Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Hello All

Oh Pepper, that was sweet!!

House cleaned. grocery shopping–mostly finished for the time being.
Wrapping mostly finished.

Kiddo has been tired–slept in til after 11 yesterday which is very unusual. Then was by the hs today to say hello. AP chem teacher asked kiddo to come back to harass the AP class…which kiddo did…
Helped me with the Costco run and now headed back to the hs to visit the former coach.

First grade came in yesterday for physics lab. A nice grade…dont know how long the others will take.
Kiddo1 has already mapped out the schedule for spring though shopping period for classes gives time to meet with advisors and make final decisions. So no rush.

As for book sales–IDK what strategy kiddo will use. I have made some suggestions–we will see. In years past, I have sold the books via Amazon or other sites…yet those were here. I suppose kiddo1 could ship them to a buyback with Amazon and just take them to the post office on campus to send them out.

Kiddo2 got that pre-psat score back today–I got a text from koddo2 with a very unhappy face. The score was very low…compared to CC standards…even with the extra time for the LD…I will be interested to see what sections were a challenge… Sigh.
A kick in the gut for kiddo2 given how hard has been working–
Has an A in algebra2… and is now working with a writing tutor since kiddo2 has real writers block issues…
This is tough since some of this is from the LD, and some is perhaps maturity…
The college search for kiddo2 will be very different from kiddo1’s.

Some of the parents here have kids who are dual diagnosed and have LDs…can you PM me as I have questions about how to go about guiding kids like mine through the process.

AvonhsDad, Wife and Family- you are in our hearts and prayers.

I haven’t done one thing to get ready for boychild’s homecoming. I suppose tomorrow I can, at the very least, dust his room.

He’s getting a check for Hanukkah. It’s what he wants, so.

Meanwhile, I am knackered. We went to dinner at a friends last night to see a slide show of their trip to Lima, Machu Picchu, Quito, the rain forest and a cruise around the Galapagos. She culled from 1200 pics down to 300 but the hubby had a long story for at least half of them! We didn’t eat until 10 and by that time I had had a Bloody Mary and three glasses of wine. Add a glass of dessert wine after dinner and having to be up early this morning to play tennis, then lunch with the girls and the last thing I feel like doing is cleaning and marketing for the kid’s arrival. I’ve already changed into my fleece “lounge wear” and have plopped myself down on the couch.

I think I may need to start a thread just for slackermoms like me. ;)

^ That sounds like a loooong evening. ;)

It’s great to hear about the happy homecomings and improved sibling relationships. D1 comes home on Sunday and D2 comes home Wednesday night. I confess that they still get a present on each of the 8 nights of Hanukkah. Last year, Hanukkah was early, so I sent D1 a package with 8 wrapped gifts.

Like Emmybet, we planned a family vacation for this break. It is probably the only time that both girls will have a month off in the winter.

Emmybet: Good luck to D1 with her job search. She seems to find interesting opportunities.

I’m really hoping to see improved sibling relations here, but not optimistic. DS2 is already bemoaning DS1’s impending arrival in a few hours…

I picked up D1 at school on Wednesday. I think she was home for less than 24 hours. She is going with her bf’s family to Vermont to spend the weekend with his sister and her family, and she will be back on Sunday. It was nice for the few hours she was home!

Picked up D at the airport Wednesday. She was wearing shorts. Got a little too used to balmy Atlanta weather!

She immediately sat down in the kitchen, opened her laptop, and set up a video chat with her best friend who was still at Emory. D twisted the screen so I could see her. I said hi through the screen. “I hope to meet you someday…” but did I already cyber-meet her? “Would you like some apple?” I thought it was only polite to offer (she’s a guest in our home).

^ Classof2015…

Our kiddo has been online texting/chatting with friends at college and has been on FB regularly since coming through the door…I guess we can take that as a good sign
that they have found their people :D

Coffee and Tea are ready, grab a cup! I’m with Emilybee–I’d be available for your slackers thread! I’m really good at putting off stuff. For instance, I should be packing boxes to mail to Dad and FIL, but I’m sitting here on the computer!

I popped into the HS 2012 thread and believe me, it’s much nicer to be sitting here waiting for DS to come home for the break than over there waiting on Early decisions. My DS didn’t do any ED/EA but by this time had a couple of rolling admissions. A friend’s DD just got deferred by my DS’s school and I was really rooting for her. Now she has to wait for April.ll

I really should go do some chores! I know I won’t want to do anything but visit after picking up DS1 this evening! I’ve got a smile on my face just thinking about it!

Arisamp, After doing the college thing for the past 3 out of 4 years, I am glad to have a break for a few years before D4 HS freshman has to do it!

Highhead- D3 successfully completed that Calc exam. Because she took 5 classes first semester she took it Pass, D, Fail and must have smoked the final because she went into the exam with a low C- and ended up with a B in the class, will show up as pass and that is all she wanted. She did say that when she went to a review session and mentioned that her teacher had not taught 2 chapters and sent them an e-mail to teach themselves that the person running the review session said “oh you must be in so and so’s class” Her teacher for the class was so bad that everyone but 3 students dropped out. There was an article in YDN that talked about the issues with the math department…just glad D survived it!

