Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Waving to you 2edu. Was S1 at the game last night? We couldn’t watch since we don’t have ESPN3 so we listened online via streaming radio and followed via twitter. Bluejr sent us a picture of the stadium from his seat via text. What a great season opener!! If the new recruits continue to deliver the program is def looking up!!

We drove to Columbus yesterday for D’s('14) tennis match and got caught in the OSU game traffic. It was mid 90’s there as well with high humidity. Unfortunately D left her asthma inhaler in her backpack and didn’t put it in her tennis bag. Sure enough the heat and humidity triggered a mild attack which settled down but then let to a second attack that forced her to retire from her match. One of the opposing team player’s dads was on off duty EMT and he offered to walk her and AvonMom next door to the firehouse for a breathing treatment and check while I went with all of our gear and got the car. While we were sitting in their EMS rig observing her treatment we could hear the radio traffic from Columbus as we were in the suburb immediately to the west of the stadium and campus. The heat related calls from the OSU stadium were coming in as fast as they could dispatch them. I can imaginge that there were quite a few of those at Mizzou as well.

Turns out that DD was fine after her treatment and has learned a valuable lesson about keeping an inhaler in her equipment bag at all times. We have to tip our hats and say a big thank you to the EMT crew in Upper Arlington for their professionalism and level of care.

We actually heard from DS last night (kind of). Around 7:30 PM I get a text with photo that he had just taken from the upper level seats at Nationals Stadium in DC. It turns out that their Hall RA’s and the Dorm Mgr. had arranged a block of $5 tickets for the Nationals and Mets game and of course DS was first in line as baseball is his game and passion. We were able to exchange a couple of additional texts with a promise that he will call today or Monday. At least we know he is having a good time socially! :D

D’11 was very into food also, so I have not gone to: Whole Foods; Stew Leonard’s; Fairway since she’s been gone. And I made baked ziti (enough for several days). D would have turned her nose up at it on Day 2 “we had that last night!” whereas H and S say “is there any baked ziti left?” Makes my weekdays so much easier.

She hadn’t done laundry for 2 weeks, then I guess desperation took hold. She said that “it’s much easier here because their machines work”. I guess our dryer that takes 1 hr+ to dry a few t-shirts isn’t the norm…

I checked XC results – she didn’t run in the first 2 races. I think between strep/102 fever and the constant anemia, she’s laying low. That’s the good thing about Div III – she’s not going to get her admission rescinded if she doesn’t perform. I don’t even know if they do that in Div I.

Surprised by another phone call this morning from boychild but he only wanted to let us know the sip car thing would be mailed here and to bring it up parents weekend. Said the first day of orientation was boring (what else is new) but he was meeting up with the sailing team this morning and sounded excited about that.

Kinder, I remember you said your D’s room was on the forth floor. Is it possible that with the boiler/furnace in the basement of her dorm it takes a very, very long time to get hot water up there. Even in my wee home in one of my bathrooms it takes forever and I’m on one floor.

All larger buildings, (hotels, apartments, dorms, office buildings, hospitals, etc.) should have a recirculating domestic hot water pump system that keeps hot water moving in the piping loops that are in the building. This keeps hot water evenly distributed throughout the building so that you don’t have to wait 5 or 10 minutes if you are “at the end of the line”. I would suggest that kinder’s D contact the Housing or Facilities office to have this checked out.

I love these adjustment stories especially the laundry ones. I know DS did laundry because he called to ask us to put money on his school One Card so he could use it. The One Card only accepts Visa and MasterCard and he has an Amex card.

Tyler Perry’s play was great last night. Unfortunately the Madea character was not in it; however, the man himself, Mr. Tyler Perry came out and spoke to the audience at the end. The place went wild. I cried, I was so excited. it was a dream come true.

Thanks for the advice re the hot water. D is definitely going to bring it up (again) but her college’s version of an RA has pretty much been MIA and the facilities folks have never responded to multiple calls. The housing office will be open on Monday/Tuesday as that is when upper classes arrive. The girls on the floor are trying to get the overflowing toilet dealt with first! Then hot water.

