Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Posted graduation pictures on the shutterfly site and finally took time to see everyone’s prom pictures. Oh my! Such truly handsome young men and amazingly gorgeous young ladies.

We are all truly blessed.

^I hear you, cgpm59

^ Oh, I would love to see that, EmmyBet…

^ LOL, VAMom2015, I’m from the dark ages too!

^ RenaissanceMom, I loved that restaurant! :)

Reading about all your afterprom party/arrangements, I wish we had something similar at S’s school!

So the temperature hit 101 here in Austin today; DH got home and our a/c was not running, not even the fan, and it was up to 85 inside our house. Called the a/c repair people at 5:15 and just a few minutes ago (about 8:30 p.m.) the a/c just came back on! For what it’s costing for this repair, I could have taken one of you with us to Alaska next weekend! :)

cgpm - I knew there was a reason I didn’t live in Austin! 101F, yikes!

cgpm59, no wonder you’re headed to Alaska!

I am on the party committee at D’s (private) school too. We have it on graduation night here, and it’s not optional. The kids’ accounts are each charged for it but I don’t think most people realize how much of the “senior year fees” goes to this one party. I like the idea of keeping the kids safe – but I agree that these parties are starting to morph into something else. Each one has to be at least as “good” (over the top) as the previous year’s, so the kids aren’t disappointed… and they’re all “such good kids” that security measures loosen up over time. I think it’s quite possible, with smart phones now, to have people meet the students at the secret venues with illicit substances.

I suggested a basket of condoms in the back room at one venue since the party committee was balking at having enough chaperones to watch the doors…

Son and I went to the bank today to set up his checking account, get his ATM card, and learn how to use everything. Now he just needs a job so there are deposits as well as withdrawals. He is working on it plus still doing scholarships. Even had time to go to a party tonight.

Me - parental drama starting with a call from my mom at 8AM. That is never good news. Things calmed down by the end of the day. Til tomorrow.

cgpm - my sister is in New Braunfels and her AC went out today also! Her facebook status cracked me up… “my SWEAT is sweating”! Hearing stories like this makes me appreciate living in the Midwest where the high today was in the low 80s. Of course, I am extremely jealous of all of you when I am shoveling snow in the winter!

D and H were staying up late working on her powerpoint presentation for graduation. My part in all this was to help her choose her music to accompany the slides and remind when it was due. She chose “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash (since she pretty much has- I have to get the lyrics and see how many of the cities she has actually been in but I know I have been to almost all that I caught) and Mozart’s Ronda alla Turca. Later today, after our dreaded medical meeting, we are going to field day and picnic for our co-op. It will be the last time she sees many of the families and kids- both she and her younger sister. Then tomorrow, she is getting her grad present= a new Droid phone (which her psychologist at the neuropsych evaluation strongly recommended so she could use alarm features and other devices to keep her life in order without me). I am buying food for the kids and their social obligations while we are gone and packing for h’s and my trip to hopeful buy a house. The girls will be very busy while we are gone=both will be working, older d as petsitter, younger as snack shop sales person at the pool, thne other events for older d include honor’s lunch, and senior picnic. Both d’s have cul-de-sac party and possibly canoeing too. We will be calling a lot or emailing them since they both want to see pictures and impressions of the houses we visit.

^^^ Wow MM, busy, busy time. I think the phone might be great for your D, based upon “my friend’s” child’s experience. ;)

NYC- It’s not real cheap, but my family has always liked the Warwick Hotel in Mid-town and the Hampton Inn near Madison Sq. Garden was “fine”. We are going cheap, cheap , cheap (but D was not willing to share a bathroom) so in June we are staying on the Westside at Hotel Newton. Have not been there so can’t tell you if it is good or not.

cgpm - Glad your A/C is back in business. They always break on the hottest day of the year :(

Congratulation to GaMomof3’s D, who is graduating today!

I haven’t posted in a while but read every day. It is so exciting to read of everyone’s recitals, awards, graduations, proms, etc. Her, we are in full-blown senioritis mode, but school is in session for another month.

Also, in my district, we have the prom after graduation. This way, the school doesn’t have to worry about potential infractions getting in the way of graduating the seniors.

Congrats to GaMom’s D on her graduation!

cgpm: Glad that you got the A/C fixed before bed. It sounds hot!

Last night’s award ceremony was very nice. I was very happy to see some of the students we’ve know since elementary school get recognized. I only mangled one name when I persented the PTA scholarships. VAMOM, the presentation of the NROTC scholarships by navel officers was very nice and the audience was very supportive of the two young men receiving them.