She arrived home yesterday afternoon via train and we all went to D4s band concert, was a fun evening and fun to see all 4 kids together and the older 3 rooting on little sis. The mom of D4’s friend, said her daughter (after seeing my kids together) asked her why she hadn’t had more kids and that she was a bit jealous of D4 and all her siblings!

Planning on decorating today, waiting for the propane guy to finish hooking up our gas fireplace. Kids were a bit disappointed that I hadn’t already decorated the house but I told them I didn’t want them to miss out on all the fun…(insert evil laugh here) We also have a bake-a-thon planned, just need to drag their buts out of bed!

It is wonderful to have them home, Wishing you all a safe and happy homecoming!

My DS is home as well, and the grades are beginning to trickle in. Looks like it will be mostly A-'s with a B+ in calculus, which he’s very pleased with. He was relieved when that B+ came in because he needed at least a B- average between this term’s and next term’s calculus to be allowed to declare a CS major and he wasn’t clear how the curve would work out. That was a new experience for him – as he said he’d never before had to worry about a math grade not being good enough for anything!

Don’t have time to read the posts above-- got a class in an hour and i’m woefully behind in xmas decorating, cleaning, shopping. bit off more than i can chew this fall. but, i wanted to post this: last night the S of good friend was deferred from his SCEA choice, Princeton. this kid had 2400 SATs on his first sitting in Oct of his junior year, will probably graduate 1st in his class from a leading public hs, has wonderful ECs, wrote a stunning application, and is one of the nicest kids you’ll ever meet. So who exactly are they looking for? I honestly just don’'t get it. I know this is a crapshoot, but when a kid has done everything right…is a stellar candidate, and truly loves the school, why turn him away, at least for now (i’m still hoping he gets in come march)? did i ever mention how much i can’t stand this process?

So true fogfog! I can tell she isn’t crazy about being back home, which is exactly how it should be.

My S (HS Class of 2014) has LD – what is dual diagnosed? “Boy” and “LD”? (sorry) His college journey will be different from D’s but may be more targeted and fruitful in the end.

Va, the more the merrier! I’m still in my jams and obviously on the computer instead of doing something productive. Boychild gets out of his last final shortly and I’m debating whether to call him to just say congrats on finishing.

Having lunch with a friend to run by a business idea I have and I guess I should stop by the market to pick up some cereal so BC will have something to eat.

I dropped by the 2012 thread, too. I have to keep reminding myself that this board is not representative of 99.9% of the kids out there applying to colleges.

I’m enjoying reading all the happy homecoming stories. D came back last night and seemed thrilled to be done with exams. She said was looking forward to this visit but is starting to consider her college room ‘home’. That works for me! She also spent much of the evening communicating electronically with friends, both college friends and old friends from high school, many of whom were in the throes of ED decisions coming down yesterday. SO glad not to be there this year! I may recover before S applies in 2013.

Now we can get on with decorating, baking (I have started, but put off the ‘favorites’ so D can help), wrapping, etc. S has an exam today and last one on Monday, but his hardest ones are done so we can mostly relax this weekend.

S is getting ready for his last exam & then rushing to pack & get to the airport. I will be on pins (not needles too) making sure he makes flight & connections.
I thought of some food I can make. I can really only reliably cook 5 things. So I think I will make chicken soup tonite. I am going to bake cookies tomorrow but I dont think S will be helping.
I saw on Twitter today that anonymous people have been going down to Kmart & Walmart & paying off people’s holiday layaways. I have to look into this, it sounds like a wonderful idea, but you would hope that it would get to the people who are desperately trying to give their kids some type of holiday this year & not some one who say has 5 xbox games on hold. Hard to do without violating people’s privacy.

Idinct, I read about that yesterday and had the feeling it was being done for people who really need it. Wonderful idea and I may pop into Walmart (we don’t have any Kmarts here) and pay off someone’s layaway.

Boychild just called. He is all done. Sounded exhausted but thinks he has done fairly well on all his exams, but has no idea how the paper for his FWS will be received. Driving home tomorrow and should be here late afternoon-ish.

I read this morning on another thread how his school offers free massages and puppies to pet to relieve stress during finals week. He didn’t sign up for a massage but did spend some time playing with a labbie puppy (no sign-up required for that.)

Puppies and massages, wow! I definitely went to the wrong college!

^^^ Me too.

I hear that K-Mart was the more common store because they let people lay away all year long. And people are paying on the accounts that are in danger of being forfeit because the people cannot pay the amount due.
In the article I read, a woman had started it because she had lost her husband, Ben, and was doing it in tribute. Well, God bless Ben!

I have heard the term “dual exceptions”, not dual diagnosed. If it is the same, it means diagnosed with a learning disorder but also having high intellegince- both making the individual an exception from the norm.

D came home last night and slept for 15 hours. She was “done tuckered”.

Ds made the bus!!! His last exam ended at 3:50 and the bus was leaving at 4 so it was a relief to get his text - with that added bonus - he thinks he did well on today’s two exams (chem and physics) which counters his anxiety over how much of a curve will happen on the calc exam which he thought was brutal.
