Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Keil – Major, major congrats!!!

DD spent Mother’s Day studying for AP Chem test tomorrow. This will be the most difficult of the APs for her. She told me this morning as she left for school that she expects to be up late tonight as she has rehearsals for a musical she’s cast in until 9:00 pm. I told her to try to get to bed by midnight tonight then she can get 6 plus hours sleep before the AP. AP English will be on Wednesday, but she is really not doing any prep for that outside of what the English teacher is giving them.

Congratulations, Keilexandra!

AP Physics exam has begun on the west coast. My S worked so hard studying for it I actually remembered when looking at my watch. Tonight I’ll make one of his favorite meals.

Keil: Great to be off a WL, congrats. Here’s hoping you won’t find yourself on one next year with the college apps. I’m sure these WL can be agony. Apparently enough of the WL and transfer applicants to Stanford have been trying various ways to hack the system to get info before May 15 that the Dean of Admissions actually posted a letter on the Stanford web site (and on CC) on how that’s not a good idea and those caught will not be at Stanford next year.

Congratulations, Keil! I think you seem like a natural for TASP. Editing to ask if you know which one you will be attending.

That is phenomenal news, Keilexandra!

FAP, I can’t believe some kids will resort to hacking to get to a school, and even alluded to it here on CC. I can’t understand what make them think they could get away with that.
I bet their parents are not aware of it.

They were trying to find out whether they got in or not, before the scheduled announcement date. They were not trying to change a ‘reject’ into an ‘accept’, though some might have risked changing their ‘accept’ to a ‘reject’ if Stanford found out.

This is similar to how some students and parents managed to ‘hack’ into the MyCollegeQuickstart page of Collegeboard to find out their PSAT scores before the control freaks of their high school counseling office distributed the results.

Thanks VP for the clarification.
I still think, they should have waited. I know the wait is nerve whacking. Two years ago S was on a WL until August. He was so anxious he drove me nuts.

Wondeful news, Keilexandra!

Thanks everyone! I’m definitely excited. Need to notify two other places that I won’t be attending (backup summer program, plus a conference). I’ll be going to UT-Austin–first time in Texas, ever! I know there are some Texans here… any tips on dealing with the heat? I hope there’s AC.

ontheedge - Did your S end up getting off that WL?

Keilexandra - Congrats on getting off the WL - what wonderful news! I’m very happy for you!

D took her Physics AP today, and when I asked how it was, she shrugged and said she didn’t know. These non-answers are so annoying!

Love the idea of a Mother’s Day hike - unfortunately, there was nobody here to hike with me yesterday. D was home, but sick and trying to study for Physics plus finish up her other assignments, and S and H were at H’s mom’s house planting annuals and vegetables in her yard. :stuck_out_tongue: I really didn’t mind, but a family hike might have been fun - especially as it was pretty nice out yesterday.

CD - I didn’t remember about your S catering, though I know he cooks at home sometimes.

Keix, trust me, there will be AC. You’ll love Austin. Just drink lots of water. More than you think you want. What are the dates on that? I remember ds getting something about it but don’t remember the dates.

Keilexandra:

Key survival techniques developed after years of travel baseball

Lots and Lots of fluids
Lots and Lots of sunscreen / bug repellent
Seek out the shade at every opportunity
Always wear UVA/UVB sunglasses
If you get a headache, get inside and drink more fluids
If you stop sweating, get inside and check for other signs of heatstroke.

Congratulations Keilexandra! Enjoy Austin–it’s a great city! (I visited there for a long weekend last year.)

Re: A/C in Texas: Years ago I was visiting Houston for a two month period and someone had arranged temporary housing in a university owned apartment building. I innocently asked the manager of the building whether the apartment would have air-conditioning. Deeply offended, she replied “Yes, and we have running water too”!

Keil, wow! Congratulations!

Oh, bug repellent–have to remember that one. I’m kind of scared of heat–I don’t have any preferred climate other than comfortably sunny and breezy, but I’ve experienced cold (not in Delaware; 5 years in Newfoundland, y’know, that big island thing up in the north and the easternmost tip of North America)–not that I LIKE cold, but I know I can handle it–whereas I’ve never been anywhere as hot as Texas summer. Good to know that there will be AC!

Dates are June 28 - August 8, so almost the entire summer.

AP Physics C was definitely a challenge for S. He said he’d be happy with a 4 on mechanics and surprisingly felt the electricity/magnetism test was easier. It seems to be the consensus from his class (and on CC) that a few of the FRQ on the mechanics test were “pure evil.” Anyway, S said he now be rethinking engineering. He’s waxed and waned on this one many times. I’m not going to comment, as his major is up to him.

He does come from a long line of engineers but his own father managed to diverge to be a math professor. He’s got time to sort this all out, although I do think we should arrange possibilities where he might talk to adults in these fields.

Keil:

If you have wheels and a free weekend, check out San Antonio while you’re down Texas way. The Riverwalk there is delightful. I happened to be there the day the Spurs won the NBA championship and wow, was that area ever rocking!