Just looked at the updated shutterfly site. I love seeing all the grad and prom pictures! My son’s prom is next weekend. We ordered the tux last week and will order the flowers today. Our school does nothing for after prom or after graduation. Some parents tried to get an after prom event going several years ago, but they just couldn’t get it off the ground. I think my son and his GF and maybe another couple or two might come over here afterwards. We have an extra bedroom for girls or they can collapse on sofa’s in the basement. Whatever they do, it will be pretty casual.

Tomorrow is picnic afternoon at the school. The kids get their yearbooks and then spend the day outside, hanging out on the school grounds, signing yearbooks or doing some carnival-like games. Hoping for good weather. In the eleven years I’ve had kids in the High School, the picnic day has always been non-rainy, so we all hope that good luck continues.

Meanwhile, my oldest son who got back from his solo four month adventure in Europe is taking his time getting used to family schedules. Anyone want to adopt a 24 year old? Must have access to lots of food and a good internet connection…

^^^ Just sent him along with AK’s girls. We have wicked fast Internet. And D is a great cook.

OWM - What a nightmare you’ve had! So glad you’re through it!

Amandakayak - I had the opportunity to help build a kayak at a local boat-builder as part of a community project to celebrate the opening of a “Hike, Bike and Paddle” set of trails and streams - we did it the old way, with wooden pegs and sewing the frame and skin together. What a hoot!

Congrats to all on graduations (ours is still to come), and the awards that the CC Class of 2011 sons and daughters keep racking up! I am so very impressed with everything everyone is doing to celebrate - we’re going to try to do a party for several generations of friends at our house, and I’m getting great ideas (as always) from all of you.

We had prom last night - to my delight, D has decided to wear a wonderful vintage silk lace and silk chiffon dress (circa 1929) of mine. The senior celebration at the theatre company was yesterday - a really great tribute to a very talented class, and kleenex were in evidence everywhere. We left that to go to a presentation (including a check!) for our D’s winning essay in a contest by a local historical society.

Very bad weather hit just as the prom was ending, but so far it appears that everyone made it home safely.

I don’t have time to catch up, but want to remind everyone to order a final transcript if your school needs one.

And double check the immunizations.

And hang up that graduation gown to let the wrinkles fall out.

missed so much in here yesterday due to a busy workday and then D2’s 3 hour long track finals–of course the day before the weather was acceptable but not yesterday–wind and sideways rain with temps in the 50’s (which for soaking wet kids in shorts and tshirts feels more like the 30’s!) Nothing like getting your woodstove cruising at full blast and any other heaters and some hot cocoa on MAY 25TH–geesh.

Don’t feel like I’ve seen D1 much lately with the family schedule. Definitely some senioritis going on but she’s trying as far as I can tell. Neither one of us is doing so well with end of school prep or precollege prep. :open_mouth: SO much other real life day to day stuff also going on, hard to prioritize correctly!
Missypie, thanks for those reminders…haven’t done any of them…but at least prom not til June 4th and grad June 10th…

325–congrats on the winning essay and scholarship!

college4three–that’s a good concept to have the prom after graduation. You have a whole 'nother month of school? We’re at about 2 1/2 weeks.

SeattleMom: I guess there are too many helicopter parents here–our after grad party requires everyone to have ticket in advance, put everything–especially cell phone in a bag and leave it in check room, security parents at every exit and fire alarm  and it goes on. So hopefully it is pretty safe. I’m sure someone very resourceful could get stuff by them, but they do have a plan at least!

MomJr–Thanks for the info about the NROTC presentation. I’ll let you know how ours goes!

MissyPie–Thanks for the reminders I better find out from DS (who won’t know) how he’s supposed to request final transcripts.

Seems like graduation will never get here. Still more than three weeks away.

For those of you with sons or daughters in the HS class of 2014, we announced on that thread today that the SS Indecision 2014 will sail in 1,039 days. :D

For everyone else, just smile and be glad do don’t have to sail again (unless its a different year )

Congrats to all on the continuing graduations and awards programs. :)

Grad night hereabouts generally means spending the night at Disneyland. When I was a high school senior, Grad Night came with lots of rules. Boys had to wear a coat and tie. Girls had to wear a dress, or a dressy pantsuit. Each school provided chaperones, and Disneyland kept down attendance, the better to handle the group. I remember essentially no lines, a photo with my date and Winnie the Pooh, and a fairly sedate group of teens (well, except for people hopping out of the cars on that long-gone but sorely-missed ride where you “shrink” down to the size of atoms). Now it’s more crowded, there’s no dress code, and I don’t think they give you a complimentary picture any more.

missypie, thanks for the reminder about transcripts.

The senior trips some of y’all are describing are a tad hair-raising as school-sponsored ventures. D1’s school spends 5 days at a National Park, going hiking. It was raining and snowing and cold, they were out of cell phone range, and they had a great time. No one got lost, no broken bones, no one got eaten by a bear. Success! :)