We had our first official oovoo call with Bluejr today (like skype). I MUCH prefer this to celphone calls with him. I was able to hear him for one (AT&T has lousy connections), could see his beautiful face, we could both benefit from body language and facial expression (which is HUGE in our family!!). It was wonderful!! Even Bluedog hopped on the sofa to look at him! He just lit up and talked to her. He didn’t seem uncomfortable with his roommate in the background (which made me feel good). I was able to tease him about not eating the brownies I’d sent (I’d tried via text and he missed the humor and got irritated). It made me feel so good to finally communicate without frustration! We offered to bring him home on an upcoming weekend (open invitation, just let us know) and he said he really missed us so he might take us up on it. I felt good just leaving it up to him.

I know it sounds silly, but I do feel a step closer to the new normal I’ve been seeking. I may be pulling up the back of the pack on this, but as long as there is ‘positive forward motion’ I guess I’m doing okay. :)

Have an awesome Sunday everyone!!

^ Blue, we might need to do that here–the Skype thing.

Just got our requisite phone call.
Kiddo sounded tired, distracted and more or less not very informational…
We asked all the questions and got short answers…

The team pratices are tough, team is awesome and “couldn’t ask for a better team” etc…
Seems happy with classes so far
Lots of social time
Getting enough to eat and getting enough sleep…

Thought some of the required orientation stuff was “boring”…one program was about
s3x, communication and consent…kiddo summed it up “don’t r@pe people”…
…and the other required program was about diversity (geeks, athletes, lgbt, race, religion) and kiddo summed it up, “there are gay people on campus”

The books arrived yet evidently kiddo did not go get them–and guess who has P sets for two classes plus a compostion to write for foreign language…
mmmm
live and learn…

I know the books arrived and were signed for by someone in that office by 10:40am…Friday as I see it on Amazon…I .don’t know why kiddo didn’t get the email that the package arrived. Hopefully will ask the office…so it doesn’t happen again…at any rate, I kow kiddo was on FB Fri so why not check the status of the shipment???
sigh

BI - plz don’t ever feel silly with us. That’s why we’re here…because we all understand each other. We each have our own timetables, but I know I feel most comfortable talking to all of you about this process. I’m so jealous of your face to face call. My goal is to have one of those.

Houston we have successful Launch! Got DS planted at school quickly then he was off on the pre-frosh trip. It was a bit of a whirlwind.

Night before we left (after all the hotel drama) DS was getting a bit choked up and gave me a big hug before he went off to bed. It hit him hard that he was leaving. He woke up the next morning ready to pack the car and head out.

We were able to get DS settled, although the roommate situation is still in flux. Three of the 4 were going on the trip. 4th was already in room for sports. Everyone grabbed a bed to store stuff, but I think decisions will still need to be made when they get back.

DS2 got teary after DS1 headed off for his trip check-in. We had a very brief good-bye and I think he would have liked to spend a bit more time saying goodbye. Him being teary got me a bit teary too, but luckily all this was after sending DS1 off with happy hugs and happy thoughts.

DS1 is headed on a backpacking trip. We got a quick email where he said all the other kids on the trip were “noobs”. DS is an Eagle Scout and has lots of camping and backpacking experience. Evidently no one else on the trip has been backpacking. It will make for an easy trip for him and he will probably make lots of friends by helping them out with his experience. I’m sure he’s in for a wonderful week!

So now we are home and getting focused on the new normal as you’ve called it. DS2 starts HS on Tuesday so we need to get him ready for his HS launch!

One thing I have to re-learn with each college student is that all phone calls are not created equal. It’s so frustrating when you finally hear from your kid and then they can’t really talk because of time constraints, don’t feel like talking, or are distracted and not into talking. It makes those half hour rambling conversations much sweeter.

