that for relaxation for S since he’s on swim team. Perhaps a nice spot on a sandy beach with an umbrella, his iPod and a cold one (ROOT beer.)

Youdon’tsay, My S didn’t do a bit of AP studying over the weekend, beyond his homework assignments, and studying for an APUSH test today (yep – today).

Kelowna, S took three SAT IIs on Saturday, including Math 2 and USH, both of which he announced (before he even drove home from the tests) that he would be re-taking in June. Ouch. Tomorrow is the last day to register for June tests without paying the late fee… guess I better get on that. :(

Well my D is not related at all. LOL. She hasn’t studied, mind you, but she is stressing.

astromom – Macro is next Thursday, 5/14, not this Thurs. (unless he has special scheduling arrangements).

I have a junior who is taking Macro and Micro next week…

Thanks, CountingDown. That’s what I meant. I’m sure it will fly by as if it’s only two days away!

I just got home from AP French Language, my first ever AP test. I had a glaring headache for the entirety of the 4 hours. And, to make matters worse, today is my and my boyfriend’s 6-month anniversary and we were so stressed studying for our respective APs (he took US Gov’t this morning) that we didn’t plan to meet up or anything…

One down, two to go?

I haven’t studied much for Calc AB outside of class–we’ve been doing practices for over a month in-class–but I’m scoring solidly in the 4 range. Of course, I’m not satisfied with that and I’ll be skipping school tomorrow to intensively study. (I don’t know about anyone else, but skipping the day before a difficult AP is almost expected at my school.)

It’s an excused absence at my school… no matter the difficulty of the AP.

Good friend OOS called to tell me her ds’s HS is closed thanks to swine flu. Meeting tonight in the football stadium for parents. Thankfully, her ds took an AP exam this a.m. before the school closed, but he’s got one more to go. And this week they’re supposed to take the STAR tests. What a headache.

Oh, and got details from ds about BC cal practice tests. Of the ones he’s taken in class, he’s made a 2 (first one; he disregards it, like a bad first pancake  ), some 3s and 4s and two 5s, so he knows he CAN do it. And he wonders whether the teacher is curving the test hard to make their scores seem lower than they are.
