Porkchop - DS is an engineering major and is planning on getting an internship this summer. Altho many positions prefer upperclassmen, there are plenty that are available for any level. Fortunately he will have some project and team experience on his resume from his classwork. What is your son’s major? Is making money or getting experience in his field a priority?

@ porkchop - ‘Readers/followers’ are awesome too!!

My son is an e’school student and has applied for some internships but is finding they are looking for older students (as expected). He’ll keep chugging but follow up with the company he interned with locally the last two summers if he doesn’t find anything else by spring break. As long as he finds something to do full time we are happy campers. He’s responsible for spending money and books so sitting home isn’t an option.

Good question. He’s thinking of majoring in Econ. Seems too early to get any meaningful internship at a bank. He’d like to make $ and get some other kind of experience. He loves sports, and he likes art. I told him to go to the career center and see what they say.

porkchop - Is he willing to go where the job is or does he need to be in a certain location?

My DS (CS major) is hoping to get a paid internship for the summer as well. I am certainly hoping that the “plenty available for any level” bit is true. He does have project team experience, and he is on an accelerated track in his CS classes. (He has taken one, tested out of one, and this spring will finish two more of the 7 basic CS core classes required for the major.) So hopefully he has a good chance of finding something. He is willing to live anywhere, but needs to cover his living expenses and net enough to pay his school’s summer earnings expectation toward his tuition next year. He’s also responsible for spending money and books, but has a little money in the bank and an on-campus job this semester (which he can probably keep going forward) so I think he’ll be ok on that front, especially since he isn’t a spender.

mathmomvt - DS spent several days over Winter Break looking for internships. He will run out time and energy before he will run out of opportunities. Google internships computer science. At www. Indeed. com there are over 3,000 possibilities. That being said, I have NO idea if any will translate into a paying position, but hopefully if he applies to enough of them, he will get something. DS took the same approach with scholarships and was very successful. Fingers and toes crossed for all our kids.

Indeed.com looks promising for all kinds of things. Thanks, awesome parents!

I’ve sent some leads to my IT son, but every one that I looked at wanted students going into their junior or senior year. Have you seen this site? [Dice - Advanced JobSearch](<a href=“Search Jobs | Dice.com”>Search Jobs | Dice.com) He may be able to work at my husbands company helping out their IT guy.

Thanks FLMathMom. His school has a spring technical jobs fair coming up that he has heard is where most engineering/CS types get their summer internships, so he is working up his resume for that. He tried the web search approach for scholarships, but was NOT successful. But I will pass on the “indeed” pointer as well – that looks quite promising.

My company does hire summer interns in CS but they have a policy of not hiring family members of current employees. (I’m not sure they’d have anything for a freshman anyhow – the ones I’ve met have all been further along.)

Thanks for Cain book/article - ordered the book!
yalemom - DS frequently gets “viral” rashes - rashes post a virus as it is leaving his system.

Summer - DS is taking upper level math courses - in part to accelerate and in part so he has more “time” to take other subjects of interest. After this summer - internship/work for sure.

Happy weekend all!

mathmomvt - If your company does not hire family members but does hire freshman, would you mind passing info along to us.

Ahhh, good suggestion FLMathMom, especially for those of us that have kids in VT! :)

Just found an interesting internship site for CS kids - [Computer Science Internships?Computer Technology Development Intern Opportunities?Internships.com](http://www.internships.com/intern/it/computer-science)

A local company for me, Lutron, hires quite a few engineering interns and co-op students all year round.

Thanks Kath. Just emailed info to my angel. He promised me he would do a few apps every weekend. He did surprise us by calling today. Did not expect to hear from him til at least Sunday. Said first week of school was good. Professor wants him to take math placement exam to place out of Vector Calculus and Linear Algebra. Not sure what class he would take.

Maybe some of our kiddos will end up working together this summer!!

He is a finance major. H probably has the most influence over S but only because he will force the issue if he feels it it important. Outside of H’s heavy hand, his friends have the most influence. He had some great teachers he had bonded with in HS, but really hasn’t kept up with them. At his college, he seems to have bonded with an English teacher he had last semester. S is a very closed kid though and I doubt he would approach her for advice, “it would look stupid.” He is very immature in mine and H’s mind, very worried about what others think type of thing, instead going for the gold.