Before I post this on the good buy of the day site, I thought I would share here. I mentioned that my son caught a cold and how his bookstore didn’t sell full size tissue packs. It occurred to me today to look at drugstore.com . Lo and behold not only did they have reasonably priced tissues but they also had the contact solution that we had failed to pack and I didn’t want to ship. AND free shipping! I guess I shouldn’t hope that the tissues get there before his cold is done…but I hope he appreciates my long distance shopping ability!

Congrats, VaMom! No one on the trip had ever been backpacking before? Gosh.

I only stayed about 2hrs when I dropped off boychild. Regular move in day for kids not on the trips was yesterday and they had parent stuff, a lobster bake, etc., Not unhappy I missed it, though.

Thanks for the drugstore site, Kathie.

Okay D has called 4 times today. I am thinking we are not going to lose touch any time soon.
To her credit, she is not homesick but bored as she is in her room taking care of her ankle and can only read/watch DVDs so many hours. Her hallmates are all out. She did walk to the off campus farm stand cum gourmet store to get sugar (which she promptly forgot to pick up) and some snacks so she can continue holing up in room and resting her ankle. (Food services is not fully functioning until the other classes arrive so it is kind of sparse.) So as she hiked the corn field to and from the store she called just to chat for company to take advantage of free cell to cell service. Now WE can’t wait for classes to begin. ;)

Kinderny - When do classes start? I’m with your dd - I would rather walk thru a cornfield and check out the local gourmet store than deal with activites with other newbies.

Grapes and more grapes, better get back to the stove.

^^^She thought classes started on Tuesday, but then found out that she only has a meeting with her adviser on Tuesday am and convocation at 4:30. No “real” classes until Wed. So basically she is on campus for 6 days before classes start. Yikes! Waaayyy too much bonding time for my kid.

She is being proactive though. Going to the registrar tomorrow (supposedly office is open) to find out if her community college credits from a children’s literature/literacy dev. class will meet a requirement. She is pretty uncertain about a 300 level course on language dev. that they put her in for some reason and thinks the credit may substitute.

Just getting the thread back to page 1 where it belongs. Found it this evening well down on page 2.

Talked to D yesterday. She is (wisely) going to events she would have never attended in HS…meeting lots of people, having a great time. Only one problem to which she will confess - took the El to the Loop campus to pick up her books, got off one stop too late. Used the GPS on her cell phone to find her way (about 15 minute walk she said.) I admire her resourcefulness but told her next time just get back on the train. If she was just one stop away, I’m sure she was safe, but wandering around the city alone after getting off the train at the wrong stop isn’t always the best idea!

One of those things you are glad you found out after she was home safe. Thanks for sharing. I am going to copy your post and send to my DS.

Morning All

Looking at the U’s calendar for freshman, it seems classes are in session today thugh most offices are closed. I am praying that kiddo can get the book shipment from the master’s offices today. sigh
I know this is not my problem … and not my problem to fix … kiddo is going to have to figure out what to do about this and needing books right now.

What I don’t get is…If it is “shopping period” and the kids can visit classes etc and all that for two weeks…then how crucial are the P sets from the first week if kids are coming/going into classes…Or does that “shopping” get settled much faster than the time allowed since they are falling behind within the first 2 class meetings…kwim?

Got a FB message late last night–kiddo apologized for not being talkative etc on call–saying tired and mind on all the school work to be done (also probably trying to figure out what to do without own books…)

Missy, I hear ya on the inner city thing and the “glad she was resourceful” and at the same time, nervous about where she was walking. I would guess it depends on the where and when…
Just walking to find it/get there would be what my student would do…
I know the first night we were in New Haven, kiddo was walking around off campus looking for the teams house and there was a party…it’s near a soup kitchen and where an indigent population frequents. I don’t kow if kiddo realizes how the landscape changes so quickly right there.
DH and I were walking down the street early evening with kiddo2 --heading back to the hotel–and there were alot of sketchy things going on.

I guess the thread had slowed considerably since many are moved in, its Labor Day weekend etc
