Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

YDS - maybe not. I understand some kids are already home from college. :)

My D is trying hard to study for AP Physics, but she’s got a miserable cold (crossing my fingers that it’s not the flu). She’s also got a ton of homework to get through.

What happens if someone is sick the day of the AP exam? I guess I’d better find out.

^^ Sorry to hear about your D’s cold, LIMOM. Hope she feels better soon.

They have scheduled make up days for the APs, but I believe one pays an additional fee unless there’s a good excused. Check the CB web site. I had a friend whose twins were on the swim team, and the quals are always during AP weeks so she always ended up having to pay the additional fee every year, times two. Ouch. The kids landed well, graduated from Emory and are now doing grad school at Stanford.

I checked that CB website, and couldn’t find any info. If she isn’t feeling better by morning, I’ll call the school to ask. Luckily, her AP is scheduled for the afternoon if she has to go in and take it.

LIMOMOF2, That’s a good idea. S is coming down with something but it’s of the runny nose variety, not swine flu (sorry, I can’t remember the real name of the flu.)

H1N1, I think. I seriously think D just has a really bad cold - no fever yet, and she started feeling miserable yesterday. But if it’s a bad cold, then it’s still hard to concentrate when you’re sneezing, coughing, blowing your nose, and just plain fuzzy-headed.

Hope everyone enjoyed her Mother’s Day. I got my usual gift–a day in the garden with unlimited spousal labor. I let the kids off the hook since D1 is studying hard for AP Physics. She’s worried about this one even though she has done great in the course. They did not get good preparation for the exam and covered a lot of material at the very end. I’m pretty irked at the teacher.

LIMOM–hope your D feels better. Seems like CB must have a policy for sick kids, but I don’t know what it is. There are alternate test dates next week to deal with scheduling conflicts, but the school would have to get their hands on version B of the exam if that’s allowed for illness.

astromom:

My S also said it was a bit rushed at the end of his AP Physics C class, the part on magnetism. Good luck to all the AP Physics exam takers tomorrow. It’s this class or AP Calc BC that are considered the toughest of the science/math AP tests.

LIMOMOF2:

May 20-22 are the late test dates for AP exams, with results possibly delayed to August. Here’s a link with more info (ignore the dates, as they are from 2008): Higher Education Professionals | College Board;

Happy Mother’s Day to all…DH is out of the country for work, S1 is still at school, and S2 has been studying for AP and IB Econ, all four sittings of which are this week. S2 is upstairs making me a yummy dinner right now, so I’ll forgive him for not getting to the lawn today. ;)

Thanks, FindAPlace. I looked at that, but I didn’t see anything about allowing a late test because of illness (I’ll look again, just in case I missed it). Plus, for the other excuses, it’s still an additional $40. I really hope she’s okay in the morning.

CD - S2 is making you a yummy dinner when he has 4 APs this week? What a great guy. And yes, forgive him missing the lawn work today. :)

D is not taking any AP science, her only remaining AP is AP English, for which she isn’t doing anything to prep. She has had a relaxed weekend- shopping for a prom dress yesterday (her prom is next weekend) and our traditional mothers day hike today.

VP:

We also did the Mother’s day hike - my wife, her mom and dad and then our two kids. So three generations.

First time for a Mother’s day hike - but I sense a tradition forming… It was a beautiful day here in Central California.

LIMom,
S2 is happy to cook if it means he can stop doing school work for a while…but seriously, as you know, he has done a lot of catering (both paid and for volunteer hours), so he loves it and he’s good at it. Best part – he had all the ingredients IN ADVANCE! Usually when he decides to cook, DH or I have to make an emergency shopping trip to pick up something S2 forgot.

He had considered applying to the hotel school at Cornell at one point a couple of years ago, but was discouraged after reading that so many people leave the field after a few years.

We did forget to order the GF’s corsage this weekend  …guess we’ll do that tomorrow after his IB exam.

Good luck to everyone’s kids taking AP Bio and/or Physics later today!

My D has a very dedicated teacher who actually gave up 2 hours of Mother’s Day to have the final study session for AP Bio from Noon-2PM. She’s been kind enough to hold several of these sessions in the evenings. Some of them have been informal potlucks where the students all bring something.

So, we shall see how it goes tomorrow!

AACK! Ds, on his way out the door to school this a.m., says he’s still debating whether to go to prom. Uh, it’s THIS Saturday. He says that because he’s not a senior he doesn’t have to wear a tux, so he can just wear the beautiful new suit we bought him for his birthday.

What do y’all think? No date. But that’s not a problem at his school at all. I asked whether he would just get up a bunch of friends to go together and he hadn’t gotten that far.

So, prom in a suit not a tux? WDYT?

scualum:

Actually, Mother’s Day hikes are a tradition at our house. Yesterday, study for AP Physics C took precedence, however. (My S commented this may be the hardest one subject test he’s ever taken, judging from the breadth of topics covered and his experience from the sample tests. He’s been studying hard for it all last week and through the weekend.)

However, H agreed that we and the doggies could take a stroll in the regional park that is nearby the house. Views weren’t great since it was a smoggy day but the temp was perfect. Dogs were happy although by the end, short legged corgi was more than happy to flop out on the cool tile floor.

My S went to junior prom in a suit. According to him, the guys wear suits to junior prom and tuxes to senior prom. The junior prom pictures I saw verify that the vast majority of guys seemed to be wearing suits, with a few tuxes mixed in.

Thanks. This is a junior-senior prom, but I e-mailed a senior mom who said, yes, kids can wear suits. Looks like he might go!

S wore a suit on Saturday for the prom. Actually, he wore black pants and a black corduroy blazer with a dress shirt buttoned up underneath (pink, white and black vertial stripes) and no tie. He felt confident and he did look very nice. He said he might wear a tux next year but probably not. Is it so wrong for a mother to want a picture of her only child in a tux? (S’s answer to that query? “It’s not wrong but it might not happen.” Oy!) He had a great time.

S was up very late Saturday night for prom and now something new must be blooming because he’s really struggling with his allergies. Normally he has very mild allergies during the Spring and they are well controlled. Hopefully this will pass soon.

Good luck to the AP test takers today!

Surprise email from Telluride in my inbox today, just as I was wondering if they might call me this weekend while I was away at a conference. I got into TASP off the waitlist!
