Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

We’re excused for the entire day if we have at least one AP exam on the day, but I think day-before absences technically have to be “medical” excuses. OTOH, I’m sure the administration doesn’t question the high incidence of illness before particularly arduous APs.

Keil: That illness is very likely to strike my D’s school on Thursday, between AB Calc and APUSH.

does the CDC know about this sudden outbreak of AP flu?

Shhhh! LOL!

pmk, I’m surprised they haven’t said anything in the website, they were very upfront about it when we visited and the student newspaper talked about it to. They’ll be giving at least as much if not more need based aid so it may not be out completely. I don’t however think they are eliminating merit aid all together.

S2’s Bio teacher knows that most of the kids have APUSH this Friday. He told them if they came only for his bio class he wouldn’t mark them present they could just pretend to be sick for the whole day.

I don’t believe my D’s school has an excused absence policy for either the day before APs or the day of APs. At least I’ve never heard of one, and I’m pretty sure that’s something D would have shared with me. Would be nice though to have the teachers cut the kids some slack.

Yeah, if ds were allowed to miss school on AP days, I’m sure I would have heard. Lucky y’all!

S confirmed that yes, there are kids that are missing who mysteriously appear all chipper the next day, ready for their AP test.

He feels good about APUSH based on sample test and will now be busy making flash cards of physics formulas.

AP days are excused absence days here; I think part of the reason for that is because they take them off site and they’d all either leave or arrive at the same time causing a disruption at the school. So this Friday she’ll be at a local megachurch taking APUSH (which I thought they were going to finish up today; no: today, Nixon got elected, tomorrow is Watergate and Wednesday will be the Ford-Clinton years.)

My D’s AP English teacher pointedly told the class today that even if they miss class because they are taking another AP exam, she expects them to find out what the assignments are for the next day, and complete them. And the chemistry teacher has a test scheduled for tomorrow.

mathmom, that is such a sweet biology teacher!

He is sweet. And extremely dedicated and organized. At one point after catching up from a snow day, he told the kids they were fifteen minutes behind schedule.

The kids here get the full day off if there’s an AP/IB exam. S2 has an IB Exam that starts at 2:30pm (after school gets out for the day). The only thing that will happen in that case is a LOT of sleep, not studying!

Love it!

Not one thing has changed on the front pages of the financial aid website nor on the merit scholarship information page. If I didn’t come here, I’d have no reason to believe that S’s chances were any worse next year than they would have been last year or this year. I do wish they’d change it to reflect their new reality. My kid loves Brandeis and thank goodness I will not be leading him down the primrose path with unrealistic expectations.

The school district we live in has closed all public schools from preschool-12. S goes to school in the neighboring district and they are not closing any schools.

I must admit that the logic is escaping me. My S’s school district is literally on a large island. Most people who live there work in town. And a lot of kids who attend school there also live in town.

S and his friends want school off, too. I am very happy that school is not closed for now. I cannot imagine trying to reschedule the SATs last week and APs next week. No, thank you.

Last month, at a Brandeis info session, the on campus rep did admit, when ASKED, that Brandeis had been forced to make cuts in the merit scholarship area to maintain (and sometimes increase for current students) the need based aid.

It makes sense that they had to do that. What I don’t understand is why parents and students are having to ask for that information. Why not put a letter up at the financial aid page? What would it hurt?

Just dropped DD off at school. She’ll be taking her AP Statistics exam this afternoon. No getting to sleep in here - she still has to go to her morning classes. At least she’ll get to have a lunch break before the exam which should give her time to relax.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone. Isn’t there supposed to be a party over on the '09 thread? It’s still a little early for margaritas or sangria, but since they’re virtual, why not see what they’re serving.

at our school, if you have an afternoon AP you can take the morning off. For morning APs, I think they give you an extra hour after the test before needing to return to class. APUSH is in the morning on Friday, and we have 1pm dismissal for the prom.

Next week I think Latin Lit is an afternoon AP but she probably will attend morning classes as she is already very prepared for that test. Last year when she self studied Psych, I know we discussed taking the morning off, she didn’t end up doing it, I don’t remember the reasoning.

Some of her friends routinely take “mental health days” to stay home to finish up work, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some AP flu in our school among that group.

LIMOM, good luck to your D on Stats and any others taking a test today that I missed. I will have to go get an 09 margarita. I think we will hit 6000 today, don’tcha think?
