Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Hurray for Arisamp’s S. That shows real character. And sympathies for yalemom’s S. Poor kid.

Fantastic, arisamp - what a tribute to your son and to the coach who is sharing it with you!

These tales of sick kids are worrisome…not sure I could stay home if my kiddo were as sick as some of yours although I know I will have to. Hope he would call and tell me at least!

arisamp, sounds like your son made an impression on his coach and teammates and knows how to keep his cool under pressure, you have every right to feel proud of him!

my daughter had just about everything that could go physically wrong go wrong in about a 2 year period, except for cancer. Mono was right in the middle of it, just a couple of months after she had pneumonia. They diagnosed her with a blood test after the throat swab came back negative. The doctor didn’t think she had mono, even before the throat swab came back negative. But enough other things had gone wrong with her, including a mis diagnoses a year before the mono that could have killed her, that when I just looked at him and said I don’t care what it is or isn’t just figure it out he decided to do the blood test for mono and it came back positive.

gsmomma- good luck to your D on the RA job.

yalemom- wonder if the rash could be due to laundry detergent he is using? Or, perhap he is overloading the washer and clothes are not rinsing well?

aris- sounds like you have winner. Your S sounds very mature and well grounded!

kathie- give me another month and I will be looking forward to spring. Weather has been so mild this year I have no complaints.

Arisamp - high five to your son. You must be sooooo proud. And for his coach to email you…amazing.

Hope all the sick kids get better quickly. Back in the day, I had mono then pneumonia second semester freshman year resulting in two dropped classes. Fortunately I was able to stay in the school infirmary so as not to infect others.

ugh, hope all the sick kids are feeling better soon!

Arisamp: Kudos to your son! How nice that the coach was willing to share that with you!

Hoping all the sick kiddos feel better soon!

Rescuing from page 2. Congrats on the sportsmanship and best of luck on the RA apps and get well to everyone under the weather. Also, belated kudos to kinder’s D for her help to the student having the medical/mental problems.

Well, it has started for DD '14. The college emails and snail mail flyers have started to arrive. Its only 793 days until final acceptance decision mailing day in March 2014! Looks like there will be a lot of recycling in our house over the next two years! :D

DS’s 19th birthday is today. Already sent a text but got no response which isn’t a good sign that he is studying. Most likely out with his Ultimate teammates after practice for some celebratory refreshments! At least one of the boxes we sent has arrived at his dorm based on the email notice I received.

Have a good Firday everyone!

Congrats arisamp – really wonderful to hear that story – you’ve got a good kid!

yalemom – when D had strep, I asked about mono (just because so many college kids get it). Is the rash itchy (then I’m going with laundry detergent theory)?

AvonHSdad – happy birthday to DS! Whenever D doesn’t respond to texts, I check her debit card activity online. It’s a sure way to know she’s still breathing. And spending money.

Hi all - I do hope kids get better soon. arisamp’s story would warm any parent’s heart (and yes, thank you to the coach - we have so few opportunities to hear these things about our kids).

Here’s another way to find out your kid is doing OK - mine added about 6 new FB friends this week. The juniors who were abroad last semester are back, which I think has given her great fodder for new friends. Plus, she went to a play the SECOND day she was back to school, and plans to get rush tickets to another one this weekend. Yes, college theatre kids have a whole different concept of the word “rush”!

D1 is way too busy and having way too much fun to talk to us, plus they don’t have internet at her new house yet. Sigh. She is doing all the right things, but it’s a little poignant for us. She’s gone to college, traveled to the other side of the globe … but now she’s truly not our little girl any more.

Arisamp, well done to your DS!

Happy 19th to Avonson!

Kudo’s to both Arisamp and Kinder’s daughter - Two kids who did the right thing, when there was no one watching!

Rain - cold yucky rain here. Makes me want to make some soup to simmer on the stove and sit in the corner of the sofa and read the day away…

Happy 19th to your Son Avon Dad.

Emmy - I browse S’s FB page occasionally and it makes me happy to see him add new “friends” he met at school. I know they may not be “friends” as I think of friends, but at least he is meeting new people.

S will text and call H & I several times a week. usually as he walks between classes. He skypes with lil sis. He says he has made some changes in his studying habits and is putting some more effort into academics. Of course, that is what he is telling us, and he has a history of telling us things are going great even when they aren’t, so time will tell. But, I think/hope. pray he will pull it together this semester. He school sent out an email about internships and mentoring with alumae with the suggestion that we encourage our freshman to sign up. S feels it is waste of time to apply for an internship as a freshman and isn’t much intersted in the mentoring. He still doesn’t get the networking, contact thing at all, but we will keep pushing. His school had a basketball game nearby. I planned on going, but when I went to buy tickets last night, I found out it was last week. :(. oy. oh well, I thought the game was in Feb., not Jan.

mamom - what does your DS plan to major in? What/Who has the most influence over his actions - peers, parents, little sister, cousins, profs, adviser, articles from independent sources?

HB to AvonDad DS

I think many of you will relate to this article. [Susan Cain: Don’t Call Introverted Children ‘Shy’ | TIME Ideas | TIME.com](<a href=“Susan Cain: Don't Call Introverted Children 'Shy' | TIME.com”>Susan Cain: Don't Call Introverted Children 'Shy' | TIME.com)

Hooray for Arisamp son! Happy 19th to Avonson!

Celebrating today because semester 1 is finally over for HS15 son. Isn’t it amazing how one terrible, horrible, MEAN teacher can ruin the day every day for a kid? Good riddance! Let’s hope the kid eventually remembers that he actually likes science!

D and the little bro are playing Words with Friends together on their phones. It warms my heart that they are virtually spending time together. D is really killing him, but he is happily participating anyway.

Happy weekend!

I heard Susan Cain being interviewed on local NPR program yesterday. Putting her book on my must read list.

I am familiar with E. Aron work on HSP but not Susan Cain. Thanks for posting.

Happy Birthday to Avondad’s S and Congrats to all our unsung heroes out there :)

Great article, thanks for posting!! S1 is getting a Bachelors and Masters in chemical engineering in 4 years, has a small group of really close friends and is still as stimulation averse as ever, but life is working out just fine for my little introvert :)

Thanks for the suggestions of laundry detergent as S2’s rash culprit. The location of the rash (torso and lymph node areas around armpits and knees) made me think it was a systemic problem (something he ate? or the aforementioned strep? -which was ruled out). Jury’s still out, but zyrtech is definitely making it better. No word back from the clinic on the mono test result- thinking it’s probably neg or he would have heard.

^^sounds a lot like poison ivy??

I am too much of a lurker to be an awesome parent. I have a question, though, for all of you: what are your kids planning to do for the summer? My son, a freshman at Tufts, is a little at loose ends – he would like to do something other than work at the summer camp he’s been working at for the past 3 years, but most places with cool internships want older students. Anyone’s son or daughter planning something fun and/or lucrative?