Mnmom - sorry to read about the dreadful teacher. I sometimes wonder why those types bother staying in the teaching field.

S will probably work at the same company he worked at last summer and during xmas break. He was doing maintanance work but they have asked him what his major is and said something about maybe looking for an internship type job for him. Really wouldn’t be what he wants to eventually do, he wants to work on wall street, but any finance related work would be good. Otherwise, he will work doing maintanance again. Money is good and he can start right when school ends if he wants.

porkchop - my nephew started working as a pt teller at a local bank while a sophomore in college. He is now working in the accounting dept and they have offered him a ft job when he graduates in June.

The company where I work as a rule does not generally hire freshman interns. There are some exceptions, of course, which are usually “executive referrals.” (Great nephew of the president, etc). D1 didn’t even bother to try for a ‘real job’ this summer. She loves working at resident camp, and her pay all goes into the bank, since she has no expenses during the summer. She gets room and board and very little time to spend the money she makes. We did tell her that she should look for a real internship next year.

Today, I ran into the camp director from the camp she applied to work at this summer. She mentioned that she is planning on sending D1 an offer tonight for a summer position.

D did hear about the RA position. She was offered to be an alternate RA. She said that over 65 new kids applied, and about 30 current RAs reapplied for 44 positions. She is not sure how many people were offered alternate positions, but she said she will send in the paperwork and hope that she will be offered a full time position. She was told that some people do not accept the offer right away, and others pull out right before staff training in the fall. She said that the email told her that she was qualified, but there were not enough positions. Sort of like the college wait list!

She still has the option to live in the sorority house.

gsmomma – sorry about the “wait list” on the RA position. How does that complicate her housing options for next year – when does she have to commit to somewhere else by and how much of a problem is it to withdraw at the last minute if an RA position comes through last minute if someone else drops out right before staff training! Sounds stressful :(

ShawD will take chemistry this summer, but might also teach yoga at a camp (at the ashram where she got her teacher’s certification) or alternatively see if she start working in some capacity at a hospital.

ShawSon is a junior. He worked for my company last summer. He’s now applying for jobs for the first time. So far, two consulting firms, one institutional money manager, one hedge fund. The hedge fund responded immediately to set up a phone interview. He’s got more applications to put in, but he’s a little late in the game for the folks who interview at his college. I will also introduce him to some people.

ShawDad - sounds like you have great connections for ShawSon. That is wonderful.

GSMom - hope the waitlist works in DD favor. Sounds like her summer is set. Sweet.

GSmomma- Does your D have to commit to the sorority housing soon? Good luck with wait list.

Just ordered some valentines cookies, $9.99 delivered from cheryls. I have sent some previously to S and he said they were “really good.”

Good morning! Coffee, tea and muffins are out–enjoy!

I hope the sick students are recovering. Congrats to Ariasamp and HB to Avondad’s DS.
GSmomma–I hope everything works out for your DD–I’m sure she will find the right place to live next year. I think it was great that they chose her as an alternate with 30 coming back from previous years. That’s some tough competition!

DS is home! He was supposed to arrive around 11am. He showed up at 8am. He was checking his train schedule before going to bed last night and realized there was a missing connection time-wise. So he decided to travel in the middle of the night and catch an early morning train. Surprise! So he’s currently wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket sleeping on the couch! :)

He’s home for a week for intersession. He did well his first semester and will probably end up with a 3.5–still waiting on one grade, but is confident it is an A. He’s very happy to have gotten (hopefully) two A’s at a school that constantly reminds everyone about their grade deflation (not the words they use). They even sent us parents a pamphlet about it to “warn” us that their freshman grades would be less than what they are used to. He worked really hard for his grades, and did well!

I managed to break our car! We bought a low-mileage 2000 chrysler for the boys to drive. I like to drive it too! I was bringing the trash can back up the driveway and hit the side-view mirror with the can and it snapped off. I think it was more about 12 year old plastic than force involved. Anyway, car is out of commission until DH can order a new mirror.
Luckily we have other cars available, but timing is bad with DS being home and potentially wanting a car to drive!

Enjoy your weekend~
