Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

K: None of the ones I am thinking of as a match is an ivy or a top 3 LAC, so I went online to verify. One (Georgetown) has a global acceptance rate in the high teens, while the others (Northwestern, UChicago, Rice) are actually 20’s, so I guess they would meet your criteria for match.

I’d be wary of counting any school with an admit rate in the 20s a match, even if your school usually does better. Too many stories out there about kids being rejected despite stats that were much better than classmates who were accepted at the same highly selective schools. When 3 out of 4 (or more) are being rejected it’s just too much of a crapshoot to call it a match. And I’m sorry, but applying to 4 such schools does not make it one bit more likely that you’ll be accepted at any of them.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms out there.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of my fellow 2010 moms!

From what I’ve heard, D had a great time at her prom last night, and-thanks to our local weather holding out–I managed to get some nice outdoor pics of the kids before they left.:)

D receiving the Princeton mailing yesterday, but nothing from Yale. She also received some mail, a few days back from USC and Rice, as well as the Wash U viewbook and app. Her list is definitely taking shape, but it’s about 7-8 schools, and I’m wondering if she needs more. Her list does includes two public universities that could perhaps count as both safeties (for admission to the university, at large) and (high?) targets (for admission to their respective Honors colleges).

vicariousparent - Wow, I didn’t know that Georgetown’s acceptance rate was so low.

Happy Mother’s day!

Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy the day all.

Re: safety-match-reach, I don’t think that discussion will ever end. I think the problem is there just aren’t neat little categories, it is all a continuum of probabilities. The task is to come up with a list of colleges, any one of which will be a good fit, and where the aggregate probability of admission to at least one of the colleges approaches 1.

Happy mother’s day, all!

I also won’t be doing anything too extravagant this summer. Usually my parents send both me and my brother to camps (soccer for him, academic for me) and then we travel to Europe as a family, but we can’t really afford that this summer. So I’ll be working and my brother will be volunteering at our high school, which has an academic summer camp for gifted elementary school children; we’re going to be student aides. I think we’re going to take a smaller family vacation, going somewhere in New England for a week or two, and maybe do a little college tripping as well, but most of the schools I want to visit in the Northeast don’t start classes or even orientation until late August or early September so there doesn’t seem to be a point in visiting. Oh well.

Happy Mother’s Day, one and all. I’m still in my PJs and will try to not think about college things Though I’ll add that ds is at a friend’s studying for the physics AP exam.

With heartfelt appreciation from a dad, a happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms on this thread…

Happy Mother’s Day!

Keix: I’m so sorry to hear your best Calc teacher is retiring the end of this year. We’re lucky our BC teacher is only in his 40s.

We worry about retirement with the stellar AP English Lang/Lit teacher. I saw her Friday evening at the Tribute to the Stars gala honoring teachers, volunteers and donors to the school district. I hailed her saying, “Oh, and here’s S’s favorite teacher.” She laughed and said to her date, “Oh, S and I get into arguments EVERY day. Intellectual ones.” Then she winked.

======================================================

With schools that have admit rates in the 20s, you realize they are still admitting only about 1 in 5 applicants or so. Still seems like a stiff head wind. Thank goodness we have places like this to test out our assumptions on things we’ve heard or read elsewhere.

I was thinking UCSD was looking like it could be on S’s list of safeties. However, since they’ve now TWICE botched up sending out email acceptances (this second time with the transfers), I’m not impressed with the weakness of their back office. Which of course makes me wonder about other hassles students may have to put up with on an ongoing basis.

YDS:

My S will be holed up part of the day studying for his Monday AP Physics test as well.

As for thoughts about Longhorns here in Trojan country … they don’t think about 'em. <friendly rivalry=“” going=“” on=“” here=“” folks,=“” do=“” not=“” be=“” alarmed=“”></friendly>

Happy Mother’s Day to all! DS is holed up doing last minute review for AP Bio and AP Physics B, which have been foolishly scheduled for the same day. Ugh.

Happy mothers’ day all.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.

I’ve got an AP World study group in my basement right now. (But why am I hearing ping-pong?)

My soon to be 14 Yo DD made me Louisiana Chicken for Dinner today. My favorite dish from Cheesecake Factory. It was d e l i c i o u s.

After today, I may only be having dessert at CF, no more entrees! Not even sure I’ll have left over to take to work tomorrow!. Happy Mothers Day to all you Moms!

S2 has been doing biology all day today, and all day yesterday too.

The studying ended hours ago, and now all the boys are at the new Star Trek movie. I stayed home and watched a chick flick!

Well, I suspect all the Moms found somewhere on CC are likely okay with the fact that their kids are in major study mode for their Monday APs and will be happy to take rain checks for activities and such. I know I am.

Oh, I included the study session as a gift!

Yesterday, we were at a party for ds14’s sports team, and a bunch of the guys were spending the night at one boy’s house. Ds came up to me and said, “They asked me, too, but I told them tomorrow is Mother’s Day and I can’t miss that.” Goood answer. :)

But this morning I found myself thinking next year will be the last time that I’ll wake up to breakfast in bed with all my boys. sniff sniff
